Even Worms Look Better With Bokeh – GMYBS

Thursday, March 25, 2010 by Lolli 26 Comments

I mentioned a while ago that I got a new Canon 50mm f/1.8 metal mount lens, like this one, here:

Canon 50mm metal mount

As much as I didn’t love my first 50mm lens (I believe I had a lemon), I adore this lens. They don’t make these anymore, and I don’t know why. The metal mount is glorious. The bokeh is creamy and gorgeous (click the word for a quick tutorial if you don’t know what bokeh is).

It was the bokeh in this shot that made a picture of a worm on a stick (eww!) my favorite picture of the week:

Worms look better with bokeh

Here’s another example of the lovely bokeh I can get with my 50mm:

Now it’s your turn. What did you do this week? For those of you who haven’t played along before, GMYBS is not a contest, and it’s for any level of photographer. It’s simply a fun way to show off the favorite picture (or favorites) that you’ve taken this week.  Read to find out more about Give Me Your Best Shot
PS–happily linked to Cecily’s PhotoStory Friday, too!

I love the worm shot! I have a question-do you color boost your shots with an editing program-your photos are so colorful and people’s eyes “pop” out.

I love looking at your pictures. I have a simple camera which I am happy I have, don’t get me wrong, but I hope to one day get a nice camera so I can take awesome shots like yours. Until then, I will do what I can and enjoy the dynamic work of others. :)

Product photography can be tricky, because you have to get lighting and background and angle just right. You seem to have a good eye for it, though!

As far as the meme goes, Cecily and I have both been doing our own memes for a while now…and we both like each other’s and have talked about linking up and encouraging our readers to visit each other. But we only officially co-host together once a month or so. Cecily still has other co-hosts on the other weeks. So, yes, they are still separate most of the time. :)

I didn’t know what that was called! Thank you so much! Next time I go to buy a camera, now I’ll know exactly what to ask about.

As you know, most of my photography these days is product photography. Bokeh is extremely important when you’re taking pictures of small things like jewelry and can often be a struggle.

Here’s one of my favorites from this week!

I am so confused about this meme. I thought it was connected with photo story Friday and they were both going to merge… I guess I should add your button in my post too. Holy Crickeys! : )

A great photographer — such as yourself — can make ANYTHING — even worms — look good.

    Well done.

I wouldn’t say that the worm looks GOOD….it still looks pretty disgusting. But it IS an interesting picture! ;)

Doesn’t it stink when you don’t know something to begin with (whatever that may be) and find out after it’s too late that you wish you’d gone with something else? I’m sure your camera is great, though!

I actually ended up going with the discontinued metal mount f/1.8. While it is about $50 more than the new plastic mount (on eBay, of course) I read lots of reviews about it being just as good as the 1.4. Because really, what you’re paying for, mostly, is the sturdier build. I couldn’t be happier.

    Thursday, March 25, 2010 at 10:41 pm

Happy weekend to you, too! Glad you enjoyed the worm. I’m sure my son thought I was a little loopy for making him hold it up for the camera. ;)

LOVE a worm on a stick! My pix are never “purty” but I’m so grateful for my li’l Lumix that helps me capture those moments (and papers) that might end up discarded otherwise.

    Happy almost weekend, Lolli! ;)

I have the 50mm 1.8, and while I loved it for a while, I am really not liking it now. It looks like you’ve upped it to at least the 1.4 if not the 1.2? I’m trying to decide if I should just get the 1.4. Can’t afford the 1.2, unfortunately. :(

    Gorgeous shots!

I love it. I sooo want a fixed focal length lens. But, alas, I didn’t know what I was doing when I got my DSLR and it’s compact, so I’d have to spend a fortune on one that would autofocus, or buy one that wouldn’t auto focus (which I can’t do to save my life.)

I love bokeh…LOVE it – sometimes I even try to make the picture more about the bokeh than anything else.

I am so impressed you made a worm look good! That’s awesome.

Mmmmmm. Bokeh. So much fun to say and even more fun to play with!

I will say that I am still learning about my 50mm but I AM loving it. Baby steps. :)

And you’re right. Even worms look good with the right kind of bokeh in the background!
