I was talking about a favorite Spring-time dessert last week with some friends online, and promised that I would share the recipe here after the holiday. After eating a bowl of Wonderful for a before-lunch snack this morning, I remembered my promise. You will thank me later, I swear!
This dessert is an old family favorite from one of my aunts, and was often present at family gatherings and holiday meals when I was growing up. We appropriately called it Wonderful.
WONDERFUL Dessert Recipe – a traditional family favorite for the holidays
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cup flour
- 3 Tbsp brown sugar
- 1 1/2 sticks (12 Tbsp) butter or margarine (melted)
- 1 8-ounce package cream cheese, room temperature
- 1/2 of an 8-oz package Cool Whip (ie, 4 ounces)
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- One large package of chocolate instant pudding (plus milk according to package)
- 1/2 of an 8-oz package Cool Whip (ie, 4 ounces)
- 1/2 cup chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans), if desired
Instructions
- Mix together crust ingredients and press into the bottom of a 9x13" pan. Bake at 350° F for 20 minutes and then let cool.
- Layer 1: Meanwhile, mix ingredients for layer one. Spread over cooled crust and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
- Layer 2: When layer one has chilled, mix a large package of chocolate instant pudding according to package directions and spread over layer one.
- Layer 3: Spread the rest of the cool whip on top of the pudding and garnish with chopped nuts, if desired. Keep in the refrigerator.

This is our family’s favorite dessert! I make it without the brown sugar though. I’ll have to give that a try! :)

I love this dessert, but I’ve only ever heard it called Sex in a Pan, which was fine before I had kids, and now I just call it “Yummy Chocolate Dessert”, which is a bit vague.

We call that pudding cake at my house. It’s my brother’s favorite and my grandmother always makes my brother’s favorites when he’s in town.
