I was invited, along with my husband and a theater-full of local press, to see an early screening of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is in theaters across the US!

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Trailer

ABOUT Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Lucasfilm and director J.J. Abrams join forces once again to take viewers on an epic journey to a galaxy far, far away with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the riveting conclusion of the seminal Skywalker saga, where new legends will be born and the final battle for freedom is yet to come.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker {Spoiler-Free Review}

The film stars Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Anthony Daniels, Naomi Ackie, Domhnall Gleeson, Richard E. Grant, Lupita Nyong’o, Keri Russell, Joonas Suotamo, Kelly Marie Tran, with Ian McDiarmid and Billy Dee Williams

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is directed by J.J. Abrams and produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Abrams and Michelle Rejwan. Callum Greene, Tommy Gormley and Jason McGatlin serve as executive producers. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was written by J.J. Abrams & Chris Terrio.

Spoiler-Free Thoughts on The Film

Apparently, my husband and I have unpopular opinions when it comes to Star Wars movies. Dale was raised on the original Star Wars trilogy movies. He knows those movies backwards and forwards. He has some STRONG opinions about what excellent examples of cinema they are, especially since they were made in an age without the high tech special effects that we have today.

And as huge of a Star Wars fan as he has always been, he has NOT been a fan of the modern additions to the Star Wars saga. I’ll leave it at that.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker {Spoiler-Free Review}

Daisy Ridley is Rey in STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER

He and I have, however, really enjoyed the side stories, such as Solo: A Star Wars Story and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

In other words, we tend to love the movies that aren’t received as well critically. but I know we’re not alone.

What I’m getting to is that we both agreed that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was the best of the modern Star Wars saga movies. There were many elements in the movie that made it feel more like the original, the action was excellent, the special effects were very well done (I was especially impressed with how they handled Leia in this film!), and over-all I thought it was a great way to end the saga.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker {Spoiler-Free Review}

Joonas Suotamo is Chewbacca and Billy Dee Williams is Lando Calrissian in STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER

Was it a perfect movie? Not by a long shot. Was it entertaining? Heck, yeah.

The thing that I noticed as we were making the hour-long drive back home from the screening theater is that the movie made me THINK. I noticed the symbolism more with this movie than with any of the previous movies, and I felt like you could write thorough college-level papers examining the parallels and lesson to be learned from the script.

Family-friendly?

Parents often ask how child-friendly PG and PG-13 movies are (note: this movie is rated PG-13). As expected from a Sci-Fi action movie like this, there are plenty of duels and fights, possible scary-looking characters, and intense action, but nothing that you wouldn’t expect. If you’ve seen the other Star Wars movies with your kids, then this will fit right in.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker {Spoiler-Free Review}

Joonas Suotamo is Chewbacca, Oscar Isaac is Poe Dameron, Daisy Ridley is Rey and John Boyega is Finn in STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER

Many thanks to Sony Pictures Home Entertainment for sending me a review copy of Spider-Man: Far From Home to add to our own home entertainment collection. All thoughts about the movie and bonus features are my own. Amazon affiliate links are used to link to the product should you be interested in getting a copy to add to your collection, too.

Spiderman Far From Home DVD

It’s not very often that I see a movie in the theater more than one time. But I enjoyed Spider-Man: Far From Home so much that I saw it not once, not twice, but FOUR times in the theater. And amazingly, I was still just as excited to see it again when it came out on DVD, Blu-ray and Ultra HD this week.

If you haven’t gotten your copy yet, I suggest that you head out to the store or click on over to Amazon to buy it ASAP.

Spider-man Far From Home DVD

If you haven’t see the movie yet, here’s a little blurb about what to expect from the latest installment.

About Spider-Man: Far From Home

Tom Holland returns as everyone’s favorite web-slinger in SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME, the next chapter after Spider-Man: Homecoming. Our friendly neighborhood wall-crawler decides to join his best friends Ned, MJ, and the rest of the gang on a European vacation. However, Peter’s plans to leave super heroics behind for a few weeks are quickly scrapped when he begrudgingly agrees to help Nick Fury uncover the mystery of several elemental creature attacks! Spider-Man and Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) join forces to fight the havoc unleashed across the continent but all is not as it seems.

SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME stars Tom Holland (Spider–Man: Homecoming) as Peter Parker, Samuel L. Jackson (Spider–Man: Homecoming) as Nick Fury, Jon Favreau (The Lion King) as Happy Hogan, Zendaya (“Euphoria”) as MJ, and Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler) as Mysterio.

Spider-man Far From Home DVD

Jake Gyllenhaal is Mysterio in Columbia Pictures’ SPIDER-MAN: ™ FAR FROM HOME.

Spider-Man: Far From Home is rated PG-13 for sci-fi action violence, some language and brief suggestive comments.

And now…my absolute favorite thing about adding movies to my home collection: all the bonus features! Yesterday, I sat down in front of the TV and watched all of the bonus materials. So. Much. Fun.

My favorite bonus feature is always the gag reel and bloopers. I love seeing how the cast interacts with each other and all of the fun they have together when making the film. My kids loved hearing Tom Holland revert to his normal British accent when he came out of character to laugh or tease a fellow actor.

I also enjoyed seeing the clip highlighting the stunts found in Spider-Man: Far From Home. My admiration for Tom Holland grew by leaps and bounds (pun intended). I couldn’t believe the athleticism and skill that he displayed by doing most of his stunts on his own. Wow.

What are your favorite bonus features to watch?

Bonus Materials Include:

  • Suit Up: The suit doesn’t make the hero – but it does play a big role in who they are and who they can become. This piece examines all of Peter’s different suits in the movie, and with behind the scenes footage, we see why some suits are better than others.
  • Far, FAR, Far from Home: The film’s illustrious locations serve story points and establish tone, but they’re also amazing to travel to! Hear from the cast on their experiences filming on-location.
  • It Takes Two: A special look at the chemistry between Jon Watts and Tom Holland.
  • Fury & Hill: MCU stalwarts Cobie Smulders and Samuel L. Jackson are back as Agent Maria Hill & Nick Fury!
  • The Ginter-Riva Effect: A look at the villain sub-plot and how William Ginter-Riva ties Spider-Man: Far From Home all the way back to the beginning of the MCU.
  • Thank You, Mrs. Parker: A look at Marisa Tomei’s reimagining of Aunt May, from Homecoming to Far From Home.
  • The Brother’s Trust: A quick look into some of the amazing work Tom Holland and his brothers have done through their charity, The Brothers Trust.
  • The Jump Off: Interviews with the cast & crew take us through all of the amazing stunts of Far From Home.
Spider-man Far From Home DVD

MJ (Zendaya) catches a ride from Spider-Man in Columbia Pictures’ SPIDER-MAN: ™ FAR FROM HOME.

  • Now You See Me: We examine the evolution of Mysterio and why Jake Gyllenhaal was the perfect fit for the role.
  • Stealthy Easter Eggs: Allow E.D.I.T.H. to reveal some of the hidden Easter Eggs you may have missed!
  • Select Scene Pre–Vis: A side by side comparison of the Pre-Vis with the film
  • Gag Reel & Outakes
  • Never-Before-Seen Alternate & Extended Scenes

I know you’ve been counting down the days. I’m sure you’re just as excited as I am to say that Toy Story 4 is finally here!! The family and I were thrilled to be able to catch a screening of the newest Toy Story movie a few days before it was released in theaters. Although our tickets were comped, all thoughts about the movie are our own.

Toy Story 4

ABOUT “TOY STORY 4”:

Woody (voice of Tom Hanks) has always been confident about his place in the world, and that his priority is taking care of his kid, whether that’s Andy or Bonnie. So, when Bonnie’s beloved new craft-project-turned-toy, Forky (voice of Tony Hale), declares himself as “trash” and not a toy, Woody takes it upon himself to show Forky why he should embrace being a toy. But when Bonnie takes the whole gang on her family’s road trip excursion, Woody ends up on an unexpected detour that includes a reunion with his long-lost friend Bo Peep (voice of Annie Potts).

Toy Story 4

LOST AND FOUND – In Disney and Pixar’s “Toy Story 4,” Woody is reunited with his long-lost friend Bo Peep, who’s been on the road for years. She’s become an adventure-seeking free spirit whose strength and sarcasm belie her delicate porcelain exterior. Featuring the voice of Annie Potts as Bo Peep, “Toy Story 4” opens in U.S. theaters on June 21, 2019. ©2019 Disney/Pixar. All Rights Reserved.

After years of being on her own, Bo’s adventurous spirit and life on the road belie her delicate porcelain exterior. As Woody and Bo realize they’re worlds apart when it comes to life as a toy, they soon come to find that’s the least of their worries. Directed by Josh Cooley (“Riley’s First Date?”), and produced by Mark Nielsen (associate producer “Inside Out”) and Jonas Rivera (“Inside Out,” “Up”), Disney and Pixar’s “Toy Story 4” ventures to U.S. theaters on June 21, 2019.

How Our Family Reacted to Toy Story 4

I remember when we saw the original Toy Story in theaters. My husband and I were shocked that the story line was so captivating. We were expecting a fun family movie, but what we got was a deeply touching, thoughtful, and totally hilarious film that everyone in the family could appreciate.

Toy Story 4

AND BEYOND – Buzz Lightyear is back on the big screen in Disney and Pixar’s “Toy Story 4,” joining Woody and the whole gang on an eye-opening road trip that takes them to unexpected places, including a carnival. Featuring Tim Allen as the voice of Buzz, “Toy Story 4” opens in U.S. theaters on June 21, 2019. ©2019 Disney/Pixar. All Rights Reserved.

It’s rare for a second or a third movie in a franchise to come anywhere close to the first when it’s as good as Toy Story was. Second and third time around, I went to the movie theater expecting to be let down…at least a little. And yet, Woody and Buzz and all of their friends never let me down.

This movie was the same for me. Dare I say even better? Toy Story 4 exceeded my expectations (and at this point my expectations are pretty high when it comes to Toy Story). I laughed, I cried, and I felt like I was back with old friends.

Toy Story 4

HANGIN’ AROUND – In Disney·Pixar’s “Toy Story 4,” Buzz Lightyear finds himself among a host of carnival prizes—including Ducky and Bunny, who’ve been waiting a long time to be won. They aren’t exactly welcoming to the Space Ranger—the odds are already stacked against them, and who needs that kind of competition? Featuring Tim Allen as the voice of Buzz, Keegan-Michael Key as the voice of Ducky and Jordan Peele as the voice of Bunny, “Toy Story 4” opens in U.S. theaters on June 21, 2019. ©2019 Disney•Pixar. All Rights Reserved.

My husband’s reaction was the biggest shock for me. While I tend to enjoy a movie for its entertainment value (and don’t get too critical unless it bores, offends or creeps me out), my husband is a “critical” movie critic. He likes to tear movies apart for their flaws.

He found none. He laughed throughout the movie and could not stop singing its praises as we walked out of the theater.

I think all families that have seen the previous Toy Story movies should see Toy Story 4 in theaters. Yes, I do recommend watching the first three movies if you haven’t already. I loved that there was a quick “refresher” sequence at the beginning of Toy Story 4 so everybody knew where the movie was starting.

One word of warning: some young children might be scared by the ventriloquist dummies (they are creepy!) but otherwise there is nothing in the movie that stood out to me as something to keep young kids away from.

Toy Story 4

GABBY GABBY – In Disney•Pixar’s “Toy Story 4,” Woody finds himself in Second Chance Antiques, home to an adorable, talking pull-string doll from the 1950s and her crew of voiceless ventriloquist dummies. Unfortunately for Gabby Gabby, a manufacturing defect in her pull-string voice box has left her sounding anything but adorable. Christina Hendricks lends her voice to Gabby Gabby. “Toy Story 4” opens in U.S. theaters on June 21, 2019.
©2019 Disney•Pixar. All Rights Reserved.

Did you know?

  • “Toy Story,” originally released on Nov. 22, 1995, was the first fully computer animated feature film and the highest grossing movie of the year. It was nominated for three Oscars® and two Golden Globes®.
  • Toy Story 4

TOY STORY 4 – (L-R) Trixie, Buttercup, Mr. Pricklepants, Dolly, Buzz Lightyear, Hamm, Rex, Aliens, Jessie, Slinky Dog, Bullseye and Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head. ©2019 Disney/Pixar. All Rights Reserved.

  • “Toy Story 2” is the first film ever to be entirely created, mastered and exhibited digitally. It was also the first animated sequel to gross more than its original, breaking opening weekend box office records in the U.S., UK and Japan, becoming the highest grossing animated release of 1999. It won the Golden Globe for best motion picture – comedy or musical. It won a Grammy® for best song written for a motion picture, television or other visual media (Randy Newman, “When She Loved Me”).
  • Toy Story 4

THREE-IN-ONE – He’s not a fork. He’s not a spoon. And most of all, Forky is not a toy! At least that’s what he thinks. Bonnie created him from an assortment of supplies Woody’s retrieved from the kindergarten trash can. So, it’s no wonder Forky feels strongly that he’s trash and not a toy. Featuring Tony Hale as the voice of Forky, Disney and Pixar’s “Toy Story 4” opens in U.S. theaters on June 21, 2019. ©2019 Disney/Pixar. All Rights Reserved.

  • Released in 2010, “Toy Story 3” won Oscars® for best animated feature film and best achievement in music written for motion pictures, original song (Randy Newman/“We Belong Together”). The film also won a Golden Globe® and BAFTA for best animated film. It was the second Pixar film to be nominated for the best picture Oscar. It’s also Pixar’s second highest-grossing film of all time behind “Incredibles 2.”

Captain Marvel is now officially available on DVD/Blu-ray (and digital download, of course!)! I’ve been waiting for this day because my husband missed seeing Captain Marvel in the theaters and I was eager to share it with him. We were finally able to watch it together this weekend after our review copy arrived. You can order yours now on Amazon (affiliate link) or pick it up at your local stores!

Captain Marvel

About Captain Marvel

Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios’ CAPTAIN MARVEL is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.

The film stars Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Rune Temte, Algenis Perez Soto, Mckenna Grace, with Annette Bening, with Clark Gregg, and Jude Law. Marvel Studios’ CAPTAIN MARVEL is produced by Kevin Feige and directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Jonathan Schwartz, Patricia Whitcher and Stan Lee are the executive producers.

Check out the trailer here if you haven’t seen it yet (or refresh yourself if it’s been a while!).

I loved Captain Marvel in theaters and I appreciated it even more on DVD. Captain Marvel has a very different feel compared to the other Marvel Universe films, probably because in this film none of the other super heroes exist. And unlike the other (non-Avengers) movies that have come out, there are no other super hero carry-over characters or secondary story lines.

Captain Marvel takes place in the 1990s, a time I am personally very familiar with. It was fun to see some cultural things that I remember from that time of my life. I loved seeing a younger Nick Fury and Agent Coulson.

Captain Marvel

Now that Captain Marvel is out on Blu-ray/DVD, it’s a great time to catch it for the first time (if you didn’t see it in the theater like my husband) or catch it again. And BONUS: now that the DVD/Blu-ray is out, there are hours of extra content to enjoy. Honestly, the bonus material is my favorite part of getting a movie on DVD! I’ve always been a sucker for bloopers, deleted scenes, and actor commentary. Sometimes I enjoy the extras even more than the movie itself.

Illumination’s tenth feature, The Secret Life of Pets 2, is the highly anticipated sequel to the 2016 comedic blockbuster that had the biggest opening weekend ever for an original film, animated or otherwise.

Packed with Illumination’s signature irreverence and subversive humor, this new chapter explores the emotional lives of our pets, the deep bond between them and the families that love them, and answers the question that has long intrigued every pet owner: What are your pets really doing when you’re not at home?

The Secret Life of Pets 2

Terrier Max (Patton Oswalt) is coping with some major life changes. His owner (Ellie Kemper) is now married and has a toddler, Liam. Max is so worried about protecting the boy that he develops a nervous tic. On a family trip to a farm, Max and mutt Duke (Eric Stonestreet) encounter canine-intolerant cows, hostile foxes and a terrifying turkey, all of which only elevates Max’s anxiety. Luckily, Max gets some guidance from veteran farm dog Rooster (Harrison Ford, making his animated-film debut), who pushes Max to ditch his neuroses, find his inner alpha, and give Liam a little more freedom.

Meanwhile, while her owner is away, plucky Pomeranian Gidget (Jenny Slate) tries to rescue Max’s favorite toy from a cat-packed apartment with a little help from her feline friend, Chloe (Lake Bell), who has discovered the joys of catnip.

The Secret Life of Pets 2

(from left) Chloe (Lake Bell) and her owner in Illumination’s The Secret Life of Pets 2, directed by Chris Renaud.

And crazy-but-cute bunny Snowball (Kevin Hart) gets delusions of grandeur that he’s an actual superhero after his owner Molly starts dressing him in superhero pajamas. But when Daisy (Tiffany Haddish), a fearless Shih Tzu, shows up to ask for Snowball’s help on a dangerous mission, he’ll have to summon the courage to become the hero he’s only been pretending to be.

Can Max, Snowball, Gidget and the rest of the gang find the inner courage to face their biggest fears?

The Secret Life of Pets 2

The Secret Life of Pets 2 is produced by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and his longtime collaborator Janet Healy, the visionary team behind Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch and the Despicable Me and Minions franchise, and is written by returning Pets screenwriter Brian Lynch. The film is directed by returning filmmaker Chris Renaud, who also directed Illumination’s Despicable Me series and Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax.

My family’s thoughts on Secret Life of Pets 2

I’m not sure if it was the fact that we now have a dog AND a cat at home or if the movie was JUST THAT GOOD, but either way, we all thought that The Secret Life of Pets 2 was better than the first, and that’s saying a lot. I have to say that so many of the dog and cat stereotypes that they play on in the movie are SPOT ON. We were laughing the entire movie!

The Secret Life of Pets 2

Our theater was completely full of kids of all ages, parents, and adults without kids (we couldn’t even sit together because the theater was that packed!). I loved hearing laughter from ALL of them, which told me that it’s a fantastic movie for all ages. Even though my kids are older now (14 and up) I still love finding family-friendly movies that everyone – from toddlers to teenagers to old folks like myself – can enjoy together.

And although my family’s experience was certainly enhanced by the last 2 years of having pets share our living space, this is still a funny movie regardless of your pet status. I absolutely adored the interaction of the pets with their new family member (toddler/preschooler Liam) and I like to imagine that our pets feel the same way about our kids.

The Secret Life of Pets 2

I give this an “everyone should see it” stamp of approval, although it’s definitely one that would be fine to wait to see on DVD if you can’t make it out to the theater. But if you’re like me and LOVE to find indoor activities for the kids now that the weather is heating up, then schedule to see a matinee and don’t forget the popcorn.

Mary Poppins has returned to theaters after all these years! Mary Poppins Returns is officially out in theaters everywhere, and it’s a must-see family movie this holiday season! My family and I were able to attend a screening on Monday night, and although our seats were free, no other compensation has been received for this post. All thoughts are my own.

Mary Poppins Returns

In 1964, Mary Poppins stole our hearts and has continued to be a family favorite since then. I’m not sure exactly what I was expecting with Disney’s latest release, Mary Poppins Returns, but I certainly didn’t think it would so perfectly capture the essence of the original movie like it did.

I’m sure you’ve caught the trailer already, but just in case, here’s a sneak peek into the new film:

About Mary Poppins Returns

In Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns,” an all new original musical and sequel, Mary Poppins is back to help the next generation of the Banks family find the joy and wonder missing in their lives following a personal loss. Emily Blunt (“A Quiet Place,” “The Girl on the Train”) stars as the practically-perfect nanny with unique magical skills who can turn any ordinary task into an unforgettable, fantastic adventure and LinManuel Miranda (“Hamilton,” “Moana”) plays her friend Jack, an optimistic street lamplighter who helps bring light—and life—to the streets of London.

Mary Poppins Returns - Movie Review and Activity Sheets

Carrying on in her mother’s tradition, Jane Banks campaigns for workers’ rights and provides a helping hand to Michael’s family. When the family suffers a personal loss, Mary Poppins magically re-enters their lives and with Jack’s help, brings joy and wonder back into their home.

Angela Lansbury appears as the Balloon Lady, a treasured character from the PL Travers books and Dick Van Dyke is Mr. Dawes, Jr., the retired chairman of the bank now run by Firth’s character.

Mary Poppins Returns - Movie Review and Activity Sheets

PL Travers first introduced the world to the no-nonsense nanny in her 1934 children’s book “Mary Poppins.” However, the subsequent adventures of Mary Poppins remained only on the pages of the seven other PL Travers’ books…until now. “Mary Poppins Returns” is drawn from the wealth of material in these additional books. The film takes place in 1930s Depression-era London 24 years after the first film was set. Michael Banks works for the same financial institution that employed his father and still lives at 17 Cherry Tree Lane with his three children, Annabel, John and Georgie and their housekeeper Ellen.

Mary Poppins Returns - Movie Review and Activity Sheets

“Mary Poppins Returns” is directed by Rob Marshall (“Into the Woods,” “Chicago”). The screenplay is by David Magee (“Life of Pi”) and the screen story is by Magee & Rob Marshall & John DeLuca (“Into the Woods”) based upon the Mary Poppins Stories by PL Travers. The producers are John DeLuca, p.g.a., Rob Marshall, p.g.a., and Marc Platt, p.g.a. (“La La Land”) with Callum McDougall serving as executive producer. The music score is by Marc Shaiman (“Hairspray”) and the film features all new original songs with music by Shaiman and lyrics by Scott Wittman (“Smash”) and Shaiman.

Mary Poppins Returns - Movie Review and Activity Sheets

Emily Blunt is Mary Poppins and Lin-Manuel Miranda is Jack in Disney’s MARY POPPINS RETURNS, a sequel to the 1964 MARY POPPINS, which takes audiences on an entirely new adventure with the practically perfect nanny and the Banks family.

The film also stars Ben Whishaw (“Spectre”) as Michael Banks; Emily Mortimer (“Hugo”) as Jane Banks; Julie Walters (“Harry Potter” films) as the Banks’ housekeeper Ellen; Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh and introducing Joel Dawson as the Banks’ children, with Colin Firth (“The King’s Speech”) as Fidelity Fiduciary Bank’s William Weatherall Wilkins; and Meryl Streep (“Florence Foster Jenkins”) as Mary’s eccentric cousin, Topsy.

What I Thought About Mary Poppins Returns

I adored Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda as Mary Poppins and Jack (who was mentored by Bert and met Mary when he was a young boy). I was surprised by how well Emily captured the essence of Julie Andrews’ Mary Poppins character. Her personality was spot on! Jack was a fun new character with a lot of heart.

Mary Poppins Returns - Movie Review and Activity Sheets

As I mentioned at the beginning of the post, I was not expecting Mary Poppins Returns to “feel” so similar to the original Mary Poppins. The all-new music and the new story line captured the magic and joy and silliness of Mary Poppins and really felt like an older movie from a much different generation versus a different version of the family movies we see produced today.

Mary Poppins Returns - Movie Review and Activity Sheets

Mary Poppins Returns is goofy and bright and toe-tapping for the whole family – from little ones who will be dazzled by the songs and colorful scenes and costumes to the parents and grandparents who will enjoy the nostalgia of seeing Mary Poppins and a grown up Jane and Michael Banks again. If you’re expecting a run-of-the-mill cute family film, you might be disappointed. Mary Poppins Returns is not like most other movies these days. If you expect something different and surprising and delightful, then you’ll enjoy every minute of this new flick.

I’ve had a few of the catchy songs stuck in my head since I saw it in theaters 2 days ago…

Mary Poppins Returns - Movie Review and Activity Sheets

Mary Poppins Returns is already stacking up the award nominations, and I’m not surprised at all. I expect this movie to go down as a modern classic.

Ralph Breaks the Internet is finally in theaters! We’ve been waiting for 6 years to see what happened to Ralph and Vanellope and all of their fellow arcade friends. My family and I were invited to see a screening this week just before the movie was released in theaters. Although our tickets were free, all thoughts are our own.

Note: This is a spoiler-free review. Read on without risk of ruining the movie!

Ralph Breaks The Internet

About Ralph Breaks the Internet

In RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET, video-game bad guy Ralph (voice of John C. Reilly) and best friend Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Sarah Silverman) leave the comforts of Litwak’s arcade in an attempt to save her game, Sugar Rush. Their quest takes them to the vast, uncharted world of the internet where they rely on the citizens of the internet—the Netizens—to help navigate their way.

Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2

INTO THE INTERNET – In “Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2,” Vanellope von Schweetz and Wreck-It Ralph leave the arcade world behind to explore the uncharted and thrilling world of the internet. In this image, Vanellope and Ralph have a breathtaking view of the world wide web, a seemingly never-ending metropolis filled with websites, apps and social media networks. On a quest to save Vanellope’s game, how will these two misfits ever succeed in this vast new world? ©2018 Disney. All Rights Reserved.

Lending a virtual hand are Yesss (voice of Taraji P. Henson), the head algorithm and the heart and soul of the trend-making site “BuzzzTube,” and Shank (voice of Gal Gadot), a tough-as-nails driver from a gritty online auto-racing game called Slaughter Race, a place Vanellope wholeheartedly embraces—so much so that Ralph worries he may lose the only friend he’s ever had.

Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2

BEST FRIENDS – In “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” video game bad guy Ralph and his best buddy Vanellope journey to the internet in search of a replacement part for her game. Vanellope wholeheartedly embraces this new world, while Ralph can’t wait to go home to their comfortable lives. ©2018 Disney. All Rights Reserved.

Directed by Rich Moore (“Zootopia,” “Wreck-It Ralph”) and Phil Johnston (co-writer “Wreck-It Ralph,” “Zootopia,” writer, “Cedar Rapids”), and produced by Clark Spencer (“Zootopia,” “Wreck-It Ralph,” “Bolt,” “Lilo & Stitch”), “Ralph Breaks the Internet” is now in theaters.

My 5 Favorite Things About Ralph Breaks the Internet

Friendship isn’t always rosy. Ralph and Vanellope ended Wreck It Ralph as kindred spirits and good friends. It’s heart-warming to see how their friendship has grown since we’ve seen them last. One of my favorite aspects of Ralph Breaks the Internet is that we get to see Ralph and Vanellope struggling through some not-so-uncommon friendship challenges. It’s important for kids (and adults!) to be reminded that we can work through our disagreements and trials. Friends are friends through the good times and the bad times.

Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2

PAYING THEIR DUES – In “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” video game bad guy Ralph and fellow misfit Vanellope von Schweetz venture into the expansive and thrilling world of the internet. In an effort to find a replacement part for Vanellope’s arcade game, Sugar Rush, Ralph and Vanellope successfully bid at eBay, only to learn they’ll actually have to pay for their purchase. ©2018 Disney. All Rights Reserved.

Exploring the Internet (for the first time!): The clever portrayal of the internet is fun and exciting, and leaves movie-goers of all ages with a lot to think about. From the know-it-all, predict-it-all KnowsMore, the search bar guy, to the way that real people are portrayed as avatars when they’re online, to the annoying pop up ads that bombard Ralph and Vanellope at every turn….I was laughing the entire time (mostly because it was all too accurate!).

Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2

ASK ME ANYTHING – When video game bad guy Ralph and fellow misfit Vanellope von Schweetz find themselves in the expansive world of the internet, they turn to a search engine named KnowsMore – literally a know-it-all – for answers in hopes of tracking down a replacement part for Vanellope’s game Sugar Rush. He frequently gets ahead of himself, finishing people’s sentences in an attempt to guess what they’re going to say. ©2018 Disney. All Rights Reserved.

Let’s hear it for the princesses! I loved how Disney brought all of the princesses into one space and allowed us to see them interacting together. The princess sequence was my favorite part of the movie! I loved reading these quotes from the voices of the Disney princesses and what they enjoyed about coming together for their scene with Vanellope.

Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2

ROYAL REUNION – In “Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck It Ralph 2,” Vanellope von Schweetz—along with her best friend Ralph—ventures into the uncharted world of the internet. When she finds herself surrounded by Disney princesses, she’s surprised to learn that she actually has a lot in common with them. The scene, highlighted in a new trailer for the film, features several of the original princess voices, including Auli‘i Cravalho (“Moana”), Kristen Bell (Anna in “Frozen”), Idina Menzel (Elsa in “Frozen”), Kelly MacDonald (Merida in “Brave”), Mandy Moore (Rapunzel in “Tangled”), Anika Noni Rose (Tiana in “The Princess and the Frog”), Ming-Na Wen (“Mulan”), Irene Bedard (“Pocahontas”), Linda Larkin (Jasmine in “Aladdin”), Paige O’Hara (Belle in “Beauty and the Beast”) and Jodi Benson (Ariel in “The Little Mermaid”).

“The inside jokes and the affectionate nods to the princesses’ original stories make me laugh every time.”
~Linda Larkin, voice of Princess Jasmine, “Aladdin”

“When have all of the Disney princesses been together in one room? I don’t know if it gets better than that.”
~ Idina Menzel, voice of Elsa, “Frozen”

“Over the years, I have had the pleasure of meeting and making friendships with many of the legendary princesses! It has been a blessing to be a part of such a beautiful sisterhood of such strong, intelligent women.”
~ Irene Bedard, voice of Pocahontas, “Pocahontas”

Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2

SELFIE! – In “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” Vanellope von Schweetz hits the internet where she encounters and then befriends the Disney princesses. Filmmakers invited the original voice talent to return to the studio to help bring their characters to life, including Sarah Silverman (Vanellope in “Ralph Breaks the Internet”), Auli‘i Cravalho (“Moana”), Kristen Bell (Anna in “Frozen”), Idina Menzel (Elsa in “Frozen”), Kelly MacDonald (Merida in “Brave”), Mandy Moore (Rapunzel in “Tangled”), Anika Noni Rose (Tiana in “The Princess and the Frog”), Ming-Na Wen (“Mulan”), Irene Bedard (“Pocahontas”), Linda Larkin (Jasmine in “Aladdin”), Paige O’Hara (Belle in “Beauty and the Beast”), and Jodi Benson (Ariel in “The Little Mermaid”). ©2018 Disney. All Rights Reserved.

“My favorite part is the fun, tongue-in-cheek insider humor. It’s really funny but in a respectful, loving way. I think it walks a perfect line.”
~ Paige O’Hara, voice of Belle, “Beauty and the Beast”

“I love seeing the princesses ‘off-duty,’ relaxed and cozy in way we’ve never pictured them before. It gives us a deeper glimpse into their lives and a peek behind the curtain.”
~ Mandy Moore, voice of Rapunzel, “Tangled”

Oh, the Easter Eggs! To say that there are clever Easter eggs throughout the movie is an understatement. You will find plenty of fun references – especially for Disney fans! I think I’ll need to watch the movie a few more times to catch them all. I see some fun “Ralph Breaks the Internet” Easter egg hunt check lists in the future!

Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2

NUMBERS GAME – In Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” Ralph and Vanellope find themselves in need of making some serious cash in order to purchase a replacement steering wheel for her game, Sugar Rush. Fortunately, a Netizen named Yesss—the head algorithm of a trend-making website called BuzzzTube—has a plan. Yesss, who has her finger on the internet’s fast-paced pulse, helps make Ralph the next viral video sensation. ©2018 Disney. All Rights Reserved.

Everything is so relatable. It’s hard for my kids to imagine a world without the internet. It’s such a huge part of their daily lives – from waking up each morning with Alexa to doing all of their school work on Chromebooks to being able to look up an answer to any question that pops in their heads. But I grew up in a world without the internet. I loved watching Ralph and Vanellope experience the internet for the first time (and poke fun of so many things that have become normal to us now!).

Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2

BUSTED – In “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” Ralph and Vanellope find themselves in need of making some serious cash in order to purchase a replacement part for her game, Sugar Rush. Following a tip from a local Netizen, the two venture into the gritty online racing game Slaughter Race to swipe the prized car of Shank, the game’s tough-as-nails boss – but she’s not about to let them get away that easily. ©2018 Disney. All Rights Reserved.

A word about the scariness factor: Little ones who are easily scared may get intimidated by the Ralph virus-monster. Nothing violent or particularly scary happens, but the character could be seen as intimidating.

Final verdict: My kids and I all agreed – Ralph Breaks the Internet is a must-see movie. I highly recommend it for families this holiday season.

My 13-year-old said, after leaving the theater, “That was a LOT better than I thought it would be. Sometimes sequels, especially after a long wait, are not the same quality as the first movies, but this one was really good. It had a different feel, but it was really good in its own way.”

My son and I were invited to a very special screening and Q&A with the cast of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald – the second of five all new adventures in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World™. The movie opens in theaters this weekend, November 16, 2018 and is rated PG-13.

This review and the following Q&A are spoiler-free, so read on without fear of ruining the movie! Many thanks to Warner Bros. Entertainment for the opportunity to see the movie ahead of time! Amazon affiliate links are used below. All thoughts are my own. #WandsReady

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

If you haven’t seen the trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, let’s start there. But really…if you haven’t seen this yet, where have you been hiding the last few months?

About Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

At the end of the first film, the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) was captured by MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne). But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.

The film features an ensemble cast led by Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, with Jude Law and Johnny Depp. The cast also includes, Zoë Kravitz, Callum Turner, Claudia Kim, William Nadylam, Kevin Guthrie, Carmen Ejogo, and Poppy Corby-Tuech.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

“Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” is directed by David Yates, from a screenplay by J.K. Rowling. The film is produced by David Heyman, J.K. Rowling, Steve Kloves and Lionel Wigram.

My Reaction

If you are a fan of Harry Potter (or any part of J.K Rowling’s Wizarding World™) then this movie is a must-see. Fantastic Beasts And Where to Find Them (yes, we totally had to order it on Amazon last month so we’d be ready for Crimes of Grindelwald) was a fun, well-made movie, but the second installment tied Fantastic Beasts and Harry Potter together so well. It was the ultimate backstory, giving as a peek into where our beloved Harry Potter characters were before we met them.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

I love how this trailer focuses on the connections between Fantastic Beasts and the Harry Potter stories:

This movie is much darker than the first, as we get to know Gellert Grindelwald and his plans. However, in my opinion, if your kids have seen any of the Harry Potter movies, they should be just fine seeing Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

My 13-year-old Son’s Experience

My youngest is a huge Harry Potter fan. He creates hand-made replica wands in his free time. So when I received the invitation to go to the screening, AJ told me “If you can bring someone, it HAS to be me.” He spent the morning before the screening re-watching Harry Potter/Fantastic Beasts videos from two of his favorite YouTubers, Super Carlin Brothers. On our way to the theater, he actually wondered out loud if they would be sitting in a theater somewhere at the same time seeing a screening that day, too.

Imagine his shock when he saw them in OUR theater.

I challenged him to go up to the brothers and talk to them before the movie. They were kind enough to suggest taking a picture together, and AJ supplied them each with a wand for the shot.

Super Carlin Brothers

AJ loved the movie, especially the addition of the new characters, and he’s already excited to see it again. He’s also eager for his friends to see it so he can finally talk about the movie with someone other than me.

Q&A with the Cast

I have to start off by saying that the Fantastic Beasts Q&A was broadcast live in our theater and dozens of other theaters throughout the US. The actors were at Universal Studios Hollywood and I was sitting in a theater in Virginia. And, while I did take notes throughout the Q&A session, I don’t have a recording or a transcript of the interview, so quotes are not necessarily word-for-word accurate. It’s still fun to hear the actors’ reactions to the movie.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

Eddie Redmayne spoke about what it was like to return to the magical world in his second Fantastic Beasts movie. He said, “I had so much fun on the first film, and then they got some fresh blood and they raised the game.” Newt Scamander is (and always has been) an outsider, but you see him opening up in this film. “Love is what bring him to Paris. Love opened him up.”

Zoë Kravitz, who played Leta Lestrange, was one of those newcomers to the Fantastic Beasts franchise. She commented that she was “nervous, like the first day of school. The best moment is when they give you your wand. The worst day is when they take it away.”

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

Speaking of wands, the “newbies” let us know that the actors were each given the chance to choose their own wands (except for Gellert – his was already chosen for him!). Before even getting to the set, Jude Law spent time on a family vacation “practicing” wand work with a twig. After all of his practice, he only got to use one spell in the entire movie!

Callum Turner (Theseus Scamander) apparently could have used some extra wand practice. He broke his wand the very first time he used it.

Jude Law addressed the pressure and responsibility of portraying a younger Professor Albus Dumbledore. He said he felt the great responsibility of playing Dumbledore, but appreciated that he was given the freedom to interpret his character himself. He spent a lot of time with author J.K. Rowling before filming the movie, which I’m sure helped

Eddie chimed in, referring to the first time he saw Jude on the set, “Jude encaptured in one look everything Dumbledore is.” He said that Jude had the Dumbledore “twinkle” in his eye.

I agree: Jude was a perfectly magical Dumbledore!

He has been a supporter of Supers returning—all he needs is a hero (or three) to help him change public perception and bring them back into the sunlight.

EVELYN DEAVOR (voice of Catherine Keener), the brilliant brainchild behind her brother Winston’s telecommunications company, knows her way around tech. She loves tinkering with tech, and has never met a problem she can’t solve. When Helen is recruited to help the Deavors bring back Supers, she and Evelyn become fast friends—exchanging ideas, creating strategies and sharing a lot of laughs along the way.

THE UNDERMINER is a greedy villain who hopes to tunnel through the city in an effort to steal everyone’s money from under their noses. Considering the destructive device he’s employed to pull off his mission—it’ll take a hero (or five) to stop him.

Meet a New Group of Supers

New Heroes Nolte Marsigliese

“WANNABE” SUPERS are a group of second-rate Supers who aspire to join the ranks of the Incredibles, Frozone and other popular heroes. They team up with the Deavors to help bring Supers back.

· VOYD is a young, overeager mega-fan of Elastigirl. Her super power is the ability to divert and manipulate objects around her by creating voids that allow the objects to appear and disappear. Sophia Bush lends her voice to Voyd.

· BRICK is super tough with mega muscles and a fearless spirit that showcases her strong name.

· REFLUX is a senior who has the unsettling super power of heaving hot lava, which helps him break into some of the most secure locales.

· It’s mind over matter for KRUSHAUER who has the power of telekinesis. This guy can crush a car without even laying a hand on it.

· SCREECH sports big owl-like eyes and a head that rotates 360 degrees. He can fly, thanks to a pair of wings he made to complete his look, but his real power is a high-pitched screech that can break glass.

· HE-LECTRIX can shoot lightning bolts from his fingertips. He’s high voltage, so it’s best to steer clear.
