It tends to go rancid in a very short period of time, regardless of where you purchase it. I’ve made my own face cream for 25+ years. “Refined” shea butter is one ingredient. It’s nearly odorless and very stable.

Apparently, soy wax can be substituted in place of beeswax. I just googled this, so I can’t speak to how it will change the recipe :)

You can compare another recipe I have for a whipped body butter. You’re correct, though- basically, you just need to reduce the amount of beeswax compared to the shea butter/cocoa butter that you’re using as the base. https://foodfunfamily.com/chocolate-body-butter/

I wouldn’t use coconut oil or cocoa butter for your face. They both have high comedogenic ratings. Shea and mango are better for your face :)

I use both cocoa butter and shea butter. No big preference on my part. I like them both and think that they can be used pretty interchangeably.
