I’ve been eager to share our trip to Harper’s Ferry this week, and waiting for the perfect time. And then I realized–our trip would be perfect for A Thousand Words Thursday. And, to top it off, a bunch of the pictures fit perfectly with this week’s You Capture theme–Rustic. So please forgive me while I combine memes. (I’m keeping these pictures small because there are so many of them, but you can always click the pictures for a larger view)
But before I start showing off our Harper’s Ferry outing, let me show you my rustic fence. Can you call this rustic? Or is it just old and dilapitated?
Back to Harper’s Ferry…..For those who don’t know Harper’s Ferry, it’s a quaint little town in West Virgina, at the intersection (I mean, convergence) of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers. In the mid 1800s, Harper’s Ferry was a busy industrial town with 2 railroads. John Brown chose Harper’s Ferry to begin his fight for freedom for American slaves. His actions eventually led to the Civil War. After the war, missionaries founded Storer College as a place where ALL people could receive an education.
Walking through town feels like walking through time. A little Rustic, yes?
That’s us, walking across the railroad bridge!
Reese looked adorable in her new, adopted Uncle’s hat.
After a full day of walking, AJ was ready for a rest.
The older Church…
This is why my knees still hurt, after 5 1/2 days. Stairs, stairs, and more steep stairs.
And hills. (and homemade fudge and ice cream and a really nice new, adopted Uncle who liked to treat us to yummy stuff! That’s him in the hat)
Twizzler was uncharacteristically calm all day. Why? He received a 23-page Junior Ranger book at the beginning of the day and he spent every spare minute filling every page out. Crosswords, stories, pictures, questions. He worked hard. By the end of the day, both he and Necco had earned not only the Apprentice badge, but the Journeyman AND Master level badges. Can you say Excitement and Pride?
Did I mention stairs? Did I mention that we had STROLLERS?
Twizzler guessed correctly the era of this officer’s uniform (Civil War)
And the river. It was tough to pull the kids away. What is it about kids, rivers and ROCKS? I guess they were trying to clear the beach?
The presentation of the badges:
At the end of the day, as we were driving away, the kids were asking when we could go back. KitKat stayed with a friend that day because the day before she had hurt her foot (the same one that has been broken and sprained) and we knew that the walking would not be good for it.
