Spoiler-Free Thoughts on The Film

Apparently, my husband and I have unpopular opinions when it comes to Star Wars movies. Dale was raised on the original Star Wars trilogy movies. He knows those movies backwards and forwards. He has some STRONG opinions about what excellent examples of cinema they are, especially since they were made in an age without the high tech special effects that we have today.

And as huge of a Star Wars fan as he has always been, he has NOT been a fan of the modern additions to the Star Wars saga. I’ll leave it at that.

Daisy Ridley is Rey in STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER

He and I have, however, really enjoyed the side stories, such as Solo: A Star Wars Story and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

In other words, we tend to love the movies that aren’t received as well critically. but I know we’re not alone.

What I’m getting to is that we both agreed that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was the best of the modern Star Wars saga movies. There were many elements in the movie that made it feel more like the original, the action was excellent, the special effects were very well done (I was especially impressed with how they handled Leia in this film!), and over-all I thought it was a great way to end the saga.

Was it a perfect movie? Not by a long shot. Was it entertaining? Heck, yeah.

The thing that I noticed as we were making the hour-long drive back home from the screening theater is that the movie made me THINK. I noticed the symbolism more with this movie than with any of the previous movies, and I felt like you could write thorough college-level papers examining the parallels and lesson to be learned from the script.

Family-friendly?

Parents often ask how child-friendly PG and PG-13 movies are (note: this movie is rated PG-13). As expected from a Sci-Fi action movie like this, there are plenty of duels and fights, possible scary-looking characters, and intense action, but nothing that you wouldn’t expect. If you’ve seen the other Star Wars movies with your kids, then this will fit right in.

It’s not very often that I see a movie in the theater more than one time. But I enjoyed Spider-Man: Far From Home so much that I saw it not once, not twice, but FOUR times in the theater. And amazingly, I was still just as excited to see it again when it came out on DVD, Blu-ray and Ultra HD this week.

And now…my absolute favorite thing about adding movies to my home collection: all the bonus features! Yesterday, I sat down in front of the TV and watched all of the bonus materials. So. Much. Fun.

My favorite bonus feature is always the gag reel and bloopers. I love seeing how the cast interacts with each other and all of the fun they have together when making the film. My kids loved hearing Tom Holland revert to his normal British accent when he came out of character to laugh or tease a fellow actor.

I also enjoyed seeing the clip highlighting the stunts found in Spider-Man: Far From Home. My admiration for Tom Holland grew by leaps and bounds (pun intended). I couldn’t believe the athleticism and skill that he displayed by doing most of his stunts on his own. Wow.

What are your favorite bonus features to watch?

I know you’ve been counting down the days. I’m sure you’re just as excited as I am to say that Toy Story 4 is finally here!! The family and I were thrilled to be able to catch a screening of the newest Toy Story movie a few days before it was released in theaters. Although our tickets were comped, all thoughts about the movie are our own.

How Our Family Reacted to Toy Story 4

I remember when we saw the original Toy Story in theaters. My husband and I were shocked that the story line was so captivating. We were expecting a fun family movie, but what we got was a deeply touching, thoughtful, and totally hilarious film that everyone in the family could appreciate.

It’s rare for a second or a third movie in a franchise to come anywhere close to the first when it’s as good as Toy Story was. Second and third time around, I went to the movie theater expecting to be let down…at least a little. And yet, Woody and Buzz and all of their friends never let me down.

This movie was the same for me. Dare I say even better? Toy Story 4 exceeded my expectations (and at this point my expectations are pretty high when it comes to Toy Story). I laughed, I cried, and I felt like I was back with old friends.

HANGIN’ AROUND – In Disney·Pixar’s “Toy Story 4,” Buzz Lightyear finds himself among a host of carnival prizes—including Ducky and Bunny, who’ve been waiting a long time to be won. My husband’s reaction was the biggest shock for me. While I tend to enjoy a movie for its entertainment value (and don’t get too critical unless it bores, offends or creeps me out), my husband is a “critical” movie critic. He likes to tear movies apart for their flaws.

He found none. He laughed throughout the movie and could not stop singing its praises as we walked out of the theater.

I think all families that have seen the previous Toy Story movies should see Toy Story 4 in theaters. Yes, I do recommend watching the first three movies if you haven’t already. I loved that there was a quick “refresher” sequence at the beginning of Toy Story 4 so everybody knew where the movie was starting.

One word of warning: some young children might be scared by the ventriloquist dummies (they are creepy!) but otherwise there is nothing in the movie that stood out to me as something to keep young kids away from.

GABBY GABBY – In Disney•Pixar’s “Toy Story 4,” Woody finds himself in Second Chance Antiques, home to an adorable, talking pull-string doll from the 1950s and her crew of voiceless ventriloquist dummies. Unfortunately for Gabby Gabby, a manufacturing defect in her pull-string voice box has left her sounding anything but adorable. Captain Marvel is now officially available on DVD/Blu-ray (and digital download, of course!)! I’ve been waiting for this day because my husband missed seeing Captain Marvel in the theaters and I was eager to share it with him. We were finally able to watch it together this weekend after our review copy arrived. You can order yours now on Amazon (affiliate link) or pick it up at your local stores!

I loved Captain Marvel in theaters and I appreciated it even more on DVD. Captain Marvel has a very different feel compared to the other Marvel Universe films, probably because in this film none of the other super heroes exist. And unlike the other (non-Avengers) movies that have come out, there are no other super hero carry-over characters or secondary story lines.

Captain Marvel takes place in the 1990s, a time I am personally very familiar with. It was fun to see some cultural things that I remember from that time of my life. I loved seeing a younger Nick Fury and Agent Coulson.

Now that Captain Marvel is out on Blu-ray/DVD, it’s a great time to catch it for the first time (if you didn’t see it in the theater like my husband) or catch it again. And BONUS: now that the DVD/Blu-ray is out, there are hours of extra content to enjoy. Honestly, the bonus material is my favorite part of getting a movie on DVD! I’ve always been a sucker for bloopers, deleted scenes, and actor commentary. Sometimes I enjoy the extras even more than the movie itself.

2019 Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Slate

2019 is going to be an EPIC year in the theaters! I just received the 2019 Walt Disney Studios Pictures slate and I honestly can’t decide which movie I’m most excited for this year. Right now, I think it’s a three-way tie between Avengers: Endgame, Toy Story 4 and Aladdin, but every time I think I’ve got my top 3, I remember another movie that I’m equally excited about.

Deducing that his father’s disappearance is somehow connected to the secretive, reclusive fairy world, cunning Artemis concocts a dangerous plan—so dangerous that he ultimately finds himself in a perilous war of wits with the all-powerful fairies.

Ferdia Shaw is Artemis Fowl in Disney’s ARTEMIS FOWL, an adventure directed by Kenneth Branagh that finds 12-year-old genius Artemis Fowl in a battle of strength and cunning against a powerful, hidden race of fairies.

Mary Poppins has returned to theaters after all these years! Mary Poppins Returns is officially out in theaters everywhere, and it’s a must-see family movie this holiday season! My family and I were able to attend a screening on Monday night, and although our seats were free, no other compensation has been received for this post. All thoughts are my own.

In 1964, Mary Poppins stole our hearts and has continued to be a family favorite since then. I’m not sure exactly what I was expecting with Disney’s latest release, Mary Poppins Returns, but I certainly didn’t think it would so perfectly capture the essence of the original movie like it did.

I’m sure you’ve caught the trailer already, but just in case, here’s a sneak peek into the new film:

About Mary Poppins Returns

In Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns,” an all new original musical and sequel, Mary Poppins is back to help the next generation of the Banks family find the joy and wonder missing in their lives following a personal loss. Emily Blunt (“A Quiet Place,” “The Girl on the Train”) stars as the practically-perfect nanny with unique magical skills who can turn any ordinary task into an unforgettable, fantastic adventure and LinManuel Miranda (“Hamilton,” “Moana”) plays her friend Jack, an optimistic street lamplighter who helps bring light—and life—to the streets of London.

Carrying on in her mother’s tradition, Jane Banks campaigns for workers’ rights and provides a helping hand to Michael’s family. When the family suffers a personal loss, Mary Poppins magically re-enters their lives and with Jack’s help, brings joy and wonder back into their home.

Angela Lansbury appears as the Balloon Lady, a treasured character from the PL Travers books and Dick Van Dyke is Mr. Dawes, Jr., the retired chairman of the bank now run by Firth’s character.

PL Travers first introduced the world to the no-nonsense nanny in her 1934 children’s book “Mary Poppins.” However, the subsequent adventures of Mary Poppins remained only on the pages of the seven other PL Travers’ books…until now. “Mary Poppins Returns” is drawn from the wealth of material in these additional books. The film takes place in 1930s Depression-era London 24 years after the first film was set. Michael Banks works for the same financial institution that employed his father and still lives at 17 Cherry Tree Lane with his three children, Annabel, John and Georgie and their housekeeper Ellen.

“Mary Poppins Returns” is directed by Rob Marshall (“Into the Woods,” “Chicago”). The screenplay is by David Magee (“Life of Pi”) and the screen story is by Magee & Rob Marshall & John DeLuca (“Into the Woods”) based upon the Mary Poppins Stories by PL Travers. The producers are John DeLuca, p.g.a., Rob Marshall, p.g.a., and Marc Platt, p.g.a. (“La La Land”) with Callum McDougall serving as executive producer. The music score is by Marc Shaiman (“Hairspray”) and the film features all new original songs with music by Shaiman and lyrics by Scott Wittman (“Smash”) and Shaiman.

Emily Blunt is Mary Poppins and Lin-Manuel Miranda is Jack in Disney’s MARY POPPINS RETURNS, a sequel to the 1964 MARY POPPINS, which takes audiences on an entirely new adventure with the practically perfect nanny and the Banks family.

The film also stars Ben Whishaw (“Spectre”) as Michael Banks; Emily Mortimer (“Hugo”) as Jane Banks; Julie Walters (“Harry Potter” films) as the Banks’ housekeeper Ellen; Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh and introducing Joel Dawson as the Banks’ children, with Colin Firth (“The King’s Speech”) as Fidelity Fiduciary Bank’s William Weatherall Wilkins; and Meryl Streep (“Florence Foster Jenkins”) as Mary’s eccentric cousin, Topsy.

What I Thought About Mary Poppins Returns

I adored Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda as Mary Poppins and Jack (who was mentored by Bert and met Mary when he was a young boy). I was surprised by how well Emily captured the essence of Julie Andrews’ Mary Poppins character. Her personality was spot on! Jack was a fun new character with a lot of heart.

As I mentioned at the beginning of the post, I was not expecting Mary Poppins Returns to “feel” so similar to the original Mary Poppins. The all-new music and the new story line captured the magic and joy and silliness of Mary Poppins and really felt like an older movie from a much different generation versus a different version of the family movies we see produced today.

Mary Poppins Returns is goofy and bright and toe-tapping for the whole family – from little ones who will be dazzled by the songs and colorful scenes and costumes to the parents and grandparents who will enjoy the nostalgia of seeing Mary Poppins and a grown up Jane and Michael Banks again. If you’re expecting a run-of-the-mill cute family film, you might be disappointed. Mary Poppins Returns is not like most other movies these days. If you expect something different and surprising and delightful, then you’ll enjoy every minute of this new flick.

Mary Poppins Returns is already stacking up the award nominations, and I’m not surprised at all. I expect this movie to go down as a modern classic.

Ralph Breaks the Internet is finally in theaters! We’ve been waiting for 6 years to see what happened to Ralph and Vanellope and all of their fellow arcade friends. My family and I were invited to see a screening this week just before the movie was released in theaters. Although our tickets were free, all thoughts are our own.

Friendship isn’t always rosy. Ralph and Vanellope ended Wreck It Ralph as kindred spirits and good friends. It’s heart-warming to see how their friendship has grown since we’ve seen them last. One of my favorite aspects of Ralph Breaks the Internet is that we get to see Ralph and Vanellope struggling through some not-so-uncommon friendship challenges. It’s important for kids (and adults!) to be reminded that we can work through our disagreements and trials. Friends are friends through the good times and the bad times.

PAYING THEIR DUES – In “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” video game bad guy Ralph and fellow misfit Vanellope von Schweetz venture into the expansive and thrilling world of the internet. In an effort to find a replacement part for Vanellope’s arcade game, Sugar Rush, Ralph and Vanellope successfully bid at eBay, only to learn they’ll actually have to pay for their purchase. ©2018 Disney. Exploring the Internet (for the first time!): The clever portrayal of the internet is fun and exciting, and leaves movie-goers of all ages with a lot to think about. From the know-it-all, predict-it-all KnowsMore, the search bar guy, to the way that real people are portrayed as avatars when they’re online, to the annoying pop up ads that bombard Ralph and Vanellope at every turn….I was laughing the entire time (mostly because it was all too accurate!).

ASK ME ANYTHING – When video game bad guy Ralph and fellow misfit Vanellope von Schweetz find themselves in the expansive world of the internet, they turn to a search engine named KnowsMore – literally a know-it-all – for answers in hopes of tracking down a replacement part for Vanellope’s game Sugar Rush. Let’s hear it for the princesses! I loved how Disney brought all of the princesses into one space and allowed us to see them interacting together. The princess sequence was my favorite part of the movie! I loved reading these quotes from the voices of the Disney princesses and what they enjoyed about coming together for their scene with Vanellope.

ROYAL REUNION – In “Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck It Ralph 2,” Vanellope von Schweetz—along with her best friend Ralph—ventures into the uncharted world of the internet. When she finds herself surrounded by Disney princesses, she’s surprised to learn that she actually has a lot in common with them. Oh, the Easter Eggs! To say that there are clever Easter eggs throughout the movie is an understatement. You will find plenty of fun references – especially for Disney fans! I think I’ll need to watch the movie a few more times to catch them all. I see some fun “Ralph Breaks the Internet” Easter egg hunt check lists in the future!

NUMBERS GAME – In Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” Ralph and Vanellope find themselves in need of making some serious cash in order to purchase a replacement steering wheel for her game, Sugar Rush. Fortunately, a Netizen named Yesss—the head algorithm of a trend-making website called BuzzzTube—has a plan. Everything is so relatable. It’s hard for my kids to imagine a world without the internet. It’s such a huge part of their daily lives – from waking up each morning with Alexa to doing all of their school work on Chromebooks to being able to look up an answer to any question that pops in their heads. But I grew up in a world without the internet. I loved watching Ralph and Vanellope experience the internet for the first time (and poke fun of so many things that have become normal to us now!).

BUSTED – In “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” Ralph and Vanellope find themselves in need of making some serious cash in order to purchase a replacement part for her game, Sugar Rush. Following a tip from a local Netizen, the two venture into the gritty online racing game Slaughter Race to swipe the prized car of Shank, the game’s tough-as-nails boss – but she’s not about to let them get away that easily. ©2018 Disney. A word about the scariness factor: Little ones who are easily scared may get intimidated by the Ralph virus-monster. Nothing violent or particularly scary happens, but the character could be seen as intimidating.

Final verdict: My kids and I all agreed – Ralph Breaks the Internet is a must-see movie. I highly recommend it for families this holiday season.

My 13-year-old said, after leaving the theater, “That was a LOT better than I thought it would be. Sometimes sequels, especially after a long wait, are not the same quality as the first movies, but this one was really good. It had a different feel, but it was really good in its own way.”

WINSTON DEAVOR (voice of Bob Odenkirk) leads a world-class telecommunications company alongside his genius sister, Evelyn. Meet a New Group of Supers

“WANNABE” SUPERS are a group of second-rate Supers who aspire to join the ranks of the Incredibles, Frozone and other popular heroes. They team up with the Deavors to help bring Supers back.

· VOYD is a young, overeager mega-fan of Elastigirl. Her super power is the ability to divert and manipulate objects around her by creating voids that allow the objects to appear and disappear. Sophia Bush lends her voice to Voyd.

· BRICK is super tough with mega muscles and a fearless spirit that showcases her strong name.

· REFLUX is a senior who has the unsettling super power of heaving hot lava, which helps him break into some of the most secure locales.

· It’s mind over matter for KRUSHAUER who has the power of telekinesis. This guy can crush a car without even laying a hand on it.

· SCREECH sports big owl-like eyes and a head that rotates 360 degrees. He can fly, thanks to a pair of wings he made to complete his look, but his real power is a high-pitched screech that can break glass.

· HE-LECTRIX can shoot lightning bolts from his fingertips. He’s high voltage, so it’s best to steer clear.

Who else was beyond excited when they heard the news that Incredibles 2 was coming to theaters?? There’s nothing like a 14 year wait to whet the appetite for more! I was thrilled to have the opportunity to receive Incredibles 2 on Blu-ray/DVD – there was never any question that I would be adding this movie to our family’s Disney/Pixar collection. We loved it in theaters and enjoyed it just as much at home. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Amazon affiliate links are used within this post.

My husband still believes that The Incredibles (2004) is one of the best animated movies of all time, if not the TOP. He loves it. We all do. Not only did The Incredibles win Oscars®, but it earned a 93% positive critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes and surpassed $1 billion at the global box office (it is one of the highest-grossing animated films of all time).

Fourteen years is a long time to wait for a sequel, but Incredibles 2 hit the mark and was worth the wait. I couldn’t believe how easily the story picked up right where we left off. It was exciting, funny and action-packed. And it felt SO good to see the Parr family, Edna, and Frozone again.

Incredibles 2 is available on Digital in HD and 4K Ultra HD and on Movies Anywhere as of October 23, and will be available for purchase on Blu-ray 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray DVD and On-Demand on November 6.

I love watching a good movie (especially while sorting and folding laundry in my family room) but one of my favorite things to do is dive into the bonus features on DVDs. Who would have guessed that bonus features could be just as enjoyable as the movie itself?? Granted, I’ve always been the type to want to discover the extra details about a story. When I was a kid (long before the internet), I’d pull out our encyclopedias to research historical topics discussed in the books I read. I was known for reading every single book and short story that an author I liked had written. And if I found out that a movie I had just watched was based on a book, you’d better believe I’d check it out of the library (because I knew the book would have more details that I craved).
