On Friday, I saw my City – my Country – through new eyes. Not only did I see a few new-to-me sights as I played tourist in my hometown, but I had the privilege of sitting in front of a family who was seeing the sites of Washington DC for the very first time.
I was planning on spending Friday running errands and getting work done. But my friend, Safire, convinced me at the last minute to use one of her tickets to ride on an open-top double decker bus through DC. I thought I had seen all of the sites of DC, but I had never seen them from 13 feet off the ground or through the eyes of an awed newcomer.
In the words of my fellow passengers, “I love my country!” and “Seeing all of these monuments makes me proud to be an American!”
Though Mother Nature didn’t sufficiently turn down the heat for our 4 hour top-of-the-world DC tour, she certainly provided a spectacular sky for pictures.
The most memorable stop on our tour was the hour we spent in this tree. The bus over-heated in the middle of a DC neighborhood, under a too-short tree. The kids who were along for the ride did surprisingly well, and my family didn’t kill me for being 4 hours late. It’s all good (as long as I come home with good pictures, right?)
Happily playing along with I Heart Faces’ “I Heart My Country” theme for this week.
