Let’s face it – Vacation means something different to just about everyone. In fact, the definition of Vacation caused many a disagreement….or at least some unhappy campers…early in our family life. The challenge in planning a vacation for a family (especially a family our size) is finding a place that satisfies some of everyone’s vacation “needs.”
For me, Vacation means relaxing. It doesn’t really matter where I relax, but some pretty scenery certainly doesn’t hurt. Neither does a pool and hot tub. I love to stay up late reading a good book and sleep in (while the kids entertain themselves in front of Nick Jr.). Since we don’t have TV, I find aimlessly surfing the channels on TV quite relaxing as well. Outings? Fun but stressful. Theme parks? Love them, but not so much with the kids. Camping? I’d rather spend the day hiking and enjoying nature and then sleep in a real bed. Shopping? You bet!
CandyMan, on the other hand, has a very different view on what a vacation is. Sitting still and sleeping in is not relaxing. He must be on the go, experiencing a new adventure every minute of every day. When we were younger parents of two kids, I remember riding down the Truckee River near Lake Tahoe and just wanting to enjoy the gorgeous scenery. CandyMan wanted to see how fast we could make it to the end of the river. I think we made record time. According to my husband, every day must be planned out and not wasted.
I love the fact that Kissimmee, Florida has a little bit of everything close by and could satisfy everyone’s definition of Vacation. Walt Disney World is right next door (close enough, in fact, to spend one day at the park with the kids and then make the next day “adults only”….my idea of fun!). I think I might have to make a trip to Universal Studios, Orlando just so that I could experience the Wizarding World of Harry Potter for myself. The kids would be in heaven.
CandyMan could play a round of golf while I slept in every morning, and by the time he was back from his 18 holes, I’d be ready for a scenic hike and some bird watching and photography. I think that an airboat ride through the Florida Everglades would thrill even the pickiest family member…part theme park ride, part nature….with exciting alligators around every turn.
What would you do on a trip to Kissimmee, Florida? What does your dream vacation look like?

I have to agree with you about vacations being about relaxing. Just being able to lay out in the sun feels like a vacation from my hectic like. I tend to view those times when you go to a place and have to see all the sights as an adventure rather than a relaxing getaway. Either way though, I love doing them :)

Yes, I can see that. And I’m sure you aren’t surprised by my confession that going strong wears me out! I crave relaxing times, though they tend to be hard to come by!

I’d have to agree with CandyMan on his view of vacation. I love to be out DOING something. If I went to Kissamee, I’d be visiting the OCEAN, which I hope is close by. Also, that air boat thing sounded really fun. And Harry Potter’s world! Juice just finished reading the first one to Butterfly and she’s all about the magic right now. Man, now I want to go there!
