My kids and I were invited to a local screening of Big Hero 6, the newest animated feature film from Disney. All opinions are my own. Photos and activity pages are courtesy of Disney.

About Big Hero 6:

From Walt Disney Animation Studios, the team behind “Frozen” and “Wreck-It Ralph,” comes “Big Hero 6,” an action-packed comedy-adventure about the special bond that develops between Baymax (voice of Scott Adsit), a plus-sized inflatable robot, and 14-year-old prodigy Hiro Hamada (voice of Ryan Potter).

When a devastating event befalls the city of San Fransokyo and catapults Hiro into the midst of danger, he turns to Baymax and his close friends – adrenaline junkie GoGo Tomago (voice of Jamie Chung), neatnik Wasabi (voice of Damon Wayans Jr.), chemistry whiz Honey Lemon (voice of Genesis Rodriguez) and fanboy Fred (voice of T.J. Miller). Determined to uncover the mystery, Hiro transforms his friends into a band of high-tech heroes called “Big Hero 6.”

Inspired by the Marvel comics of the same name, and featuring breathtaking action with all the heart and humor audiences expect from Walt Disney Animation Studios, “Big Hero 6” is directed by Don Hall (“Winnie the Pooh”) and Chris Williams (“Bolt”), and produced by Roy Conli (“Tangled”). The film hits theaters in 3D on Nov. 7, 2014.

Should I take my kids to see Big Hero 6?

I absolutely loved Big Hero 6, and so did the kids who came along with me (ages 15, 11, and 9). I wasn’t sure what to think about the movie from the trailers so when I sat down in the theater, I didn’t know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised.

Big Hero 6 was full of adventure, laughter, glorious and unique scenery, and inventiveness. I loved that it was about smart young people who came up with inventive creations to make the world a better place. The movie shows people using technology in a variety of ways – for bad and for good – with the underlying message that technology on its own is not a bad thing. There is so much good in the world that creative people can do with technology. I think that’s a great message for my teens and tweens.

BIG HERO 6

I would recommend Big Hero 6 as a fun family film to see together with just a few caveats. I definitely think that the target audience is older kids and teens (and adults, too!). Younger kids might get scared by the mysterious “bad guy” in a mask. They might also have a hard time dealing with the death of Hiro’s older brother and his resulting grief, as well as his feelings of revenge. The story line was definitely deeper than the typical animated movie. My kids all handled it very well – none of them were scared – but they did mention that they felt so sad for Hiro.

The best sign that the movie was a winner? The kids asked if we could buy it on DVD. I had to tell them that we’d have to wait a little while for the DVD…but that we’d be buying it for sure!

Is it worth it to see Big Hero 6 in 3D? Big Hero 6 is showing in theaters now in 3D and normal 2D view. We saw the movie in 3D and loved it. I think the 3D experience is worth it because of the magnificent scenery in San Fransokyo, as well as the the intricacies of the movements of Hiro’s microbots.

FEAST: new short shown before Big Hero 6

FEAST

I was stuck in a very long popcorn and soda line and missed all but the last 20 seconds of “Feast,” but my 15-year-old leaned over to me and said, “That was the best thing ever!” She loved it so much that she raved about it and told me all of the details about it from the theater to the freeway. Feast is a new short from first-time director Patrick Osborne (head of animation, “Paperman”) and Walt Disney Animation Studios. It is the story of one man’s love life as seen through the eyes of his best friend and dog, Winston, and revealed bite by bite through the meals they share.
