A Week in My Life: Day 2

Wednesday, October 12, 2011 by Lolli 9 Comments

I’m linking up again today with Adventuroo’s A Week in the Life series, taking a close-up look at everything I’m doing this week.

My day started out early. I thought that sleepless nights with wakeful kids were something that I left behind years ago. Not so.

Last night, AJ fell off my bed (yes, he often sleeps in my bed). I waited to see if he was hurt (it was a loud thump) but he just rubbed his head, eyes closed, looked around, and layed down again on the floor. Knowing that the floor on my husband’s side of the bed is covered with pillows, I figured he’s be pretty comfortable.

Less than an hour after I had fallen back to sleep, I was awakened by crying. AJ, still on the floor, had wedged his head underneath the bed and couldn’t figure out how to get out. A few minutes of comforting later, he was back to sleep.

A few hours after that, I was back up. Reese couldn’t sleep (stomach ache) and she wanted lots of hugs. My alarm, however late it was this morning, felt especially early.

The morning routine was normal, except for the hunting around for shorts after packing most of them away this past weekend. After a week+ of cold temps, our weather is back to warm and sunny. I’m not complaining.

I rushed home after getting the kids to school because my house was a disaster after this weekend’s clothing purge and organizing session (who am I kidding….it’s just life with 5 kids). I needed to get all 7 bins carried upstairs, the floor vacuumed, a back drop hung, and a shower (I needed that shower BADLY) before my friends – two grown sisters and a baby – came over for a photo shoot.

The cleaning, photo shoot, and grabbing something to eat for lunch took up almost the entire school day. I almost forgot the promise I had made to my youngest kids this morning.

We had a date to the book fair!

Two of my kids knew exactly what they wanted to buy before we walked in. Reese grabbed her little journal with a key, AJ grabbed a Phineas and Ferb book, and Twizzler perused the stacks. For 40 minutes.

The Scholastic Book Fair was one of my favorite things about elementary school. It was better than a candy shop. Because I loved the book fair so much, I’ve always felt guilty for not having the funds to let my kids buy the books on their wish list each year. So this year, I made sure to set some money aside for each of them to pick out something special.

Side note: I rarely buy books new. I am a used book store addict, and I have a hard time paying $10 and $15 for a book when I could find it eventually at the Used Book Store for under a dollar.

After we came home from the book fair, I enjoyed a full hour of complete peace and quiet while the kids all read their books….except for Necco, who was sewing. Still, the afternoon was oddly peaceful.

Dinner was leftovers. And then time for scouts and church activities for the girls. AJ and I stayed home together. I loaded the dishes, tried to do some writing, and then gave up and watched Phineas and Ferb with him while I sorted mountains of laundry. Sometime this week, I really need to figure out where I am going to fit in some basement-cleaning time. I have a party I need to throw on Friday night!

Once the kids finally fell asleep, I got to work, crossing off as many things from my to-do list as I could. I popped some popcorn for a late night snack At some point, it became late once again. Where is all of my time going lately?

I know for sure I won’t be finding any extra time tomorrow….In the morning I am tackling a newborn twin photo shoot!

PS – I must have fallen asleep a dozen times writing this post!

We have a Scholastic Warehouse in Raleigh so I get to go to their warehouse sale a couple of time a year. I’M like a kid in a candy store. I buy books for me, too.

And now, I want some popcorn. Also? I have fallen asleep many times in the middle of a post.

I loved the Scholastic book fairs! Now that my girls are in MDO we get the fliers sent home monthly. But I’m a used book store addict too. I can’t stand paying #15 for a book!

I love that your kid sews! Sounds like a hectic but fulfilled day.

I always wonder where all my time goes, too, and we only have 1 kid! Kudos to you for keeping it all straight with 5. :) Great idea about the book fair. I’ll have to remember that when our daughter gets older. I also loved the Scholastic books as a kid.

    That baby is soooooo cute!
And don’t feel bad, my basement looks like an episode of Hoaders. I’m just waiting for A&E to knock on my door.

Thanks! She moves around FAST! It was tough to get her to sit still for a picture. And she refused to smile, too. lol

I love the Scholastic Book Fair, too. It was always such fun to look around and have all the possibilities of things to get. It’s awesome you made it priority to set some $$ aside for them to get something. Some of my most favorite memories are of special trips to the book store after a good report card.

I love Scholastic Book Fairs. My son’s is coming up in a couple weeks and I look forward to stopping over there and finding new books for him. Although I also tend to not buy books, especially children’s books, brand new. For kids books, I like to go to the library so we can get a good variety!

The Scholastic Book Fair was one of my favorite things, too! I could sit and look through the flyer for hours! Who is that little baby girl in the b&w picture? She is so beautiful, and that is an amazing photo! I hope that tomorrow you’re able to sneak a little sleep into your day. :)
