I haven’t made a big deal about it yet, but I have mentioned in passing that I am Twizzler’s new Cub Scout Den Leader. I was terrified at first, but now I am so freaking excited!! In just a week and a half I have poured over every book and magazine that was handed down to me from the previous leader. Twizzler and I have worked to get his Bobcat rank (he is really eager to get that badge). I am loving how this new adventure is bringing us together.
I was not loving this, though:
I knew I was going to need to go through the entire Scout closet. I could tell that nothing had been done with it in quite a while.
I started with the essentials: I pulled everything out of the closet, except for the fake fire pit thing on the top shelf (behind Garfield) because I knew that was the only place for that to go, and I really didn’t want to hurt my back any more than it was today.
(Oh yeah–I didn’t mention that I volunteered to help Necco’s Girl Scout troop pick up their Girl Scout Cookie order today. We loaded 3 vans with 170 cases of cookies. That’s cases, not boxes. And then the 3 of us had to unload our vans and stack those 170 cases in a garage. My back is not appreciating it tonight.
Oh–and if you are local, Necco is still taking Girl Scout Cookie orders!!)
So back to the Cub Scout closet….
After clearing everything out, I separated like things into small bins. Scissors in one. Tape and glue in another. Crayons, markers. Goo-gobs of awards. Miscellanious crafty things.
I found old receipts. Lots of old copies. Outdated books and manuals. I trashed a lot. Actually, Twizzler, who was enthralled by the uniform and hat that I found for him, got down and helped me gather the trash.
After organizing the contents of the closet and trying to find a place to put everything back, I was pleasantly surprised with how painless it was. I know where things are now, and I certainly know without a doubt that I will never need to buy napkins, cups, plates, or silverware. (see that big brown box? It was filled to overflowing, and I still had to put an enormous box of utensils on a different shelf) It appears that the last several leaders have bought paper products and never checked to see if there was already a supply in the closet. In fact, I don’t think the closet has really been used much except as a stuff-all storage place.
Ahh! The potential! Seriously, I am so excited!
