]]>My kids and I were invited to attend a screening of Despicable Me 3 earlier this week, a few days before it came out in theaters. We were so excited to see the film because we have loved everything about the Despicable Me franchise since the first movie came to theaters years ago. Although we were given a family dinner-and-movie night, all thoughts and opinions are our own.
How fun does our Despicable Me dinner and a movie fun night look??

DESPICABLE ME 3 – In Theaters NOW!
Official Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | GruTube | #DespicableMe3
Illumination, who brought moviegoers Despicable Me and the biggest animated hits of 2013 and 2015, Despicable Me 2 and Minions, continues the story of Gru, Lucy, their adorable daughters—Margo, Edith and Agnes—and the Minions in Despicable Me 3.
After he is fired from the Anti-Villain League for failing to take down the latest bad guy to threaten humanity, Gru finds himself in the midst of a major identity crisis. But when a mysterious stranger shows up to inform Gru that he has a long-lost twin brother—a brother who desperately wishes to follow in his twin’s despicable footsteps—one former super-villain will rediscover just how good it feels to be bad.
Rated PG
Running time: 1 hour 30 minutes
I don’t remember the last time I heard ALL of my kids laughing so much. It was hilarious to have my 16-year-old sitting in the seat next to a preschool-aged kids in the theater…and they were each laughing equally as often and equally as loud! This movie is FULL of non-stop laughs, although like the other movies that preceded this newest one, there are plenty of tender, thoughtful and sweet moments.
I loved seeing Gru and Lucy and the girls falling into their new-since-the-last-movie roles as a family – mom + dad + kids. The new movie takes place sometime within the first year or so after the last movie ended. The girls are the same cuties that we know and love, but just a little bit more mature (especially Margo!). Lucy has become a great mom – she obviously cares very much for her new little family.
Gru is trying so hard to let his “good side” shine through. He makes a great dad and husband, but some people think that he doesn’t make a very good “good guy.” So when he meets his long lost twin brother, Dru, who tries to pull Gru’s bas side out, he struggles to stay true to his “family values.”
The new characters – Dru, the twin brother Gru didn’t know he had, and Balthazar Bratt, the new villain who is stuck in the 80s – are a perfect fit for the franchise. Both of the new characters offer dozens of laugh-out-loud moments. And their arrival paints a wonderfully engaging story to watch.
One of my favorite things about this new movie was the soundtrack! Our new villain, Balthazar Bratt, is stuck in the 80s, the era when he was the star of an action show on TV. His presence lends itself to a dozen or so of my favorite tunes from the 1980s. I can’t wait to get the soundtrack!
Despicable Me 3 is family-friendly and perfect for all ages. I love finding shows that are equally entertaining for the parents as they are for the kids!

]]>I was invited to Los Angeles along with 24 other bloggers to cover the Pirates of the Caribbean press event as well as the newest Walt Disney Signature Collection release of Bambi on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD. All travel and accommodations were covered by Disney, but all thoughts and opinions are my own. Amazon affiliate links are used within this post. Movie stills posted courtesy of Disney.
Today marks the Walt Disney Signature Collection release of Bambi, a classic Disney film that is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year! Bambi joins three other classic Disney stories in the Collection – “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and “Pinocchio.”
The Collection release includes all-new bonus material, including recordings of Walt Disney discussing the production of Bambi, deleted scenes, and so much more. I think I may have enjoyed watching all of the bonus material even more than I enjoyed the movie (this is often the case….I LOVE behind the scenes looks!).
You can purchase Bambi: the new Walt Disney Signature Collection Blu-ray/DVD on Amazon or at retailers everywhere now!
Bambi was released in 1942 during World War II. Production took extra long (over five years!) because of its hand-drawn artwork and attention to detail. When I was watching the movie again recently, I was struck by the artistic value of the movie and found myself getting lost in the scenery.
I appreciated this insight from Ted Sears, Story Development, in “Inside Walt’s Story,” an intimate look into the transcripts of the planning sessions that Walt and his team had when working on Bambi. He said, “What bothers some of us is thinking the story we’re writing is Bambi: The Book. I think we should get away from the book. I think that we should look at it as a symphony based on the story of Bambi, or suggested by the story of Bambi. If we try to follow the book, we’re just going to be handicapped all the way through and the story will be too straight.”
I’m grateful that Walt and his team were inspired to do the movie the way that they did, because Bambi is a story to be FELT, rather than just “watched.”

]]>Disneynature’s newest film, Born in China, opened in theaters everywhere this past weekend! My kids and I have loved every Disneynature movie, and we were excited to hear about this latest production. No compensation was received for sharing this information. All activities, photos, and information about the movie has been provided by Disney. Thoughts are my own.
Did you know? Moviegoers who see Disneynature’s new True Life Adventure film “Born in China” during its opening week (April 21-27, 2017) will benefit the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Based on opening-week attendance, Disneynature, via the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund, will make a contribution to the WWF to help protect wild pandas and snow leopards in China.
China’s unique way of looking at nature is central to the story of “Born in China.”
“It is a story of life and death,” says director Lu Chuan. “In China, death is not the end of life. It’s another beginning. Wildlife has many beginnings, and we wanted to explore that in the movie. I want to help audiences around the world better understand this philosophy.”
According to Lu Chuan, directing a movie like “Born in China” initially called for a different approach. “For a feature film, you use your imagination and create everything from a blank page,” he says. “Disneynature films are character-driven stories, but the characters are the animals. So the story comes from the footage and is inspired by the lives these animals lead.”
“We shot so much footage,” said nature filmmaker Phil Chapman. “I’ve never worked on a project that had such an extreme shooting ratio. But as we sat and went through the rushes, watching and cataloging everything, these dramatic and touching stories began to emerge.”
Says Lu Chuan, “The footage was just great. I realized a nature movie is not so different from a feature film. I wanted to make a special movie—not just for audiences, but also for myself. I wanted to show how these animals are metaphors. They give birth, like we do. They do their best to raise their cubs, like we do. They succeed and they fail. And when they fail, consequences can be dire. Their drive to do what is best for their families resonates with all of us.”
Born in China features several different animals and their unique and touching stories. I love how the movie is built around the stories that unfolded naturally as filmmakers watched animals in their native habitat over an extended period of time. This is true “reality TV” at it’s finest!
From the moment “Born in China” was envisioned for the big screen, filmmakers knew pandas would be a central character in the film. “You can’t really do a nature movie set in China without featuring giant pandas,” says producer Phil Chapman.
Revered in China, the panda is endangered—there are only 1,864 living in the wild according to a 2014 census. Filmmakers captured stunning imagery of a mother panda and her cub as they interacted in the Sichuan Wolong National Nature Reserve, which is located in the Sichuan province in central China.
To ensure that the filmmakers would not endanger the animals by habituating them to humans, filmmakers were required to don “panda suits”—black and white garments made to look and smell like pandas—that allowed them to blend in with the subjects they were filming.
Filmmakers ventured to the Zhalong wetlands and Yancheng Coastal wetlands to film the cranes—beautiful birds with snow-white plumage, dramatic black markings and iconic red crowns. The film spotlights the migration of the bird, its ever-changing habitat and the distance it travels as the seasons change.
According to cinematographer Paul Stewart, getting up close to the birds was easier than he expected. “They are very nervous birds,” says Stewart. “When we wanted to get close to film the birds with their chicks, we were very cautious because we didn’t want to disturb a rare species like this. We were delighted that they accepted our presence and allowed us a rare glimpse of their lives with their chicks.”

Join Disneynature on a remarkable journey to see the beauty of China and experience the epic stories of animal families set against a vast canvas.
Filmmakers initially planned to feature the first year of a monkey’s life. After capturing hours of footage of newborn monkeys, searching for the right, compelling story, filmmakers noticed a youngster who had recently welcomed a new baby sister.
“TaoTao’s life is turned upside down when his family turns its collective back on this young monkey—who previously was the center of attention,” says producer Roy Conli. “He no longer understands how he fits into his family or his troop.”
Fewer than 75,000 chiru remain on the planet, due to generations of poaching.
Every spring, thousands of female chiru bid adieu to the males and make an epic journey en route to the legendary Zhouonai Lake in the remote uplands of the Qinghai Plateau. There, they welcome new calves. Mothers and newborns bond and practice essential skills—like walking—before making the long trek home. “They take on what is perhaps the most difficult migration of any animal anywhere to give birth by this lake,” says field director Ben Wallis. “Nobody knows why, exactly, but the tradition is breathtaking to witness.”
China’s Qinghai Plateau, the highest mountain plateau on Earth, is home to the stunning and elusive show leopard. Experts estimate that there as few as 4,000 snow leopards left in Central Asia’s high mountains—though their hard-to-reach habitat and phenomenal ability to disappear make it difficult to gauge.
The film features a snow leopard mother—likely a first-time mom—struggling to take care of her cubs—and herself. “Dawa is an experienced hunter, but still has very little success, especially after being driven into a new territory by rival snow leopards,” says Leith. “One of the biggest myths of the wild world is that life is somehow easier for
predators. It’s not. Life is just as tough, maybe even tougher than it is for the prey.
These printable activity packets are not only entertaining and a great tie in to the movie for kids, but they are educational and encourage kids to dig deeper and learn about the animals and the environment that they see in Born in China. Before I share these new printables, I wanted to share my excitement about the movie, since YOU can finally see it in theaters. Our collective feeling about Moana can be summed up in my youngest son’s comment after the movie ended: “I can’t believe it’s over. That went by SO fast! I didn’t even notice the time because it was so good and I wasn’t ever bored!” That is saying a lot from a boy who has a hard time sitting through a movie!
When I suggested that we see Moana again after Thanksgiving, all of the kids were thrilled. No “Aww! But I’ve already seen that.” Did I mention that my kids are TEENAGERS?
I short, Moana is a movie that EVERYONE in the family will enjoy – old and young. There is a slightly scary lava creature that could intimidate little ones, but I really think that Moana scores well on family-friendliness. Expect to come away from Moana singing the songs (and maybe dancing a little) – you will want the soundtrack (psst – that’s an Amazon link). It’s that good!

Be sure to check out my preview post about our unique Moana viewing experience, and check back on Saturday night to see how seeing Moana in Dolby Cinema at AMC differed from seeing it in the regular theater.

MOANA arrives in theatres everywhere on November 23rd!

]]>I’m excited to share these free printable Moana coloring pages and activity sheets – bookmarks, mazes and a memory match game – all to help you get excited for the movie! Moana comes to theaters everywhere on November 23! Activities courtesy of Disney.

Three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, for a millennium, their voyages stopped – and no one knows exactly why. From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes “Moana,” a sweeping, CG-animated feature film about an adventurous teenager who sails out on a daring mission to save her people. During her journey, Moana (voice of Auli‘i Cravalho) meets the mighty demigod Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson), who guides her in her quest to become a master wayfinder. Together, they sail across the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds, and along the way, Moana fulfills the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers the one thing she’s always sought: her own identity.
Directed by the renowned filmmaking team of Ron Clements and John Musker (“The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin,” “The Princess & the Frog”), produced by Osnat Shurer (“Lifted,” “One Man Band”), and featuring music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foa‘i, “Moana” sails into U.S. theaters on Nov. 23, 2016.
