When The Lightning Thief originally came out, my now-14-year-old son was too young to read. It was a few years before we discovered Percy Jackson in our home. Back then, my son was a hesitant reader. His reading skills were just fine, but he found very little joy in reading. Reading was homework. Reading was a chore. And it drove me crazy that there was no amount of persuasion that could convince him that reading could be fun.
Until Percy Jackson came around.
My son went from don’t-force-me-to-read to flashlight-in-the-bed, don’t-make-me-stop-reading. He couldn’t get enough of Percy Jackson, and over the next few years, he re-read the entire series at least 5 times.
We are honored to be celebrating 10 years of Percy Jackson with author Rick Riordan and fellow fans of the series.
This weekend, my son and I came up with a list of 10 things we learned from Percy Jackson. Although we got off to a slow start, once we got rolling, the ideas came pouring out. There are so many amazing lessons to be learned from Percy Jackson (I bet we could think of 10 more, easy!).
10 Things I Learned From Percy Jackson
1. Always have more than one plan.
2. Never give up, even if the road ahead seems dark and the future seems bleak.
3. Trust your friends and be loyal.
4. Just because things aren’t perfect doesn’t mean they can’t be fixed.
5. Even heroes drool in their sleep.
6. There is magic in the world, and it’s a lot closer than you think.
7. Carry yourself with confidence.
8. Expect the unexpected.
9. Don’t butt heads with people you don’t know.
10. Everyone has a hero in them. They just have to find it.
About the Percy Jackson and the Olympians Series
Percy Jackson is a good kid, but he can’t seem to focus on his schoolwork or control his temper. And lately, being away at boarding school is only getting worse–Percy could have sworn his pre-algebra teacher turned into a monster and tried to kill him. When Percy’s mom finds out, she knows it’s time that he knew the truth about where he came from, and that he go to the one place he’ll be safe. She sends Percy to Camp Half Blood, a summer camp for demigods (on Long Island), where he learns that the father he never knew is Poseidon, God of the Sea. Soon a mystery unfolds and together with his friends–one a satyr and the other the demigod daughter of Athena–Percy sets out on a quest across the United States to reach the gates of the Underworld (located in a recording studio in Hollywood) and prevent a catastrophic war between the gods.

I feel like it’s going to undoubtedly be cliche but Harry Potter 100% got me into reading and loving books. I looked forward to every new book that came out, and while I was waiting I of course had to find books to fill my time! If I couldn’t read stories of my favorite characters I had to find other books to love!
Marty C. says

The Harry Potter series. I read the first couple out loud to my son, then he took off on his own. Percy is another fave, as is Gregor the Overlander.
Julie Smith says
I have to say that I’m surprised by this answer, because when I think about it, my 3 girls are each 5 years apart and my son (the youngest) is 7 years apart from his next-older sister, but every single one of them was moved and inspired to read more by “The Giver” (Lois Lowry). When the movie finally came out, I got it on DVD and it was borrowed and watched by each of my grown-up girls and watched at home with my son as well.
Jessica To says
We read all the Trixie Belden books when I was growing up.

We read Percy Jackson together. I love the adventure too! We review the Gods and learn about the demigods and their powers.

I have always been a reader, but the first series I remember REALLY loving and marathoning my way through was the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. My third grade teacher read Farmer Boy to our class and I loved it so much that I checked out Little House in the Big Woods from the library. She told me that if I could read the entire series by the end of the school year, she’d bring me a surprise (a book she had that had pictures of Laura and her family members). I’d never read so fast or with such fervor!
Autumn says
I jumped on the Percy fan train way late, but am so glad I did. I now have a son and can’t wait to read this series with him!

My son loves Percy Jackson, he loves to read these kind of books. The Spirit Animals book series is what helped get my son into reading more.
