When we moved into our house 17 years ago, one of the things that I was most excited about was the spacious kitchen with a big breakfast bar. In the 17 years that we’ve lived here, we’ve redone the flooring and painted the walls. We’ve replaced the dishwasher and the garbage disposal (we’re pretty hard on those two appliances) but otherwise, our kitchen is roughly the same that it was when we bought our house 17 years ago. That means that the refrigerator with the broken/missing handle is from the previous owner….the oven has at least 20 years of love…and the counter tops have seen better days. I think the counter and cabinets are original to the house, which was built in 1978.
I use my kitchen a lot. Not only do I cook daily for my family meals, but I create (and recreate) recipes to photograph and share on my blog. I admit that I have felt embarrassed to show what my kitchen really looks like (and I’m not talking about the inevitable counter top covered in dirty dishes waiting to be loaded into the dishwasher).
When I was at Type-A Parent Conference earlier this month, I had the chance to spend some time in the Best Buy Suite, which the Best Buy team had converted into a gorgeous working kitchen featuring the new LG Studio Kitchen Suite. While in the suite, we were able to explore the kitchen (my favorite part of it was either the refrigerator or the backsplash…one for utility, and the other for beauty). The fridge seemed like it was made for my family – with easy access doors for things that we need to grab often, and lots of places to store food and keep things organized.
Best Buy also invited some professional chefs in to do cooking demonstrations for conference attendees, which I found absolutely thrilling (and entertaining and educational, too). Top Chef Kevin Gillespie shared a recipe for some of the most delicious meatballs from his new cookbook Pure Pork Awesomeness: Totally Cookable Recipes from Around the World (which he gave me!). He shared his secret for tender, flavorful meatballs – King’s Hawaiian Rolls, broken up into chunks. I’ve always used dried bread crumbs in meatballs, but the fresh, moist bread actually soaks up all of the good flavors and juices like a sponge…and the results are incredible. I am loving the new cookbook, and just wish I could have brought home part of the kitchen as well. A girl can dream, right?
The kitchen is perhaps the most important room in the house, especially for a family like ours that loves to prepare home cooked meals and eat together each night. The atmosphere is important, but the utility of the space and the appliances is even more critical. If you can find a happy marriage of both design and utility, then even better.
