Summer is No Vacation

I don’t care what everyone else says, Summer time is no vacation. Despite the common reference to Summer being a “break,” Summer time typically turns out to be a fun but tiring time of the year for us. Instead of sleeping in and relaxing on the porch, we tend to get up early every morning and stay busy til the sun goes down (which simply means a later bed time for the kids). Later bed time for the kids doesn’t mean later bed time for Mom. It means that Mom is pooped by the time the kids have settled down and can’t keep her eyes open to get any night-time work done.

I checked my stats the other day and noticed that my blog has been rather quiet, traffic-wise. I figure that everyone else is busy with Summer “Break” just like me. Here are the top ten reasons why I’ve been a really bad blog reader lately:

10. Driving, driving, and more driving. I am really spoiled during the school year. The elementary school is across the street from our house, and the middle school buses the kids to and from school each day. Other than three years of preschool that I did with my older kids, I haven’t had to do the Morning and Afternoon Mommy Taxi. Ever. Now I’m not complaining about having something so great for my kids to do each day…..but the hour of driving/waiting in the pick up line every day does take a chunk out of my schedule.

9. Audio Books. I am hooked. I can do just about anything while listening to an audio book EXCEPT read or write a blog post. Last week, I finished The Help, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

8. The pool. And work. They’re a tough pair, I tell you.

7. Outings. Without a preschooler to lug around, I am enjoying the freedom of getting out of the house, either by myself, with a friend, or with KitKat, who is also home with me.

6. My new, amazing shoes. I love Spring, Summer, and early Fall because I can wear sandals all the time. The only problem? I have a tendency to get plantar fascitis and cysts, causing a good bit of foot pain. Not to mention my varicose veins and ankle swelling. A few weeks ago, I discovered Skechers Tone Ups and since I started wearing them during waking hours, I have nearly eliminated ALL of my foot pain and swelling. They are miracle shoes, and they are motivating me to walk more.

5. My to-do list. It’s never-ending, and something is always more important than reading blogs.

4. I’ve been sewing. Yes, me. I redesigned my new swimming suit to cross in the back instead of tie behind my neck, and I added a triangle of fabric (that I found from a $1.50 swimming suit at the Salvation Army) in the front to cover up a little more of my non-cleavage.

3. The heat. Heat makes me do everything more slowly.

2. My kids. I admit, I do like them a little.

1. Dishes. My dishwasher has been broken for a few weeks and I fear that it will remain in it’s current state indefinitely. Instead of reading blogs, I am spending no less then an hour and a half maintaining the dishes for our family of seven.

What keeps you away from blog reading (or other such luxuries) this time of year?

I completely agree – we just got home from vacation. The rest of our family is still at the beach but we decided we needed a weekend to rest after vacation. I could probably do a whole blog posting about why family vacations are a bad idea but my family reads my blog. No worries…before you know it, summer will be gone and we’ll be wishing we had more time to enjoy the summer.

Summer has definitely slowed me down. I find myself marking all as read in my reader.

I’m finding it hard to want to sit down at my computer after a long day of work (doing it now during my lunch break) while it is still light outside. I used to blog and read in the after the girls went down and it was dark hours. those hours are so much later now, I just have to drag my fanny to bed.

I think even if it wasn’t a “break” all inside stuff gets reduced. It is warm, sunny and beautiful out. Why be inside on a computer?

You are hilarious, I love reading your blog! But I’m totally blog slacking too this summer. Mostly because this baby in my stomach is a pain in the butt…literally….when I am sitting!

I’m retired, my kids are grown and gone, so nothing interferes with my blog time during any season! I love it!

Vacation and planning the next one. Plus my teacher daughter is out of school so it’s her summer break. I see the grands twice a week. Work will pick up for me in August all through the holidays so July is my one fab break. Hope you are well!

Exhaustion. And work. And kids keeping me away from doing my work. I can’t get what a need to do for work done during the day b/c we are at the pool, or the lake, or the movies, or the park, or a farmers’ market, or just somewhere doing something. Then at night, I have to get my one thing done for work before I fall asleep at the computer. School starting will mean relaxation!

We have been on the go since Summer “break” began. I haven’t been able to blog as much as I do during the school year. Having my soon to be kindergarten not in preschool anymore has meant a lot more activities out of the house to keep her entertained.
