DIY Star Wars Sensory Bin for Kids

A Star Wars Sensory Bin? Yes! Note: we will not blame you if you end up enjoying this as much as the kids!

Sensory bins are a great way to supplement any themed unit study or simply just for fun. They open up imaginations, extend play, and build up fine motor skills. With a new Star Wars release fresh on the kids minds, I knew that a Star Wars Themed Sensory Bin would be a huge hit! I used mostly items I had on hand already. If you already have Star Wars fans in the house, you will likely need to only pick up one or two items to create a magical box from a galaxy far, far away. Your kids will be busy for hours!

How To Make Your Own Star Wars-Inspired Sensory Bin

Supplies:

• Assorted Star Wars Figurines and small vehicles
• Glow bracelets
• Glow-in-the-dark stars
• 2-3 bags dry black beans
• Spoon
• Smaller containers
• Small tub with 3”-4” sides and lid

Directions:

• You can use any plastic tub with a lid you have on hand.
• Start by adding black beans to the tub; this acts as great filler and gives the impression of space.
• Sprinkle with glow-in-the-dark stars – charge them first by placing them under a light source, a lamp or window.
• Glow bracelets make perfect light sabers and add a bit of fun to your sensory bin.
• Then add in your child’s favorite characters and vehicles.
• I always provide the kids with spoons, and small containers – these are useful for scooping, dumping, pouring, filling, hiding, and more!

How to Use Your Star Wars Sensory Bin

Let their imaginations take over they will know what to do. But in case you want a few specific ideas here are activities to supplement your Star Wars inspired Sensory Bin.

• Play “I Spy” with the contents
• Use items as counters for impromptu math practice
• Provide measuring cups and introduce measurements
• Add books to the bin (like these Star Wars Little Golden Books) and let your child read during play
• Encourage your child to make up a story about the characters
• Remove one item and have your child guess what is missing; great for building memory
• Sensory bins are really fun for kids, building skills during a particular unit study or just plain entertainment for a rainy afternoon
