I was uninspired this morning (at least in blogging terms) until I saw the spider dangling from a thin web above my bed. When I saw the spider hanging over the place where I had just finished sleeping, I knew what I could write about.
It was MamaKat’s last writer’s workshop prompt that came to my mind when I saw that spider this morning.
NOTE: This is NOT the spider I found this morning. This is a spider I found on a walk last summer. Outside. I don’t think I could ever sleep in my bedroom again if THIS were the spider that was dangling over my covers!
First of all, let me clarify. I am no arachniphobe. I’m not particularly fond of spiders, but I can handle them.
As long as they are not above my head.
When I was little, I started having recurring dreams or hallucinations or some strange occurrence every once in a while when I would just be coming out of sleep. You know they moments after you wake up, but before you open your eyes? In that dark state, I would think that I had opened my eyes and I’d look up above my head and see spiders coming down towards me. I’d wake up frantically swatting my pillow in the air to knock the spiders down. The only way I could convince myself that the spiders were truly not there was to turn on the lights.
These dreams/hallucinations have continued, though not as frequently, into my adulthood. Like I said, I am not terrified of spiders. Except for when they are above my head. Or in my bed.
Like I found this morning. The childhood nightmare come true.
And lately, I’ve been finding bug bites on me. In places that are always covered. Ugh. Bugs in my bed?
That scares me.
