It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

Friday, December 12, 2008 by Lolli Leave a Comment

My bloggy friend, Francesca, sent me this Holiday Meme. I’ve been sitting on it for a few days, waiting for a day when I didn’t have anything else to say. When did I get so talkative? This was a lot of fun to read, and even more fun to answer. You are welcome and encouraged to copy the questions and do it on your blog….for posterity’s sake.
PS–stop by my previous post if you haven’t already. I need input! :)

Egg nog or hot chocolate?
Hot chocolate. But only a teeny bit. I’ve never been too keen on hot drinks.

Does Santa wrap presents or set them under the tree?
Usually he wraps the presents and sets them near the couch next to the tree, so they’re apart from the family gifts. There have been a few times when Santa’s gifts were just too big to wrap….

Colored lights on tree or white?
We have all white lights. But PB never puts up enough for my taste. I want that tree sparkling, and he likes to hide the lights way in the back.

When do you put your decorations up?
We try for the first Monday of December. We almost always decorate on a Monday night (FHE). We buy the tree after dinner and then stay up really late putting the decorations up. Well, the kids put the decorations up while I take pictures and Daddy sits by watching everything. The next day, I clean up the mess and put out the rest of the holiday decor. There are always places on the tree that need to be fixed.

What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)?
That’s a tough one. Maybe crescent rolls….or seven layer salad.…or ham with sour cream potatoes. I love Christmas food!!

Favorite holiday memory as a child:
My favorite holiday memory is absolutely Christmas Eve at my Grandma and Grandpa’s house. We had a billion aunts, uncles, and cousins. We ate, had a hilarious white elephant gift exchange, and sang Christmas songs for hours.

When and how did you learn the truth about Santa?
I have no memory of believing or not believing. :( I’ll have to ask my mom.

Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve?
As a kid, we always opened our new pj’s on Christmas Eve. Now, my kids all get to open one gift….which happens to typically be Uncle Brian’s present. Brian usually sends his box of wrapped presents really early (way to go, Brian!) and by the time Christmas Eve comes along, the kids are totally eager to find out what they are. I usually don’t put my own presents for the kids out until the day or two before Christmas. It’s too hard to monitor the presents’ safety. :)

How do you decorate your Christmas tree?
Daddy puts the lights up, and then each family member puts their “first ornament” on the tree while Mom takes a picture. Then it’s a free-for-all. We put everything up all at once while listening to Elvis’ Christmas Album.

Snow! Love it or dread it?
Hmmmm…..mostly dread it. I grew up in California, and snow was not part of Christmas. Since I didn’t get to enjoy the fun of snow as a child and now I’m an aching no-fun adult, snow is only extra work for me. It IS pretty, though.

Can you ice skate?
I used to ice skate a lot as a kid with my best friend, who took lessons. I don’t know how I’d do now….

Do you remember your favorite gift?
I think I’d say my favorite gift was a gold ring with my birth stone, an opal, that I received the Christmas that I was 11. I wore that ring until last year, when one of the prongs broke. Amazingly, I found the opal and saved it. I checked on having it fixed, but for now it’s just too expensive.

What’s the most important thing about the holidays for you?
Family….and flooding my kids and my home with remembrances of Christ. I love the feeling at Christmas time when we’re surrounded by all things Christ.

What is your favorite holiday dessert?
Caramel!!!

What is your favorite tradition?
Making and giving away candy. And the music and the movies.

Which do you prefer, giving or receiving?
Giving. I love finding thoughtful gifts.

What is your favorite Christmas Song?
Star Bright

Candy canes! Yuck or yum?
I love candy canes IN things, but I’m not really big on eating them plain.

Ever recycled a Christmas present?
You betcha!

***Now a few that I’m adding on my own:***

Favorite Christmas movie?

White Christmas. Wait I change my mind. I LOVE Scrooge with Albert Finney. The musical one.

When do you put the wrapped presents under the Christmas tree?

A day or two before Christmas, or on Christmas Eve. I hide them in my basement laundry area until then.

When do you have your big Christmas feast?

Now, our big feast is on Christmas day, but growing up we had the big dinner on Christmas Eve. Since KitKat was born on Christmas Eve, we make that night more about her. We made it a tradition to go out to eat at our favorite Salvadoran restaurant on Christmas Eve.

And the BIG question: Real tree or artificial?

We’re a real tree family. I would consider an artificial tree if it weren’t for my husband’s strong opinions against them. I love the smell and the look of real trees, but the mess that they leave behind is not enjoyable!
