In a house full of seven people, I have to buy a ton of things in bulk. That little tidbit shouldn’t surprise you at all considering the name of this site…. Not only do I try to shop frugally and smart, but I have an open conversation with my kids about how they can tell when items are really a good deal. Even my kids know that just because an item is on sale does not mean that it is a good deal.
I try to save money any way I can. I buy food and household items on sale whenever possible, and really do pay attention to how much I’m getting for my money.
There have been a few times, however, when I have regretted being frugal while shopping.
Take toilet paper, for instance. I was running low on TP the other day, and figured that I’d better stock up so I didn’t run out again anytime soon.
I stared at the shelves of toilet paper, comparing “price per sheet” and finally settled on one particular brand. I had used this brand plenty of times before and associated them with soft TP….a very important bathroom requirement. The packages of toilet paper that I loaded into my cart promised to be extra soft. And the price was incredible. Woohoo! I really scored on the TP. Since I was so low, I bought a ton of it.
The first time I sat down on my toilet seat, I knew right away that something was different. The brand new toilet paper was nothing like I had expected, and I pulled the package out to take a closer look. How in the world had I missed that one little important detail?
I had purchased so many rolls of toilet paper without verifying that it was two-ply. You’d think that two sheets of one-ply would come close to two-ply, right?
Wrong.
This was definitely one case where making a frugal choice was NOT the better choice. In fact, this frugal purchase totally backfired.
Do you have any funny stories of frugal purchases gone wrong?
I wanted to mention today about a fun sweepstakes going on right now with Clorox. Here are some details about the contest:
