I can’t believe that it’s almost time for another Mother’s Day – one of my favorite days of the year! I can usually count on being pampered and feeling appreciated on Mother’s Day, which is probably why I love the day so much. I also love receiving homemade gifts and crafts that my kids have made for me for Mother’s Day. In fact, I still have a couple of the crafts that my kids have made over the years hanging in my bedroom because I love them and the memories of when they made them so much!

DIY Thumbprint tree canvas craft for Mother's Day from Food Fun Family

I came up with the idea for this thumbprint tree from similar projects that I have seen over the years on the internet. While it is not a completely original idea, I thought it turned out quite nicely for a quick DIY gift for a mom or grandma. I’m obsessed with using blank white canvases to make DIY wall hangings and gifts. There’s just so much you can do with a blank canvas!

Because my kids are teenagers, I had them help me make this Mother’s Day craft. I was pleased that it was easy enough for just about any age kids to be involved in (with some parental supervision) but that it turned out nice enough to display or give as a gift.

Want to see how easy this thumbprint tree was to make?

Supplies Needed:

  • 1 Blank white canvas (I used an 8×10 inch canvas, but you could use any size)
  • Variety of acrylic paints
  • Paper plate (optional: thick paper towel for blotting)
  • Pencil

Instructions:

1 – Sketch a tree to cover the majority of the canvas. You can make your tree look however you’d like, but make sure you include lots of branches. I had my 16-year-old son sketch our tree, because I know he’s good at that kind of drawing.

2 – Squeeze a small amount of paint onto a paper plate.

3 – Dip a finger into the paint and blot on the plate or paper towel until there is just a small amount of paint left on your finger.

4 – Make several finger prints on the branches of the tree and some at the base of the tree, if desired.

5 – Tip: we used a different color paint for each of the kids in our family. The kids each used “their” color to cover the tree with lots of “leaves.”
6 – Allow the paint to dry and then display on the wall or wrap it up as a gift!

I had a hard time figuring out a St. Patrick’s Day craft to make this week, but I was determined that I would stick with the challenge! My 17-year-old daughter helped me brainstorm with some supplies I had on hand that I thought *could* be awesome for St. Patrick’s Day (namely a TON of green and clear flat-backed marbles). We came up with a super easy and fun St. Patrick’s Day necklace. I’m loving this St. Patrick’s Day-friendly homemade jewelry! Not only is it festive and green, but it has the added touch of showcasing a cool map of Ireland. I love maps, so this is something I would totally wear (regardless of the time of year!). I love that it’s festive without being overly “shamrocks and leprecauns.”

Directions:

  • Use the marbles to trace circles highlighting some of your favorite places on the map. Cut the circles out (you’ll want to cut on the inside of the line that you’ve traced because they paper should be slightly smaller than the flat end of the marble).

  • Working over a sheet of wax paper, spread a thin layer of Mod Podge over the flat end of each marble and attach the cut out map circles so that the map shows through the marble. Press firmly and “seal” edges of paper by running your finger over the edges. Let the marbles dry face down on the wax paper.

  • Measure a length of suede cord that is slightly longer than you want the necklace to be. Fold the cord in half and make a small mark with pen to designate the middle of the cord. • Place shea butter, coconut oil, and beeswax granules in a small pot over medium low heat. Stir frequently until mixture is completely melted.
  • Remove from heat, and stir in essential oils well.
  • Carefully pour or spoon melted mixture into silicone mold.

I love making my own bath and beauty products, not only for my own benefit, but to give as gifts to friends and family. I use my DIY sugar scrubs every single day in the shower (they are amazing for cleaning and moisturizing my face, and my homemade sugar scrub makes the best shaving “cream” ever!).

DIY Peppermint Bath Bomb Ornaments from Food Fun Family - a fun homemade bath and beauty product that is perfect for Christmas gifts

My youngest son, even though he’s 11 now, still prefers taking baths, and I admit that I do love a nice relaxing bath (especially when I’ve got the house to myself and I can relax and soak for as long as I’d like!). There’s nothing more soothing that a hot bath and a fizzing bath bomb.

This week, I made some peppermint bath bombs, and because they holidays are coming up soon, I decided to form them in some fun and festive clear ball ornaments. Not only do the pop-together ornament balls make an ideal mold for bath bombs, but the ornaments themselves make an adorable gift “package.”

DIY Peppermint Bath Bomb Ornaments from Food Fun Family - a fun homemade bath and beauty product that is perfect for Christmas gifts

If you’ve never made fizzy bath bombs before, here’s what you need to know: when baking soda and citric acid are mixed together and then added to water, a chemical reaction occurs. As the bath bomb dissolves, the reaction between the baking soda, citric acid, and water creates carbon dioxide, which results in lots of bubbles. Those bubbles not only make the water feel fizzy, but they release the soothing scent of the peppermint essential oils into the air, too.

DIY Peppermint Bath Bomb Ornaments from Food Fun Family - a fun homemade bath and beauty product that is perfect for Christmas gifts

Peppermint is not only one of my favorite scents of the holidays, but it is one of my favorite scents year-round. I especially love peppermint essential oils for soothing a headache or helping clear or calm my sinuses, which is a constant problem for me during the winter months. If peppermint is not your thing, or you’d just like to shake things up a bit and make a different scent, you can use any essential oils or leave them out altogether.

Recommended: for an even more festive scent, try Candy Cane essential oil blend, which combines peppermint, lavender, orange, and vanilla. It’s heavenly!

DIY Peppermint Bath Bomb Ornaments

DIY Peppermint Bath Bomb Ornaments

Ingredients

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup citric acid (where to buy)
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 Tbsp almond oil (you can use coconut oil as well)
  • 15 drops peppermint essential oil (where to buy)
  • Spray bottle with water
  • Plastic snap-together ornaments (where to buy)

Instructions

  1. Combine dry ingredients in a small mixing bowl; mix well. Add almond oil and essential and stir. Spray a small amount of water (4-5 squirts) on the surface of the dry mixture. Stir. Keep adding a few quirts and mixing until you have a consistency that sticks together (kind of like moon sand) when you pinch the powder together. You only need to use a small amount of water total (about a half teaspoon or less).
  2. Scoop mixed bath bomb ingredients into both sides of the plastic ornament and pack down. Leave a little extra scooped on top so that when you carefully fit both sides of the ball together, the bath bomb is packed in tightly. The more tightly packed your ingredients are, the better your ornament balls will stay together once you open you bath bomb.
  3. Let bath bombs dry for several hours or overnight before opening. Store bath bombs inside ornaments in a cool, dry place until ready to use.
  4. To use: drop a bath bomb into your hot bath water and enjoy the fizz and the scent!

A couple of helpful notes:

  • Bath bombs will stick together when they’re packed tightly enough together, but be warned: they are VERY delicate! It’s best to store them inside the plastic ornaments until ready to use.
  • You can use half of a bath bomb by carefully sliding the two halves apart and setting one aside to use later. Again, bath bombs tend to be delicate so it’s fairly easy to break them apart at the half mark. Half a bath bomb was plenty for my youngest son.
  • DIY Peppermint Bath Bomb Ornaments from Food Fun Family - a fun homemade bath and beauty product that is perfect for Christmas gifts

  • Peppermint essential oil is a “hot” oil, and I would highly recommend avoiding getting any of the oils in your eyes (and that includes rubbing your eyes with your hand safter soaking them in the bath).
  • Citric acid can be found in the canning section at many grocery stores and Walmart. However, it’s hard to find in stores in the winter. I highly recommend ordering some on Amazon and save yourself a trip around town.

Not only is homemade lip balm super easy to make, it saves you money and contains no artificial flavors, colorings, or preservatives, which means that it is much better for your skin.

DIY cinnamon lip balm recipe

Cinnamon has the benefits of tasting and smelling fantastic (it’s one of my favorite scents and flavors ever!), and it also acts as a natural colorant for your lip balm. Cinnamon oil is known to work as a temporary lip plumper, being a “hot oil” you only want to use it in conjunction with a carrier oil like coconut oil. Coconut oil and Vitamin E condition and restore healthy lips in the hot or cold weather.

While you can make your lip scrub in any flavor or scent, using your favorite essential oils, I like to use cinnamon because it is a “hot” essential oil and irritates the upper layer of your thin lip skin, making them appear fuller and plumper temporarily. Plus, cinnamon is one of my favorite flavors.

While the sugar exfoliates your lips, the coconut oil and Vitamin E heal and moisturize your lips in just a minute of gentle use. I find that my lips are so moisturized afterwards that I don’t even need a lipgloss or chapstick.

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of The Gorilla Glue Company for IZEA. All opinions are 100% mine.

This summer has been hot, hot, hot! So when we’re not at the pool, we’re looking for projects that we can work on inside, where we can stay out of the sun and the heat. This week, a few of my kids and I worked on our very first fairy garden. We’ve seen fairy gardens all over Pinterest, but we’ve never made one ourselves. We are hooked!

We gathered lots of supplies and set up our little fairy workshop on the kitchen table, where we created our own fairy garden over a couple of days. Our best tools for making our fairy garden? A pair of scissors and a bottle of Gorilla Super Glue with TWO ways to dispense. I’ve used Gorilla Glue before, but the Gorilla Super Glue Brush & Nozzle was so easy to use and left virtually no mess. I can’t say the same for the rest of the table!

About Gorilla Super Glue Brush & Nozzle: this new package features a fine bristle brush that offers controlled coverage and the precision tip nozzle for quick, easy dispensing. The brush tip was perfect for gluing sticks together to make the fairy house, and the precision tip nozzle was ideal for larger areas, like attaching pebbles to the mason jar lid pond (so that I could act quickly!).

I love that both methods of applying the Gorilla Glue dried fast and held tight. Gorilla glue is perfect for wood, metal, ceramic (but not anything that would go in a dish washer), rubber, leather, paper and some plastics. The brush is ideal for edge to edge coverage and the nozzle is ideal for precision application. I used both applicators for our fairy garden.

The best thing about making your own fairy garden is that the only limitation is your imagination. You can get supplies and at the store or in your own backyard (we did a little of both). Note: Gorilla glue can be purchased at hardware and home center stores nationwide.

How to make a fairy garden picnic table and chairs:

Supplies Needed:

  • 3-4 flat wood disks (found at craft stores or cut from backyard branches)
  • 2 popsicle sticks, trimmed
  • 1 cocktail umbrella
  • Gorilla Super Glue Brush & Nozzle

Directions:

  1. Trim popsicle sticks for chair backs. Use the brush applicator to apply glue to a wood disk. Hold two trimmed popsicle sticks for a few seconds, until they hold. Repeat for a second chair.
  2. To make the picnic table, make a small hole in the center of the 3rd wood disk with the tip of a knife or scissors. Trim the sharp end off of a cocktail umbrella so that the end is blunt. Using the precision tip applicator, apply a drop of Gorilla glue in the center of the wood disk and hold the blunt end of the umbrella in place for a few seconds until it holds. You can glue a second disk to the bottom of the table to make it taller, if desired.

How to make fairy garden mushrooms:

Use Gorilla glue brush applicator to apply glue to the tip of a wood bead. Attach a large button on top and hold in place until secure. Draw dots on the top of your button to make mushroom spotted.

How to make a fairy house:

Supplies needed:

  • Straight sticks, trimmed to the same length
  • Gorilla glue brush applicator
  • Large silk leaf for roof

Directions:

  1. Tip: make sure that your sticks are fairly straight – they will be much easier to attach together that way. You can also fit them together (like a puzzle) before you get started and lay them out to make your work easier. Sticks can be various widths.
  2. Brush Gorilla glue onto one side of a stick and press & hold another stick next to it until you have created a wall that is your desired size. Each of my walls was about 5 sticks wide.
  3. When you have your 3 walls set, attach the walls together (to make a 3-sided wall) using the brush applicator.
  4. Attach the leaf on top of the house to make a cute, natural roof using the precision tip applicator.

How to make a fairy garden pond:

Supplies needed:

  • Mason jar lid
  • Blue acrylic paint
  • Small stones
  • Gorilla glue precision tip applicator

Directions:

  1. Paint the top of a mason jar lid blue. Let dry.
  2. Using the precision tip of your Gorilla glue, apply a thin line of glue around the edge of the lid and attach pebbles. Do half of the lid at a time so that the glue doesn’t dry before you make it around.
