Twizzler is a natural runner. We noticed his natural speed and love for running a few years ago, but unlike team sports like soccer and football, track seems to be completely absent from the normal sports offerings for young kids.
Now that he’s finished with elementary school, he’ll be able to join the track team at the middle school in just a few months, and he’s raring to go.
This weekend, Twizzler and CandyMan ran a 5K together – it was Twizzler’s first race (other than the “Fun Run” at school each year) and he knocked it out of the park.
His final time was 28 minutes 11 seconds, but he would have been faster if he hadn’t been waiting up for his old man.
The race hardly fazed him, energy-wise, but he was definitely a happy and proud boy at the end.
When in the world did my kid turn into a little teenager?

Thats a great time for a first 5K. If he likes to run distance look into cross country. Out here CC camps start in 4th grade over the summer and the team starts in 5th grade. The high school CC camp has some 6th,7th & 8th graders too. They run all summer and into the fall. High schoolers run 5K or 3 mile races (I never know till the end which one he’s run till I look at my sons time), and the middle schoolers run 2 miles races. My son loves CC and despises track, running in circles for the distance runners does not work for him- I don’t blame him 12 laps on an indoor track yuck.
I hope your son keeps having fun running, and get used to early morning practices Matt’s camp starts at 7:15.
