Halloween is coming, and with the holiday inevitably comes candy. I admit–I’ve got a sweet tooth. And that’s precicely the reason why I try not to have candy in the house.
I would eat it all.
I also don’t love the idea of my kids eating candy all the time. And I know they will. If it’s there, they will eat it. Luckily, the same seems to be true for good foods. I have found that my kids will eat whatever it is we have available. Granted, if I only put out cooked spinach and hot tea, they might chose to starve….but I don’t so they’re ok.
I was happy to find out about a new initiative called Trick or Treat Me. Among their causes is something called the “milk box initiative.” Milk boxes are good for your kids as well as much better for the environment. Amusingly (on my own), I have recently found that drinking a little bit of chocolate milk curbs my desire for sweets….and I would much rather have my kids drinking that than sodas. Hershey’s and Organic Valley want to spread the word about milk in single serve, shelf stable cartons. To do so, they have created applications on Facebook, Twitter and the Web. On the social networking sites, you can choose whether your friends deserve to be treated or tricked – all the while supporting World Wildlife Fund. It’s fun, it’s silly and it’s for a good cause – every time you play, they donate to WWF. Cool, huh?
It’s easy to get swept up in the Halloween spirit. No candy needed. Just remember: when you Twick Or Tweet Me on Twitter, you are also making a 10¢ donation to World Wildlife Fund.
So, how do you keep your children eating healthy….especially during the last 3 months of the year when we tend to be surrounded by junk foods (very yummy, but junk foods nonetheless!)?
