We’re still in the middle of our family’s summer road trip, so it should come as no surprise that we are big fans of the road trip vacation.
Last year, I traveled to Alabama for the first time, and earlier this month, we drove through Alabama on our road trip across the country. My favorite memory from visiting Alabama was the barbecue. I’ve always been a fan of barbecue, but I was blown away at how good they make it in Alabama. I was so impressed that I brought home a bunch of BBQ sauces and dry rubs so that I could recreate the tastes of Alabama at home.
Creating the Perfect Alabama Road Trip
If your family loves road tripping like we do, here are a just a few Alabama road trips that I can’t wait to take the family on. Alabama has something for just about anyone – the history buff, the sports fan, the girl’s weekend, the romantic couple, and more.
Road Trip For Foodies:
Perhaps the most perfect Alabama road trip is a driving tour of some of Alabama’s BBQ. In Alabama, barbecue is a culture in and of itself. The state is full of some of the nation’s best, award-winning restaurants, where you can get your fingers messy with delicious barbecue. Did you know that Alabama was named as the “Most BBQ Crazed State in the US” in 2014, according to Estately.com?
The Alabama Tourism Department has declared 2015 “The Year of Alabama BBQ.” In fact, Alabama is declaring that their BBQ is not only among the best in the US, but is THE best in the US.

Road Trip For Readers:
Love the classic book “To Kill a Mockingbird”? Have you read Harper Lee’s new release, “Go Set a Watchman”? You’ll love a road trip to Monroeville, Alabama, which is considered the “Literary Capital of Alabama.” Monroeville is the childhood home of Harper Lee, her neighbor and childhood friend, Truman Capote, author of “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and “In Cold Blood,” Mark Childress, author of “Crazy in Alabama,” and other distinguished writers.
On your road trip to Monroeville, you can see their yearly stage production of “To Kill a Mockingbird,” a 22-year-long tradition. Be sure to stroll through the downtown area and see the 25 uniquely handcrafted bird houses. And stop by the many art galleries and quaint shops.
Road Trip For Families:
There’s no better family vacation than a road trip to the beach. Alabama’s 32 miles of sandy seashore are the perfect family road trip destination. There are plenty of beaches off the beaten path that offer seclusion, tranquility, and sugary sand. One of the recommended beaches to put on your list is Gulf State Park, which features the second-longest fishing pier (1,540 feet) along the Gulf of Mexico. Kids under 16 don’t need fishing licenses to fish from the pier. Adults can purchase fishing licenses right on the pier.
Mobile Bay, the fourth-largest estuary in the US, is another gorgeous destination. It is home to dolphins and seabirds as well as two 19th-century forts. Mobile Bay is also home to an aquarium, with hands-on exhibits perfect for kids.
