No one likes to hear a phone ringing in the wee hours of the morning.
Phone calls at odd hours of the night typically put me into instant panic mode. Who has been in an accident? Which of my friends or family members have been rushed to the hospital?
The fact is, middle of the night calls are never good news.
A few weeks ago, I took a day trip to New York with my friend Jill from Scary Mommy. Our train back to Maryland got us to the station around 1:30 am. I was in incredible pain upon leaving that train. I had walked approximately 9 miles during the day. I hurt. I was tired. And I had another hour drive before I made it back home.
I finally layed my head down on my pillow sometime before 3:00 am. My alarm was set for 6:30. I gave myself an extra 15 minutes to sleep in before needing to get out of bed to help the kids get ready for school. It was my birthday, after all. Everyone likes to sleep in on their birthday, right?
I was in a pretty deep sleep when I was jolted awake at 5:47 am. I leaped out of bed, didn’t see a phone in my bedroom, and ran downstairs to see who was calling. I thought I recognized the number but hesitated just long enough to answer that the machine got it before me.
Beep!
This had better be good, I thought, ready to pick the phone up as soon as I heard the voice on the other end.
And as I listened, I could not believe what I was hearing…
Small talk.
A giggle here and there.
Random conversation. It went on and on until the tape ran out.
And I recognized the voices.
And then I was fully awake. Stunned that I had been awakened at that horrible hour, cheated out of my last 45 minutes of precious birthday sleep, by a re-dial button accidentally set off on a cell phone in a purse.
Happy Birthday.

And, no, it was not Jill calling me. In fact, the caller does not read my blog, so never fear. It’s not you.
So tell me…..Have you ever been awakened in the middle of the night by a phone call? Was it a prank? An accident? Bad news? Have you ever heard good news at such an hour?
