Every Girl Needs a Hero: Favorite Books with Strong Female Characters

Wednesday, March 12, 2014 by Lolli Leave a Comment

I love to read. I always have. So many of my favorite childhood memories involve books, whether it was my mom reading out loud to me in the living room or I was all alone, propped up in bed with an extra pillow or two. Although this post is sponsored by SkinnyScoop, I have personally read a ton of the books in the widget below, and each of the strong female characters in each of those books is like a friend to me. As always, thoughts and opinions are my own.

Every girl needs a hero…don’t you agree? In a world with so many negative influences, I love that my daughters and I can turn to so many fabulous girls in literature (from picture books to 1000+ page novels) to find strong, courageous, feisty, caring, inventive girls to look up to.

My top 10 strong female characters

  • Laura (Little House on the Prairie)
  • Meg (A Wrinkle in Time)
  • Elphaba (Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West)
  • Lily (Snow Flower and the Secret Fan)
  • Pippi (Pippi Longstocking)
  • Sarah (Sarah, Plain and Tall)
  • Another Sarah (These is my Words: The Diary of Sarah Agnes Prine)
  • Corrie (The Hiding Place)
  • Miri (Princess Academy)
  • Anne (Anne of Green Gables)

Who are some of your favorite female characters in books?
