The SITS Back-to-Blogging challenge for today is to highlight a blog post title that you are particularly proud of. I scanned through pages and pages of blog posts to pick out a few that caught my eye as being some of my better (or at least more interesting) titles. Is a good title one that makes the blog hopper want to stay and read and find out what the post is all about, like these, maybe?
Living the High Life as a Pirate’s Mother
Dr Jekyll and Mama Hyde
Or is a good post title one that contains terms that are frequently searched for, like these? Tara’s SEO tips have led me to conclude that this type of title is preferable, though not always necessary or ideal:
Easy Kite Making Instructions for Preschool Kids
A Child’s Letter to Mom
I’ve got plenty of Top 10 lists, How-to posts, and tutorials that are great for getting Google traffic, but sometimes a title like this is simply FUN:
Lids Don’t Make Good Snow Shoes
…And a few other educational observations from this weekend’s monster-of-a-snow storm in Maryland.
But first, a before/after picture from my kitchen window:
At the beginning of the storm on Friday afternoon VS 24 hours (and almost 30 inches) later
1- Never underestimate the power of snow and simple toys to keep children entertained.
Our power was out for 18 hours. The kids, amazingly, never complained. Granted, if the power had not come back on tonight, I’m not sure if we would have fared quite so well on day two or three of no power. As it was, the kids treated today like an adventure.
2–Some things are even more entertaining than the computer and DVD player.
But I am not complaining that they are back on now…
3–Kids love being told that it’s ok to play in the street!
4–Kerosene heaters are not only ideal for heating a power-less house, but they are perfect for heating up water for hot chocolate.
And, boy-oh-boy, hot chocolate sure does taste good on days like today!
etc…
What types of post titles make you want to click and read more?
Once again, thanks to the B2B sponsors, Standards of Excellence, Westar Kitchen and Bath, and Florida Builder Appliances. Now if they’ll just deliver that new washer/dryer set to my house…

I struggle so much with titles to my blog posts. I know that it’s important and I can be witty at times, but as of late it seems to be the biggest area I struggle with in blogging.

BEAUTIFUL photos!! Just looking at them made me want to snuggle up under a blanket next to a roaring fire … and considering that I live in Florida where it is still too hot to breathe, that’s saying something.
I tried going the SEO route for a while and I probably just did it very poorly but I felt like it made my titles super-boring. I like the quirky stuff, and I’m going for “Lids Don’t Make Good Snow Shoes” every time.
So glad I found your blog, and I look forward to stopping back by!

You definitely have a gift with titles, writing, and photography too! Your titles are so clever! I love the photo of your children and the oil lamps. Incredible!
Thank you so much for taking part in the SITS B2B Day 3 Blog Frog discussion board!

Great pic of the kiddo’s in the candle light. Fantastic capture!

This post reminds me of all the good memories I have from my childhood!
Wait… that makes it sound like I have a lot of bad ones, which I don’t.
Making dinner on the kerosene heater, eating by candlelight…
How about putting everything in your fridge in a snowbank until the power comes back on? Do you do that??
It’s hard to balance good SEO titles with clever ones… I think you do it well :)

What beautiful pictures of that snow! As a California native I think snow is pretty to look at, but not so fun to live in – I did, for five years, and don’t miss all the shoveling! ;)
Isn’t this latest SITS challenge a lot of fun? Keep up the good work! ;)
Peace,
Michelle ;)

I used to love snow days growing up. After living in California for two years I really enjoyed looking at your snowy photos!

I’m not ready for snow season, either!! Thanks for taking the time to visit and read some of my old posts!

Yeah–it makes you think I actually LIKE the stuff, huh? Ugh! I am not looking forward to winter!

It really is a crazy amount. As a native California girl, I must say that I would prefer to live without it. Really. Snow is fun for kids, but a complete pain for adults.
As far as the power outages go, we’ve had plenty of non-snow-time outages, and the snow does have a few pluses: it acts as a perfect fridge and freezer so that none of your food gets spoiled and it’s a whole lots easier to pile clothes on to keep warm versus trying to stay cool with no AC in the heat and humidity (we didn’t have AC for the majority of last summer, and it was miserable!). Even so….it’s never fun for long!

Fabulous snow pictures of last winter’s havoc! Not sure I’m ready for anything close to that monumental this year! Great post titles, too! I enjoyed reading them and the associated posts.

I love this! You are highlighting all the good things about snow! I wish that I got snow days like this every once in a while… I might just like the stuff then. :)

Stopping by from SITS.
We’re from south Florida and I’ve never in my life seen snow. That is a crazy amount of white stuff. Holy cow. It looks like you guys adapted well and compared to a power outage from a hurricane, I’d say you guys had a much better time. Down here it’s just sweating, sweating, and more sweating. lol.
