I’m sure that my Grandma Betty would be disappointed to know that in the last 20 years of marriage, I have not used starch once.
In fact, when I asked my husband the other day if he had any clean shirts that needed to be ironed, he looked at me with a confused-but-giddy grin on his face. “Um, of course I have shirts that need to be ironed,” he said. What he really meant to say was, “You’ve never volunteered to iron anything for me, and I don’t remember the last time you pulled out the ironing board….so what’s the catch?”
Then he asked me if I was ironing for a blog post.
He knows me well.
My Grandma was an avid ironer (is that a word?) who would iron everything that came out of her washing machine, including her sheets. My Grandma was a pretty smart woman, and I’m guessing that she knew a little bit about taking care of her laundry and making her clothes last and look good…and I could probably still learn a thing or two from her.
In honor of Grandma, I asked around and searched for the best tips for ironing with starch. Starch is good for so much more than just making dress shirts crisp. I was surprised by a few things I learned. Did you know these things about spray starch?
10 Things You May Not Know About Ironing With Starch + Helpful Ironing Tips
- Spray starch actually prevents your clothes from getting dirty. Dirt, sweat, and other debris actually sticks to starch (instead of the fabric) which makes it easier to clean – and it prevents stains and wear.
- Spray starch is not just for dress shirts. Using a small amount of starch on each article of clothing (or linens!) will speed ironing time and help keep wrinkles away. The more starch you use, the more crisp your garment will be (I’d recommend not going over-board. Spray, iron, and then spray again….that should be enough).
- When you spray starch on your clothing, be sure to let it soak in for a few seconds before ironing. This will keep your iron from having a residue build-up on the bottom, and it will give the starch a chance to penetrate the fabric first.
- Iron clothes when they are slightly damp. Try to avoid over-drying them in the dryer.
- Proper starch application makes a difference: tilt the can slightly, but never more than 45° from an upright position. Hold the can about 6-10 inches away from the garment.
- Prevent starch build-up on your can of starch by rinsing the spray button when finished. It will spray much more smoothly and evenly next time you use it.
- Never iron a garment that is not clean. Not only do you risk setting a stain with the heat form the iron, but dirt may interfere with the stiffening properties in your starch.
- After ironing and starching your garments, hang them up and allow to be exposed to fresh air for a minutes before putting it away in the closet. This extra air time gives the starch a chance to finish adhering to the fibers of the fabric.
- When you iron with spray starch, you don’t need to use the steam setting on your iron. The starch provides enough moisture to smooth out wrinkles quickly and easily. Adding extra steam will actually just increase ironing time.
- Sort garments by fabric type. Iron things that require a low-temperature setting first, then work up the temperature range to your garments that need high temps.

I grew up with all the women in my family using starch, it was a given. I have used starch on dress shirts for my hubby when we were first married, however, it did not last. I truly did not know the actual benefits of using starch, great to know. :)

I have not used starch in years on my clothes. My Mom always had me and my sister iron and starch the clothes. But I do not think I was very good. I like the tips in how to starch clothes, and would love to starch some of my Dad’s shirts.

I iron very little these days. I have never used starch before. My daughters aunt uses it all the time for her husbands work shirts. I thought it was interesting though about when you iron with spray starch, you do not need to use the steam setting.

My grandma always uses starch! When I’m at her house sewing with her and she catches me not using it, she huffs and brings it to the ironing board :)
