It’s spring, which means that most of us have long forgotten New Year’s Resolutions to eat better and get in shape…but as the summer approaches and we start thinking about days spent at the pool or the beach with the kids (in swimming suits. Gasp!) some of us may be thinking about hitting the gym again.
I know one of the things that often holds me and other seasoned moms back from getting a gym membership is the fear of discomfort or embarrassment. (Note: by “Seasoned moms,” I mean middle aged women with a few kids and a decent leftover baby pooch).
I admit I’ve been one to think twice about heading to the gym because I very obviously NEED it (as compared to the women who are totally in shape and don’t look like they need it quite as much as I do). That’s why Planet Fitness is such a good fit for me. Each Planet Fitness gym is a Judgment Free Zone® – that means the gym is non-intimidating, hassle-free, and welcoming. Planet Fitness caters to “everyday people” – like the first timers or the every-once-in-a-while gym goers, rather than just the fitness fanatics and body builders.
Well, luckily for me (and moms like me), Planet Fitness is having a new membership sale starting today! Between May 1 and 12, new members can join any Planet Fitness location for just $5 down and then $10 a month with no commitment. That includes access to the Planet Fitness club near you, but also unlimited access to small-group fitness training.
Planet Fitness also provides members access to an online community called “Planet of Triumphs,” where members can celebrate accomplishments and share inspirational stories, encourage and support each other.
There are more than 1,300 locations all over the country, many of them staffed and open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so there’s probably a club near you. To find the nearest Planet Fitness location, check out: https://planetfitness.com/local-clubs.
Brian Zehetner, Director of Health & Fitness at Planet Fitness shared a few fitness tips for seasoned or more mature moms such as myself, and I’ve included a few of my own.
· Using the stationary bike and elliptical put less stress on the joints, making them a better option for cardio workouts.
· It’s important to remember to do weight-bearing exercises to combat osteopenia, osteoporosis (bone loss), and sarcopenia (muscle loss) as we age.
· The older we get, the longer it takes to recover between exercise sessions, so pace yourself and don’t take on too much at once.
· Focus on functional exercises which increase mobility, stability, and balance (which then reduce the risk of falls and injuries later on).
· Don’t forget to stay hydrated. Not only do I bring a water bottle to the gym, but I start off my workouts with plenty of water in my system.
· Exercising consistently is often more important than what you’re doing at the gym…but that doesn’t mean that you should skip the gym again simply because you’ve missed your last few workouts. Focus on the forward progress, not the past challenges.
· Accountability partners help so much in keeping your commitments to going to the gym. If you can, grab a friend to head to the gym with you. Even if you go alone, have a “virtual” partner that you tell about your successes.
What exercise tips would you add?

]]>I can’t believe that it’s almost time for another Mother’s Day – one of my favorite days of the year! I can usually count on being pampered and feeling appreciated on Mother’s Day, which is probably why I love the day so much. I also love receiving homemade gifts and crafts that my kids have made for me for Mother’s Day. In fact, I still have a couple of the crafts that my kids have made over the years hanging in my bedroom because I love them and the memories of when they made them so much!
I came up with the idea for this thumbprint tree from similar projects that I have seen over the years on the internet. While it is not a completely original idea, I thought it turned out quite nicely for a quick DIY gift for a mom or grandma. I’m obsessed with using blank white canvases to make DIY wall hangings and gifts. There’s just so much you can do with a blank canvas!
Because my kids are teenagers, I had them help me make this Mother’s Day craft. I was pleased that it was easy enough for just about any age kids to be involved in (with some parental supervision) but that it turned out nice enough to display or give as a gift.
Want to see how easy this thumbprint tree was to make?
Supplies Needed:
Instructions:
1 – Sketch a tree to cover the majority of the canvas. You can make your tree look however you’d like, but make sure you include lots of branches. I had my 16-year-old son sketch our tree, because I know he’s good at that kind of drawing.
2 – Squeeze a small amount of paint onto a paper plate.
3 – Dip a finger into the paint and blot on the plate or paper towel until there is just a small amount of paint left on your finger.
4 – Make several finger prints on the branches of the tree and some at the base of the tree, if desired.
5 – Tip: we used a different color paint for each of the kids in our family. The kids each used “their” color to cover the tree with lots of “leaves.”
6 – Allow the paint to dry and then display on the wall or wrap it up as a gift!

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Hallmark Jewelry for IZEA. All opinions are 100% mine.
This past month has been full of emotions. Just a week ago, I watched my daughter marry her sweetheart. It was a wonderful experience, and definitely one of the highlights of being a mom so far. But perhaps even more special than that moment for me was the chance that I had to spend two weeks with my now-adult daughter and my mom.
I remember how my relationship with my mom changed after I got married. The change was unexpected for me, and I love looking back now and seeing how our relationship evolved from parent-child to close friends.
I’m convinced that there is an aspect of the parent-child relationship that blooms after the marriage of the child. I can’t wait to see how my relationship with my oldest evolves now that she is married.
Does every woman feel like they can never measure up to their own mom? Being a mom is a tough job, and I don’t know if kids will ever appreciate everything their moms do for them until years later. I always appreciated my mom, but when I became a mother myself I understood all that went in to being a mom.
I wanted to do something special for my mom this Mother’s Day, since she helped and supported me so much this past month as I got ready for Kim’s wedding.
Going to the Hallmark store and browsing their selection of Mother’s Day cards is one of my favorite things. I laugh and then I get teary and I find lots of cards that I like….and then when I find the perfect card, the one that was written for US, I always know it instantly. This is the card that spoke to me this year:
“There was a time when I thought of you as just my mom, but eventually I started to realize that you’re not only a good parent, you’re a really good person, too….”
The card and the sentiment it holds pairs perfectly with the Tree of Life Necklace from Hallmark Jewelry. It’s a gorgeous piece of jewelry that I would be proud to either wear OR gift to my mom.
Each piece of Hallmark jewelry comes in custom gift packaging from Hallmark, which includes a box, cloth jewelry pouch and an enclosure card that says “Love begins with family.”
Are you still looking for the perfect Mother’s Day gift? It’s not too late to shop for gorgeous Hallmark Jewelry at Amazon.com. Did you know that Hallmark not only has the perfect cards for Mother’s Day and ALL of your special occasions, but they have beautiful jewelry that is perfect for gifting? I love that you can buy their pieces on Amazon, too (one of my favorite place to shop!).
Our lives our filled with love stories. Every love story is made of moments to treasure—little steps, lifelong promises, meaningful experiences, and unforgettable celebrations. Hallmark Jewelry was created to help turn those moments into memories that last forever. This Mother’s Day, give a heartfelt piece of jewelry that is crafted in quality materials and carries a sentimental message to the mother figure in your life.

]]>This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Groupon for IZEA. All opinions are 100% mine.
Mother’s Day is fast approaching, which means that mothers everywhere need to start hinting at what’s on their wish list…
I mean children and husbands everywhere need to start shopping for the perfect gift for mom (before she even asks!)….because that’s how it should work EVERY year!
I admit…as much as I love getting a great gift from my kids and my husband on Mother’s Day, I often don’t have anything in particular that I want or need. But I’m sure that moms can all agree that there’s nothing worse than being forgotten or under-appreciated on Mother’s Day.
To make sure that Mom feels remembered, appreciated and loved this Mother’s Day, I’ve skimmed through Groupon’s Mother’s Day Gift Shop to find 5 perfect gifts to give mom this Mother’s Day. And since they are all such amazing deals AND they can be purchased with a click of a button online, there are NO excuses for any family members to drop the ball this year.
Family, are you listening?
Did you realize that Groupon had such an incredible Groupon’s Mother’s Day Gift Shop? I’ve bought event tickets, experiences, and fun and useful products on Groupon before, but I was LOVING the selection that they had for the Mother’s Day Campaign. I mean, it was as if someone had put together a Mother’s Day gift guide just for me.
They’ve got everything from spa treatments (including nails and facials and more), local experiences, personalized jewelry and other gifts, photo-related gifts (like photo books, which are probably my favorite things to gift!), edible gifts, and more.

Personalized jewelry – What could be more perfect for mom this Mother’s Day than personalized jewelry? You combine two iconic gifts for moms: jewelry and personalized gifts. I love the personalized necklace that I have with the kids’ initials stamped on teeny little “dog tags.” Personalized gifts of any sort will help Mom remember the recipient whenever she uses or sees the gift. Bonus!

Custom Treats – I love chocolate. Hopefully my family’s making note (as if they didn’t know that already). But I love even more when my desserts are in a beautifully arranged “package.” Just think of this as the next step above a bouquet of flowers.

Spa Day – If you or your mom are anything like me, then you’ve probably got a sore back pretty much every day. Maybe, like me, you’re holding in a little too much stress. I know that I love receiving spa packages!

Photo Books – One of my favorite gifts to GIVE is a photo book full of pictures, stories, and memories. Photo books take a little time prepare, so don’t forget to leave a little bit of time before Mother’s Day to be completely prepared.

The gift of Experience – If mom doesn’t NEED anything right now, then give her the gift of EXPERIENCES. Groupon’s Mother’s Day page has hundreds of fabulous experience-based deals (like dinner cruises, concerts, and high-adventure outings like sky-diving), so check the shop to find the perfect experience opportunities waiting!
One lucky mom to win a one-year’s worth of Spa Days on Groupon (in the form of $1,200 in Groupon Bucks, which they – or their mom – can use to experience the joys of free spa days for an entire year. Can you imagine the excitement if you won a YEAR’S worth of spa days? Imagine how relaxed you’d be at the end of the year. To find out more, check out the Mother’s Day $0 Deal for 1 Year’s Worth of Spa Days on Groupon.
Another lucky mom will win one of two NEW Apple watches in the Mother’s Day $0 Deal for Groupon’s Apple Watches Giveaway
Groupon will also be sharing some amazing promo code discount offers during the Mother’s Day shopping span, so expect even greater deals to come on the site!
Sometimes moms have to watch out for themselves a little…and it’s totally acceptable for moms to get a few of those wish-list items for herself (just in case, of course!).
What would YOU buy yourself from the Groupon’s Mother’s Day Gift Shop?
Groupon is a global leader of local commerce, offering consumers a vast marketplace of unbeatable deals all over the world. Shoppers discover the best a city has to offer on the web or on mobile with Groupon Local, enjoy vacations with Groupon Getaways, and find a curated selection of electronics, fashion, home furnishings and more with Groupon Goods. And now there’s the Groupon’s Mother’s Day Gift Shop, which will feature numerous ideas for perfect gifts and amazing experiences that will please any mom! Every mom deserves a special treat on Mother’s Day and Groupon is the answer that is both easy for the giftee and pleasing for the receiver!

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of MetLife Foundation. All opinions are 100% mine.
My mom is pretty amazing. We had a close relationship growing up but it was after I became a mother myself 17 and a half years ago that my love and respect for her quadrupled.

I may be a seasoned mom now, but I’ll always be a daughter…and I will always look to my mom for advice and support because I still have so much to learn!
I struggle each Mother’s Day to know how to say thank you and I love you best. I am horrible about remembering to mail a card and we’re too far away from each other to be able to head out for a Mother’s Day lunch together.
This year, I’m saying I love you with a Moem.
A “Moem” is a poem (preferably rhyming) written to pay tribute to moms and grandmas and women who have influenced us as we celebrate Mother’s Day…and then posted on social channels in 135 characters or less.

Here are a couple examples (probably better than mine!):
Of all the special joys in life, the big ones and the small. Spending today with my Mom, is the greatest of them all. #moem
I forget around this time, almost every year, I owe it to her to say thank you, to my beautiful Mother dear. #moem
Here's mine:

Not poetic? No worries!
The Moem Maker www.moemmaker.com can get you started. They have a bunch of beginnings that you can choose from, then they’ve got suggested rhyming words to get your poetic juices flowing.

When your moem is ready, share your tribute to Mom on social media (Facebook or Twitter) with the hashtag #moem.
For every #moem written and shared with the hashtag this Mother’s Day, MetLife will donate $10 toward Dress for Success Worldwide – with a goal of $50,000.
Dress for Success helps low-income women achieve economic independence for themselves and their families through supporting their search for professional employment. Hurry, though – while you can create a #Moem anytime, the Dress for Success Mother's Day donation ends at Midnight on Mother's Day.
What would you say in your Mother’s Day tribute to your mom?
Are you ready for the challenge? Use the Moem Maker to make a Moem and then share it on your social channels. Feel free to tag me (@1momof5) so that I can read your Moem, too! Remember – each tribute shared by the end of Mother’s Day will result in a $10 donation to make a better life for women in need. It’s like two Mother’s Day gifts in one.

This post brought to you by New York Life. All opinions are 100% mine.
What does it mean to Keep Good Going? It means exactly what it sounds like – it’s about paying it forward, about passing on the good things that positively affect you and your family and positively shaping the lives of others.
“The Happiest Daughter” video tells the story of one little girl who has a fantasticly happy attitude despite her challenges. In the same breath, it tells the story of how all of us experience unexpected challenges. The important thing is making the most of whatever life throws at us.
I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase “Make lemonade out of lemons.” There have been many times that I have felt like my life was all lemons. Sometimes it’s easy to focus on the negative, the challenges, the shortcomings.

My secret in having a good attitude and making the most of what life has thrown at me has been to focus on the lemonade. Honestly, my experience blogging for the last 6+ years has been one of the things that has reminded me, time and again, that life is full of lemonade.
My mom was a great example of focusing on the blessings, especially considering the circumstances that she had to deal with as a young mother. But instead of dwelling on her challenges, she provided a happy, secure, and FULL life for me and my siblings that followed. My mom chose to Keep Good Going.
New York Life has created a digital billboard to keep good going – to capture the real-time moments of families across the country (especially as we approach Mother’s Day this weekend!). You can join the positivity by sharing your own mom-related photos and the words of wisdom that your mom passed on to you.
How have you kept good going? What nuggets of wisdom has your mom taught you – in your childhood or since you’ve been a parent yourself? I’d love to hear!

]]>I don’t have many (high) expectations for Mother’s Day. As long as I can get a nap (the height of luxury) and, if possible, avoid cooking all day, then I can end the day relatively satisfied.
Why is it, then, that I come to the end of most Mother’s Days feeling like a horrible, unappreciated mom?
Yesterday was going fairly well…It started with a dozen roses on Saturday night, and then I was ordered to stay in bed after my alarm went off while my husband and youngest son conspired to cook me a “surprise” breakfast (AJ was sorely disappointed when he discovered that Daddy had let the surprise slip when he asked me what I’d like for breakfast).
I had requested my no-fail waffles, but didn’t realize before hand that CandyMan had never made the batter. He made two fatal mistakes: he used only all purpose flour instead of mostly wheat and he added extra milk because the batter was too “thick.” They weren’t horrible, but they weren’t “my” waffles. The good part, though? I had a sit-down, hot breakfast with my whole family.
I opened my one (non-roses) present – candy (I really have to remember to tell them which candies I want next year!) – and tried not to dwell on the fact that only one of my five children bothered to do anything for Mother’s Day. Apparently, they’re all too old for making cute cards with hand prints on them.
Church went well, especially towards the end when the men took over all of the classes and gave all of the women 20 minutes to sit, chat, and enjoy cheesecake. We drove home and I got ready for my nap.
I hadn’t fallen asleep yet when AJ came up to the bedroom, climbed up to snuggle with me, and ended up staying for some one-on-one time. I was happy to have him. We made some last plans for his upcoming baptism and then he asked to play a game on my iPad.
“No, not right now,” I said, calmly.
“Yes! I want to play that game. You’re mean if you don’t let me play!”
Wow, that escalated quickly. But I stuck with my first answer. “No, I’m going to try to take my nap now. Why don’t you go downstairs and read.”
“I HATE you, Mommy! I hate you!”
I’ve been a mother for enough years that this phrase tends to make me roll my eyes rather than run to the other room crying. Yesterday, AJ got the eye roll…but I was instantly done with him interrupting my nap time.
Unfortunately, he wasn’t done.
“I hate you, Mommy,” he said as he grabbed a dollar bill off the desk and started scrunching it up in his hands. The money made my blood boil a bit and I hopped out of bed to stop him. He saw me coming and scooted quickly to his room, where he barricaded himself behind his door. I got the door open and demanded that he give me the dollar. Whining and yelling at me, he finally showed me where he had thrown it. I picked the dollar up about the same time that he picked up the basket full of clean, folded socks. Holding it high over his head, he threatened to dump it out.
At this point, all I could think about was how quiet the house was. Why in the world was no one coming to Mom’s rescue on Mother’s Day?
The socks did, indeed, get dumped. I grabbed him from his bed, where he had fled this time, and ordered him to pick them up. He refused and instead laid another big one on me:
“Why are you being so MEAN on Mother’s Day?”
I shot back with, “Shouldn’t I be the one asking that question?”
I gave up. I tried going to sleep, but my heart was pounding too fast for sleep to come, so I ended up reading a book instead. 10 minutes later, I walked downstairs, where I found AJ looking out the front window, waiting for Dad to come back from a Mother’s Day flower delivery to some other local moms.
Being a Mom is hard work. I love that we have a day to celebrate the moms in our lives, and I certainly love my own mom (and mother in law – I’ve been blessed). But I think Mother’s Day is too much pressure. I’m kind of glad I don’t have to go through Mother’s Day for another year.

]]>My husband wrote this “poem” last night as he prepared to speak at church on Mother’s Day. He was surprised that so many women approached him and said that his poem really touched them. I was not so surprised.
I think each of us can find ourselves in this list. I think it’s particularly interesting that he would write this knowing nothing of all of the “Mom Enough” talk happening last week all over the internet.
Some are short and some are tall.
Some are thin and some are not so thin.

]]>Since I woke up sick this morning (yes, sick on Mother’s Day!), I am taking the easy route and re-posting some of my favorite quotes about Mothers. I couldn’t let this day go by without expressing my love and appreciation for my own mother. She is the best!
The sweetest sounds to mortals given
Are heard in Mother, Home, and Heaven.

All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel Mother. ~Abraham Lincoln
Being a full-time mother is one of the highest salaried jobs in my field, since the payment is pure love. ~Mildred B. Vermont
The phrase “working mother” is redundant. ~Jane Sellman
If evolution really works, how come mothers only have two hands? ~Milton Berle
Women’s Liberation is just a lot of foolishness. It’s the men who are discriminated against. They can’t bear children. And no one’s likely to do anything about that. ~Golda Meir

All women become like their mothers. That is their tragedy. No man does. That’s his. ~Oscar Wilde, The Importance of Being Earnest, 1895
