I admit…I’m a sucker for fun and easy (and, yes, MESSY) arts and crafts for my kids (as long as they are easily cleaned up). I don’t always show off the creations that the kids come up with. Let’s just say that I’ve got some pretty creative kids at our house.
This weekend, the kids and I tried out an all new craft that was a total winner. Really, anything that involves lots of glue is usually a hit in our house, but this project was especially cool, especially since we had no idea what the end result would be. It was part art project, part science project.
Here’s how we made our 3D works of art:
- Card stock
- Rimmed baking sheet
- White glue
- Salt
- Colored water (just add a few drops of food coloring)
- Eyedropper
- Set the card stock on the baking sheet and have your child use the glue to draw a design on the paper.
- Sprinkle the wet glue with salt until it's completely covered, then tap off any excess.
- Have your child use the eyedropper to drip colored water, one drop at a time, onto the salt. As the salt absorbs the liquid, the water will move along the glue lines, resulting in a wonderful web of color.
- Let your art dry for several hours. Be sure to watch what happens when the color reaches intersecting lines
We’re still not sure if we did the project “correctly” but everyone enjoyed how their creations turned out. We let their glue and water dry over night and then came back eagerly, to find out what had happened.
Tip from my kids: More glue is better. Make your designs with nice, thick glue trails. When dropping he colored water onto the glue and salt, don’t drip too much water. Little drops directly on top of the glue works best (yes, we had some mess-ups that ended in rainbow-soaked papers).
