The older my kids get, the busier the holiday season becomes. That’s 5 kids who are involved in boy and girl scouts, choirs, youth activities at church, plays at school and orchestra. And each of those activities seem to schedule some kind of Winter presentation.
This morning, I headed to the elementary school to hear 6 year old Reese and her best friend sing a Christmas song that they wrote during indoor recess a week or so ago. The school was so impressed by their song that they asked the girls to perform at the school’s Winter sing along, but neither of the girls will be there, so they opted to have them sing for the school’s morning announcements. I was waiting out in the hall to congratulate them when they left the office. Could they be any cuter?
This evening, we attended Necco’s 5th grade chorus concert, where not only did she sing, but acted as one of the introductory narrators. In Russian. So proud. Her concert tonight was well organized and so much fun, but it honestly left me chuckling. When I was in 5th grade, we sang Jingle Bells and some generic Santa songs, and then always added “Dreidel Dreidel Dreidel” to be “fair.” Tonight, no joke, they sang songs for Christmas, Hanukkah, Chinese New year, Kwanzaa, and Las Posadas. Am I forgetting any? It was lovely, really.
And, as a treat, Reese was asked to be Mary for a fun little live Nativity with some of the kids from church. Apparently, being Mary gets you out of singing along….

That song is beautiful! I’m impressed that they wrote it themselves and even more impressed at their beautiful voices. Merry Christmas!
PS I thought you were on a blogging break until several of your posts came through my feed reader at once yesterday. :)

Are you serious? In Russian? I am amazed. I don’t even know all of the words to Feliz Navidad.
And I couldn’t agree more re how holidays have evolved since our youth. It really is great that kids are so aware culturally.
Glad to see you enjoying all that is the holiday season!
