This past Saturday, three of my kids and I spent the day at Kings Dominion for the Great Pumpkin Fest. We had a BLAST! Talk about getting us in the Halloween spirit (although the weather felt a whole lot like middle of the summer!). There is something for everyone and EVERY age at Kings Dominion during the month of October!
Weekends starting September 23, and then September 30 to October 29 between 12:00pm and 5:00pm, the Great Pumpkin Fest is open! The Great Pumpkin Fest is a fun activity for the whole family and includes Halloween-themed live shows, Sally’s Pumpkin Painting Patch (decorate and take home a small pumpkin!), Franklin’s Scarecrow Hollow (a kid-friendly maze), Pig Pen’s People Washer (play and splash around in a “pool” of suds!), a petting zoo (adorable animals!!), and so much more! Your favorite rides are open during the day, as well as the entire Planet Snoopy kids’ area.
For more information about the Great Pumpkin Fest, please click here: https://www.kingsdominion.com/things-to-do/the-great-pumpkin-fest
We spent the daylight hours riding a few of our favorite rides and enjoying the Halloween festivities. The kid-friendly activities at Planet Snoopy wound down around 5:00pm, and then the park started the transformation to “HAUNT.”
Although my kids weren’t interested in getting scared, we were all impressed with the length that Kings Dominion went to to decorate for Halloween! We stayed about 90 minutes past sunset, so we were able to experience plenty of the spooky part. We especially enjoyed the after-dark shows, like the The Grave Walkers (a family-friendly wandering band with fun dancers) and the flaming torch juggler.
My 18-year-old was nervous about being scared by costumed monsters while walking around the park, so she purchased one of the No-Boo glowing necklaces and wore it proudly all day. The no-boo necklace worked like a charm once the sun went down and the monsters came out! Don’t worry about your little ones if you plan to stay in Planet Snoopy. Everything in the kids’ area is fun and kid-friendly and not scary at all.
Don’t forget about the free Pre-K pass – you don’t want to miss out on this offer! This special pass grants free admission to 3-5 year olds for the rest of the 2017 season and all of 2018! More info can be found here: https://www.kingsdominion.com/tickets-passes/pre-k-pass
For adults and teens, Kings Dominion goes ALL OUT for their Halloween HAUNT. From costumed “monsters” wandering the park to fog machines to spooky shows, mazes, haunted houses, and rides converted to Halloween themes, there is something for every level of Halloween fan!
Here’s a little of what you can expect: Start your night of fright at the Overlord’s Resurrection, where monsters will be unleashed into the park and out of your worst nightmares. Guests who are brave enough can enjoy eight mazes, five scare zones plus several live shows. If that isn’t enough fun, get your thrill fix on more than 20 rides, including Intimidator
305, as fog and darkness blanket the park.
Test your limits and experience fear beyond your worst nightmares with 5 all-new Skeleton Key rooms exclusive with Fright Lane. You’ll face extra terror as you unlock exclusive chambers and complete sinister tasks in order to escape.

]]>Hello, hello! The weather around here can’t decide if it wants to be fall now or stick with summer for a little while longer. I’m ready to welcome the cooler, not-humid weather, but I’m not quite ready for all things Halloween quite yet. My kids just barely started back to school, didn’t they?
My LuLaRoe business has kept me busy (as if I didn’t have enough on my plate with 4 teens at home and a blog to run!). I’m actually really loving it still, but it would be even better if YOU were there. Come join my LulaRoe shopping group here!
This week, despite my protests that it is too early for Halloween (ha!) we’re featuring Halloween treats! Here’s one of my favorite festive (and not spooky at all!) recipes:

]]>It seems like yesterday that our air conditioning was cranking because the weather was still stifling hot, the kids were enjoying the last few carefree days of summer, and the leaves were all green.
Suddenly – seemingly overnight – the weather is crisp and cool, the kids are busy with their school year schedules and activities, and the leaves are all turning gorgeous shades of red, orange, and yellow.
I love the fall! The colors, the weather, and my birthday. There’s so much about the fall to love!
To celebrate the fall’s first big holiday, I’ve pulled together a fun, Halloween-themed scavenger hunt. I love finding things for kids that get them up and active, and interacting with other kids.
So print off this month’s scavenger hunt, grab a few pencils, and get active!
Get ready to search for all things related to Halloween! The best thing about this scavenger hunt is that it can be played many different ways – use the printable list as a guide and make the game your own. Simply print off as many sheets as you need, and then go have some fun!

]]>The weather has officially turned comfortably cool and on my drive yesterday morning, I noticed the leaves turning gorgeous fall colors. I’m celebrating a birthday at the end of this week with a girl’s weekend at Hersheypark (for Hersheypark in the Dark! I can’t wait!). And then a few days later, I travel back across the country to spend a week with my mom and 2 nephews while my brother and sister-in-law enjoy a little getaway. Life is good. Busy, hectic, and pretty messy most days. But good.
Can you believe that it’s Halloween season? I’m sure you’ve seen Halloween at the stores and all over Pinterest. Whether or not you’ve got kids who like to dress up in fun costumes and trick or treat, you can’t deny how fun Halloween treats are! We’ve gathered a bunch of our favorites from last week’s Delicious Dishes recipe party below. But first, here are two of my own Halloween recipes that I know you’re going to love!

Last week, I was challenged to come up with a quick and easy Halloween treat using Snack Pack Pudding Cups. While I was not asked to put up a blog post, the social promotion of the “recipe” was so well-received that I thought it would be a shame not to share them here. Note: I am not being compensated for this post, but affiliate links are used.
I made these pudding cups while the kids were in school, and since I didn’t want to eat them ALL (ok, I kind of did…) I stuck a few of them in the refrigerator for later. When the kids came home, I heard, “Mom! Can I eat one of those! Those are SO COOL!” coming from the kitchen. Yes, you know you’ve come up with a winning combination when the kids react like that.
Seriously, these are so easy to make. They’re perfect for a fun Halloween snack or class Halloween party. I would even encourage kids to make their own Ghosts in a Graveyard pudding cups by putting all of the ingredients in a bowl and letting them decorate their cups on their own. If you’ve ever been a room mother for an elementary school Halloween party, you know that you need to come up with a few fun and engaging activities for the kids to do during the party or else all is chaos.
Here’s how you make your own Ghosts in a Graveyard pudding cups:
Just take a Snack Pack pudding cup of your choice (I used Chocolate Caramel), add chocolate sprinkles, and top with a pumpkin spice Milano cookie decorated as a tombstone with black frosting plus a marshmallow ghost. Easy enough? Totally!
As a bonus, I threw some homemade pumpkin seed granola on top of a tapioca pudding cup and was instantly taken to taste bud heaven. What a glorious combination of flavors!!
All photos were taken on my new iPhone 6S, which is pretty incredible. I’ve never loved a phone quite so much.

One of my favorite things to do around each of the holidays throughout the year when my kids were little was to collect holiday-themed books to read. I always had my eyes open for used holiday books at the thrift store or used book store and, of course, we borrowed books from the library. During the weeks preceding each holiday, we would use those books for our read-out-loud time, and that became part of our holiday celebration.
My kids may be a little too old for Halloween picture books at this point, but I still love this tradition, so I decided to spread that tradition on to you guys. Here are a list of 13 kid-friendly Halloween books, including some of the classic stories I read to my kids (some are even so old that my mom read them to me!) and some that are new from authors that we love. Note: Amazon affiliate links used.
Happy Halloween!
The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything by Linda D. Williams and Megan Lloyd
The Little Old Lady is one of the classic stories that I remember from my childhood. I love the little old lady’s fearless attitude towards the spooky things that happen around her and her clever solution to handle what’s happening. I also love that it teaches kids that sometimes things that seems scary aren’t really that scary after all.
The Berenstain Bears Trick or Treat by Stan Berenstain and Jan Berenstain
This is another classic from my own childhood. Brother and Sister Bear head out to trick or treat and plan to avoid Miz McGrizz’s spooky house. But as they trick or treat, they discover that looks can be deceiving, and they end up having a wonderful, perspective-changing time with Miz McGrizz.

Pete the Cat: Five Little Pumpkins by James Dean
This adorable book finds Pete the Cat rocking out to the classic Halloween children’s song “Five Little Pumpkins.”

Spooky Pookie by Sandra Boynton
From one of my kids’ favorite board book authors, Pookie tries on costumes one by one, but somehow can’t find just the right thing. Pookie’s resolution is adorable!
Pinkalicious Pink or Treat by Victoria Kann
In this cute Pinkalicious story, the mayor has canceled Halloween because a storm has knocked out the town’s power. No Halloween means no Halloween candy. No Halloween jack-o’-lanterns. No Halloween trick-or-treating. No Halloween holiday parties. And worst of all, no Halloween costumes. Pinkalicious is determined to fix the situation so she can wear her perfect costume.

Who’s There on Halloween? Board book by Susan Hagen Nipp and Pamela Conn Beall (Authors), Charles Reasoner (Illustrator)
Who’s There On Halloween? encourages readers to play along and use the clues to name the holiday characters hidden inside. Fun interactive book for toddlers and preschoolers!
It’s Pumpkin Day, Mouse! by Laura Numeroff (Author), Felicia Bond (Illustrator)
Join Mouse from If You Give a Mouse a Cookie as he decorates all the pumpkins in the patch! Although this book was written after the “golden era” of my kids’ read-aloud days, they grew up loving the “If You Give a Mouse” books.

Peanuts: It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown by Charles M. Schulz
This is a board book version of the classic Peanuts Halloween tv movie. It includes reusable stickers that kids can use to interact with the story that they (and we!) all love.
Splat the Cat: What Was That? by Rob Scotton
Halloween should be a black cat’s favorite holiday, but Spat the Cat is nervous about visiting a creepy haunted house. He’s worried it will be too scary. Splat’s friend Spike tells Splat not to be a scaredy-cat—the haunted house is just for fun! Kids will love this lift-the-flap book (I know my kids lived for them!).
10 Trick-or-Treaters by Janet Schulman (Author), Linda Davick (Illustrator)
10 trick-or-treaters is a cute not-so-scary Halloween counting book with bright, bold artwork and fun rhythms:
10 trick-or-treaters
on a dark and spooky night
out to get some candy
or give someone a fright.
I Spy Spooky Night: A Book of Picture Riddles by Jean Marzollo (Author), Walter Wick (Illustrator)
My kids lived for “I Spy” books, and frankly I enjoyed an occasional break from reading out loud. This “I Spy” book takes children through a spooky old house at night where they search for spooky items like bats and lizards and owls.
Franklin’s Halloween Paperback by Paulette Bourgeois (Author), Brenda Clark (Illustrator)
Perhaps because our last name is Franklin, and perhaps because Franklin was one of my kids’ favorite characters, we had a huge collection of Franklin books (you know…the kind that you know backwards and forwards because you’ve read them so often). We love Franklin’s experience at his Halloween party, where he thinks there might be a real ghost (spoiler: there isn’t a ghost, and Franklin realizes what’s really going on…).
The Berenstain Bears and the Spooky Old Tree by Stan Berenstain and Jan Berenstain
Three brave little bears explore the inside of a mysterious old tree and go into, up, through, over, down, and out. We just love the Berenstain Bears books, so I thought they deserved an extra spot on the list!

I love an excuse to make sweet treats. And Halloween is such a perfect time for making all sorts of treats.
This past weekend, I made this Halloween candied popcorn just for fun. It happened to be our elementary school’s annual back to school picnic and fun run, so I brought it along as our picnic dessert.
My husband and I sat on our picnic blanket, snacking on our candied popcorn, while our youngest son ran a mile and a half with the rest of the elementary school kids. It was good. My boys agreed (although, to his credit, AJ said that it wasn’t exactly good for him, but he was ok with eating it because he needed to replace some calories after his run. Oy! Kids!). Ok, so maybe it isn’t the healthiest way to eat popcorn, but sometimes a sweet treat is ok…right?
Ready for the recipe?
Ingredients
Instructions
It’s so easy! I wanted to try to make a candied popcorn without using corn syrup (it’s not like this is healthy, or anything, but still….) and I was so pleased with how easy it was to make and how well the flavors went together. This would be perfect for a Halloween party!
Here are the quick visual directions:
Spread popped popcorn on a lined cookie sheet (I used my kettle corn recipe).

Melt white chocolate and peanut butter over low heat and drizzle over popcorn.
Sprinkle candies over the popcorn (they will stick to the melted chocolate as it cools).
Enjoy!
You may just end up licking your fingers…
