Several years ago on September 3, a little baby girl was born. She was the 3rd daughter born in the family and was followed by another girl and the only son – the perfect middle child.
Her parents named her Anne: Anne with an E like Anne of Green Gables or the royal Anne.
Anne had a happy childhood with parents who taught her to work and cook and sew and be a good friend. She went to church every Sunday.
After she graduated from high school, she worked at her dad’s optometry office and got married to her high school sweetheart a short time later. A few years after that, Anne gave birth to her own little baby girl.
Me.
The rest of her history is filled with raising children – cooking meals, tending gardens, volunteering at schools, teaching at church, sewing dresses for her 4 daughters, shopping, reading aloud, driving, painting, visiting the sick and elderly, brushing and braiding and washing 4 girls’ hair, and all the other things a mother does.
There was never a question in my mind about my mom’s love for me and for each of my sisters and my brother. She loved us. Period. And she still does.
My mom is one of my most treasured friends. And today is her birthday. Although I wasn’t able to spend the day with her today, I spent 8 days with her recently, and her hug is still fresh on my skin.
Sometimes I ache to sit with my mom and let her shoulder some of my pains, like she did when I was a little girl.
And sometimes I wish that I could shoulder some of her aches and pains. But I can’t. I just hope that she knows that I would if I could. And that I love her.
The most wonderful woman was born today. Her name is Anne (don’t forget the E). She’s my mom.
