Are your kids into STEM education? What are some of their favorite STEM activities? How would you like to give the gift of education to your child this holiday season? From December 1st through December 21st visit Sylvan’s Facebook page to enter to win your own STEM-themed educational holiday stocking!

The weather has turned cold for good, the kids are well-established in the not-so-new-anymore school year, the holiday cards are ordered, and it is officially time to get the holiday shopping done. As my kids have gotten older, finding the “perfect” gift to put under the tree has become more and more difficult.

I used to be the cool mom that knew what to get my kid and now I feel like a fish out of water, trying to figure out what that perfect gift might be. The last thing I want to do is waste money buying them gifts that will be forgotten in two days. And although I know that they could all use new socks and underwear, I don’t think they’d be too thrilled to open those gifts on Christmas morning. Luckily, I did a little brainstorming and I have some ideas for filling their stockings this year that I’m so excited about, and I know they will be, too.

Give the Gift of STEM This Holiday - stocking stuffer ideas for kids who love science, technology, engineering and math!

My kids are all about hands-on activities. I love seeing my kids excited about learning (especially when they don’t even realize they’re learning because they’re having so much fun). Whenever I can incorporate learning and fun together, I’m on it. We’ve always been a STEM family (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), but even more so as they get older.

Getting a STEM education is something that is becoming more important in today’s educational system, especially as we consider how prepared our kids will be for the future job market. STEM classes and activities help them master critical skills for their future careers.

American kids are already behind their peers from other countries when it comes to STEM proficiency, and the earlier they get involved in and excited about STEM, the better.

Give the Gift of STEM This Holiday - stocking stuffer ideas for kids who love science, technology, engineering and math!

Luckily, we’ve discovered STEM programs available through Sylvan Learning that encourage kids to “find their edge” and experience how STEM learning can be fun. I’ve always believed that the first step in creating confident, life-long learners is to help them feel confident and recognize that learning can be enjoyable as well as rewarding. The latest Sylvan EDGE STEM classes – focused on robotics, engineering, coding, and math – do just that. Best of all, they’re fun!

Give the Gift of STEM This Holiday - stocking stuffer ideas for kids who love science, technology, engineering and math!

That’s why I’ve decided that the perfect holiday gifts for my kids this year includes fun, hands-on STEM-related toys or activities and an EDGE course certificate for a Sylvan EDGE program of their choice. The courses are six weeks long and I’m sure my kids will have a great experience!

Give the Gift of STEM This Holiday - stocking stuffer ideas for kids who love science, technology, engineering and math!

Here are a few stocking-stuffer ideas that will go perfectly with a Sylvan Learning EDGE course:

  • Insta-Snow Powder: This stuff is so cool! You literally get to experiment with snow. There are tons of activity suggestions. I can’t wait to watch this stuff expand (it expands up to 100 times its original volume). I think we might need to save a little snow to wow their friends next summer!
  • Solar Robot – Grasshopper: My son loves robotics, and he was drawn to the solar robot grasshopper. He carefully read the instructions and was able to put it together by himself.
  • Water Vanish: This is one of my favorites. It’s simply science, but it’s also magic. My wanna-be magicians love tricks that can be explained with science but still look like magic.
  • Energy Stick™: Exploring electricity and circuits is fascinating, and my kids had lots of fun seeing how they could complete a circuit. I love seeing my kids working together to test ideas out and make discoveries about how things work.

Give the Gift of STEM This Holiday - stocking stuffer ideas for kids who love science, technology, engineering and math!

Instead of spending money on things my kids will just forget about, I’m excited to invest in their future with STEM activities like Sylvan EDGE and learning toys that will keep my kids active and growing.

This post is sponsored by SmartyPants, but all thoughts and opinions about the product are my own.

As a parent, you want the best for your kids. You pack a healthy lunch for them every day. You encourage them to be active, explore, and have fun. You support them in their education and help them understand their homework.

So it just makes sense to support their gut health, too.

SmartyPants Kids Probiotic Complete gummy vitamin supplement: Prebiotic | Probiotic | Immunity

What are probiotics, and why are they important?

Your body is full of bacteria – both good and bad. Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts – the good or helpful kind – that help to keep your gut healthy. Probiotics can help balance the good and bad bacterias in your body so that your body works the way it should. Probiotics are especially helpful after taking antibiotics to restore the balance of bacteria within the body, but they are beneficial to take as a supplement regularly, regardless of sicknesses or medications.

Here’s something I’ve learned in my nearly 20 years as a mom: as much as I want my kids to eat well, sleep enough, and take their vitamins and supplements, and no matter how good I know something is for my kids, if it’s something they don’t enjoy, it will be a constant fight for me to get them to do whatever it is I want them to do.

SmartyPants Kids Probiotic Complete gummy vitamin supplement: Prebiotic | Probiotic | Immunity

This past month, we’ve been taking SmartyPants Kids Probiotic Complete Strawberry Creme (also available: SmartyPants Kids Probiotic Complete Grape). They taste SO GOOD that I’ve found myself wanting to take them, too, and there’s literally no complaints when I remind the kids to take their SmartyPants. Luckily, SmartyPants has a line of probiotics for adults (available in blueberry and lemon creme!) so I’m totally covered.

SmartyPants probiotcs are sweet (with no artificial sweeteners or high fructose corn syrup, of course), incredibly soft (think melt-in-your-mouth!) and they are allergy-friendly. My kids are hooked on the taste, even if they don’t understand the overall health value of why they’re taking them. That’s ok, though. That’s why I’m here.

SmartyPants Kids Probiotic Complete gummy vitamin supplement: Prebiotic | Probiotic | Immunity

I know you (and your kids) are going to love them, too! Here are a few reasons why SmartyPants Kids Probiotics are so amazing for your family’s gut health:

What SmartyPants is NOT:

• No Synthetic Colors
• No Artificial Sweeteners
• No Artificial Flavors
• No Artificial Preservatives
• No High Fructose Corn Syrup
• No GMOs
• No Gluten
• No Tree Nuts
• No Peanuts
• No Dairy

What SmartyPants IS:

In each serving of SmartyPants Kids Probiotic you’ll appreciate:

• 4 billion CFUs (that’s 4x more CFUs than the leading gummy probiotics per serving. The SmartyPants Adult & Kids Probiotic Complete products offer 7x more CFUs!)
• Probiotic strains DE111® and IS2*
• Proven 99% survivability in stomach acid
• Promotes good gut bacteria and digestive health*
• Contains clinically-proven Wellmune® prebiotic immune support*
• Vegetarian and Non-GMO
• Each batch is 3rd party lab tested for purity and potency.

And here’s more technical stuff that makes me love SmartyPants even more:

Natural microencapsulation ensures that 99% of SmartyPants probiotics reach all the way to your large intestine alive, where they can flourish, multiply, and help you and your kids thrive. They specifically chose to include Bacillus subtilis DE111® and Bacillus coagulansIS2 because they are two of the most researched strains available.

Their multi-strain probiotics are reinforced by Wellmune®, 3rd party pre-biotic fiber that strengthens your immune system, and acts as an ideal food to feed the probiotic bacteria in SmartyPants Probiotic Complete products. Wellmune® does not artificially stimulate the immune system, or put immune cells into overdrive, it just prepares them to be ready for a challenge.

SmartyPants multi-strain probiotics are in spore form — the form of probiotics that can survive the test of time, changing temperature, and harsh stomach acid.

SmartyPants Kids Probiotic Complete gummy vitamin supplement: Prebiotic | Probiotic | Immunity

Bringing more health to more people: for every bottle sold, SmartyPants makes a one-for-one nutrient grant to Vitamin Angels. Each grant provides a child in need with life changing vitamin A supplementation for one year. So far, they’ve helped over 2 million children, and they’re hoping to make 10 million grants by 2018!

How cool is that?

4th of July Scavenger Hunt for Kids from Food Fun Family

  • Single-player game: race against the clock! See how many of the items on the list you can find in 5, 10, or 15 minutes. Look in the house for as many items as possible, or find things that aren’t at home in a magazine or book.
  • Group scavenger hunt: If you have enough players, divide into 2 teams. Each team works together to find the items on the list. Reconvene at a specific time to compare what each team was able to find.
  • Get creative! Some items are easier than others to “collect” as participants search for things on the list. Let the kids think of alternative methods of “collection” such as taking a picture, drawing a picture, or having an adult initial next to an item on the list. See ideas for gathering clues below.
  • Broaden your search area. With parental permission/supervision, teams can ask neighbors for help gathering scavenger hunt items. Maybe you don’t have a cupid at home, but a neighbor does. Make sure that kids know to only go to houses where they know the people that live there, and always bring a buddy along.

Methods of gathering “clues:”

  • Each person or group has a small bag and collects as many items inside the bag as the can in a set amount of time. At the end, everyone shows off the item they’ve collected.
  • Each person or group has a digital camera (phones, ipod, etc) and snaps a picture of each item they find.
  • Simply check off each item on the scavenger hunt paper as it is found or have another person act as a “witness” and initial the paper to verify that an item was found.
  • Use your imagination! Let the players decide the rules!

Curious George was a staple in my house when I was growing up and so it was natural to “welcome him” back into my home when my kids were little. We have loved the new generation of Curious George episodes, and we are so excited that all 9 seasons of Curious George are streaming exclusively on Hulu.

Curious George is an animated series based on the popular books by Margret and H.A. Rey. Aimed at preschool viewers (ages three to five), the goal of the series is to inspire children to explore science, engineering, and math in the world around them. What parent doesn’t want their child to feel special? As a parent, you go day by day trying to make your child feel special in small ways. Sometimes it can feel as though life is just busy and there’s no time to do this. However, don’t be fooled, there’s always time to make your child feel special. If you’re looking for some awesome ideas, check out these tips. The LAST TIP is seriously the best one!

How to Help Your Child Feel Special

One-on-One time– I’m not sure anything can make a child feel more special than spending one on one time with them. This proves the point that it’s not about how much time you spend with someone, but the quality is what matters most. There are no special rules when it comes to spending one on one time with your children, it’s just a matter of making it happen.

Write a note– One thing that a lot of children find special is when they find a note in their lunchbox. You don’t even need to put a note in their lunchbox as there are tons of opportunities to write notes for your kids. If your child can read, then this is a major way to make your child feel special. Write a little note on the mirror in the bathroom, leave a note in their room, or even mail it to them. Kids love getting mail, especially when it’s from mom or dad.

Tell your child they are special– Sometimes actions just cannot simply outdo words. Telling your child that they are special is really important. Believe it or not, some kids may need to hear “they are special” every day!

Allow your child to express themselves– There is no doubt that every child has their own special talents. Which is why allowing your child to express themselves is important. You never want your child to suppress their creativity. Look for ways in which you can help your child to express themselves, which in return will help them to feel special.

Let your child make decisions for themselves– There comes a point when your child will need to make choices for themselves, this makes them feel so incredibly special. Do you remember when you were first allowed to have those freedoms? Kids need to be able to do somethings for themselves. This will help them feel incredibly special.

Let your child do something special for someone else– This tip is an important one. In order for your child to appreciate everything you do for them, you’ll want to let your child do something special for someone else. That might mean writing a letter to someone, it could mean making a special treat for a neighbor, or even helping a sibling with something. Let them help decide how they will make someone else feel special.

Making your child feel special is never about you, it’s about them. Kids need to feel love, accepted, wanted, and special. Feeling these emotions helps them to grow into adults with feelings.

It’s a new year and that means (among many other things!) a whole new batch of Entertainment Hop posts. Last year, I offered an almost-monthly list of children’s picture books for each of the holidays. As I brainstormed what I could do for this year’s Entertainment Hop party, I knew that I wanted to come up with a year-long idea that I could do for each theme. I was so thrilled when I thought of making monthly scavenger hunt printables for kids.

Check out my list of Valentine’s Day picture books for kids AND my list of 15 good, clean romance novels for adults!

How to use this Valentine’s Day Scavenger Hunt Printable

Look around in the weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day, and you’ll likely see a ton of red and pink, lace, hearts, cupids, and more. Why not make the holiday season into a fun scavenger hunt?

Nothing keeps little ones busy and works on fine motor development like playdough. Make your own, add some delicious holiday scent and a little sparkle to really put it over the top with your kids! Peppermint adds a fresh new aspect to homemade playdough and involves yet another of your child’s senses in on the fun. Set out playdough with rollers, cookie cutters, craft sticks, stamps, etc. to make the fun last even longer and open up their creativity. This would be perfect for winter themed parties, Frozen play time, or anytime for scented play. Note: affiliate links used within this post.

A few weeks ago, when I was making (and then pinning) my Dirt Pudding recipe, I noticed a bunch of recipes for “sand pudding” kept popping up. I was introduced to dirt pudding in it’s many varieties as a teenager, but I had never heard of sand pudding.

My curiosity got the best of me and I clicked a few of the pins to see what this was all about. It seemed that, unlike dirt pudding, which is almost always a combination of Oreo cookies, chocolate pudding, Cool Whip, and gummy worms, sand pudding is not simply it’s vanilla counterpart.

Sand Pudding Recipe - Vanilla Oreos and vanilla pudding with a beach twist!

I decided to make a version that took ideas from several of the ideas from the pins I found (like this one and this one and this one) and make it my own. My kids and I had a blast creating something not only yummy, but fun, too.

You are going to LOVE this recipe! Whether you’re making it for a summer party for a crowd or an afternoon snack just for the family, this is a treat that you do not want to miss!
