Summer is almost here…and with the weather we’ve been having lately it feels like it’s already arrived! We’ve been enjoying a few treats lately that remind me of summer – cool and refreshing real-fruit popsicles and these….mason jar dirt puddings.

I remember the first time I was served dirt pudding – as a teenager many years ago. I was so impressed by the presentation (the entire dessert was served in a real clay planting pot) and I loved eating it, too. It has been years since I’ve had dirt pudding cups, but they came to my mind a week or two ago, and I thought they’d make a fun treat for the family.
I know that there are a dozen (or more) variations on this dessert. In fact, I looked dirt pudding up on Pinterest to see how my recipe varied from what everyone else was doing and I was shocked at how many different ways this simple dessert is made (I mean, it only has 4-5 ingredients…how varied could it be, right?). While I can’t speak to all those other recipes, I can attest that everyone adored the pudding cups I made and several were begging for more…present company included. My favorite part, strangely enough, was the pure pudding layer at the very bottom. Of course, I love just about any dessert with Oreos (as do my kids) so we really enjoyed that Oreos made a strong appearance in the pudding.
Ready for the simple recipe for Oreo Pudding Cups in Mason Jars?
Oreo Dirt Pudding in Mason Jars
- 1 large box (5.85 ounce) chocolate instant pudding, mixed according to package directions
- 8 ounce container of Cool Whip
- About half a package of Oreo cookies, crushed
- Gummy worms
- Mix pudding according to package directions (the box I used just had me whip in some cold milk). Let it sit for a few minutes to thicken.
- Meanwhile, crush Oreo cookies (I prefer to put them in the blender and pulse a few times. So easy and quick! But if you need to take out some aggression, put the cookies in a zippered plastic bag and pound them til they're powered).
- In small Mason Jars, scoop a thin layer of chocolate pudding. Add Cool Whip whipped topping to the remaining pudding, along with about two-thirds of the crushed Oreos. Stir gently and scoop into the Mason Jars, on top of the chocolate pudding layer. Divide equally between containers.
- Sprinkle remaining crushed Oreos over the pudding mixture and chill in fridge for at least 30 minutes.
- Just before serving, add a couple of gummy worms into the jars, as if they're coming up from our of the "dirt."
A few notes: like I mentioned above, there are dozens of ways to make these Oreo dirt pudding cups. If you want more or less of any of these ingredients, simply add the desired amount of Oreos and Cool Whip, stir, layer, and chill.
One of the things I love about making this chocolate pudding treat in Mason Jars is that the lids can be secured on the jars for easy transport or storage of leftovers. I used jars of various sizes (and some were quick large, so I’m not sure exactly how many servings to say we got from this recipe. I got 6 large puddings in my Mason Jars.

My son and daughter would love the OREO DIRT PUDDING IN MASON JARS for a treat and would have a blast making these with me. I have a lot of Mason jars in storage that I can use!
