Wonderful Dessert: Chocolate, Cream Cheese and Cool Whip Layered Treat

Tuesday, April 26, 2011 by Lolli 6 Comments

I was talking about a favorite Spring-time dessert last week with some friends online, and promised that I would share the recipe here after the holiday. After eating a bowl of Wonderful for a before-lunch snack this morning, I remembered my promise. You will thank me later, I swear!

Wonderful Chocolate Cream Cheese Cool Whip Layered Dessert from Better in Bulk

This dessert is an old family favorite from one of my aunts, and was often present at family gatherings and holiday meals when I was growing up. We appropriately called it Wonderful.

Wonderful – A Dessert That Lives Up To It’s Name

Ingredients

    Crust:
  • 1 1/2 cup flour
  • 3 Tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 sticks (12 Tbsp) butter or margarine (melted)
  • Layer 1
  • 1 8-ounce package cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1/2 of an 8-oz package Cool Whip (ie, 4 ounces)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • Layer 2
  • One large package of chocolate instant pudding (plus milk according to package)
  • Layer 3
  • 1/2 of an 8-oz package Cool Whip (ie, 4 ounces)
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans), if desired

Instructions

  1. Mix together crust ingredients and press into the bottom of a 9x13" pan. Bake at 350° F for 20 minutes and then let cool.
  2. Layer 1: Meanwhile, mix ingredients for layer one. Spread over cooled crust and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  3. Layer 2: When layer one has chilled, mix a large package of chocolate instant pudding according to package directions and spread over layer one.
  4. Layer 3: Spread the rest of the cool whip on top of the pudding and garnish with chopped nuts, if desired. Keep in the refrigerator.

This is our family’s favorite dessert! I make it without the brown sugar though. I’ll have to give that a try! :)

I love this dessert, but I’ve only ever heard it called Sex in a Pan, which was fine before I had kids, and now I just call it “Yummy Chocolate Dessert”, which is a bit vague.

We call that pudding cake at my house. It’s my brother’s favorite and my grandmother always makes my brother’s favorites when he’s in town.
