The time has finally come. I’m taking Twizzler in to have his eyes checked, and I fear that it’s finally his turn to have his own set of eyeglasses like his dad and big sisters. He’s got all of the signs: squinting, complaining that he can’t read things, ans sadly…..family history. My girls got their first set of eyeglasses between 8 and 9 years old, and unfortunately, it seems that he will be no different. I was hoping that someone in the family would get mine and my father’s good eyes, but I suppose the bad eye sight has won out. Just like there’s no turning back after that first bowl of rice cereal is eagerly introduced to a baby, once glasses enter the picture, there is no turning back.
My Grandpa was an optometrist, and my father was in school to follow in my maternal Grandpa’s path when he passed away. My mom spent her late teen and early twenties working in Grandpa’s office, adjusting prescription glasses, helping clients, learning the business herself. Glasses have been a big part of the world around me, but never part of my own world. I’ve been lucky enough to escape with decent eye sight.
As much as getting that first prescription from the eye doctor is a bittersweet day for me as the mom, my kids have all been thrilled to get their first pair of glasses. My girls love picking out trendy, fashionable frames. Where I am drawn to the low-profile frames, they like the stand out and make an impression styles, with black frames and designs on the sides. My kids’ glasses quickly become a part of their personality. A part of what makes them stand out and a part of who they are. Although KitKat finally got her wish to move to contact lenses, she still has to wear her glasses daily before bed and sometimes to give her eyes a rest in the evening at home.
Since 8-13 year olds grow fast (and grow out of eye glasses even faster), we’ve had to order new prescription eyeglasses for them once or twice a year. We discovered internet eyeglass companies a few years ago, and were totally converted when we were able to save so much money on their new glasses. And with the right measurements from the optometrist, we’ve been able to order the right style and size every time. It’s the only way to go for a family with 3 glasses-wearers (and growing).
