When CandyMan and I got married in April 1995, one of our first purchases on that big wedding-money-shopping-spree was a microwave. I purposefully bought the largest microwave I could find, with all the bells and whistles, similar to this GE Profile, because I knew that we’d be using it a lot. And I wanted something that would easily fit a dinner plate, or a whole chicken, or even a casserole dish inside.
My microwave was perfection, even after 15 years of hard use…..Until Saturday, when KitKat tried heating up some butter and found that it was still frozen solid after 2 minutes in the microwave. We tried heating water. Cold. I desperately attempted to heat my Moji. No success.
My microwave was dead.
Despite the fact that my microwave had lived a good long life and served my family well, I mourned it’s loss. After 15 years of having that microwave in every kitchen I’ve lived in since getting married 15 1/2 years ago, I wasn’t ready to toss it out with the trash.
Necco and CandyMan gave the microwave a short memorial service.
I took a picture of it before putting it out front for trash pick up.
We replaced it with a tiny office microwave that CandyMan wasn’t using anymore. The newer microwave works. It heats my water and my leftovers and my Moji. But it just isn’t the same. I have to open the door manually, it doesn’t have the quick keys I’m used to, and-most importantly-it doesn’t fit a dinner plate inside.
I am currently getting a letter ready to over-night to Santa. I need a new GE microwave for Christmas!
Note: this is not a sponsored post. My microwave really did die, and I really did love it enough to take a picture with it before throwing it out with the trash. The link to the GE Profile microwave is an affiliate link to Amazon.

Marvellous it lasted 15 years. Mine’s about 6 now and still going strong. I sometimes look at all the bells and whistles on the newer versions but just feel so comfortable with the one I know (sad eh!)
Hope Santa came through for you.

I’m glad to hear the microwave story…I wondered why you replaced it with a small one! I hope you guys a real one soon!
Lolli says
Yes, yes it did. We’ll just have to see how long a family of seven can function with a dorm-sized microwave. At least it’s been good for heating up cups for hot chocolate! :)

That’s sad! And I totally agree. Tonight, I was watching a DVD with the kids, and the DVD player was wigging out. The list keeps getting longer and longer…

We were married on the 28th–just 6 days after you! That’s crazy! And apparently 15 years is the life span of a GE microwave. I’d say that’s pretty good. :)
Lolli says
Yes! I can’t imagine waiting all day for my meat to thaw. Or boiling a cup of water on the stove just to make some hot chocolate. Geesh! ;)
Lolli says
That’s crazy that you haven’t replaced either (though that would be me, too! Things keep dying at our house and I have no money to get new ones). I hope Santa is kind to both of us this year!

Ohhh, poor microwave. It sounds like it died serving the family it loved though. But still, I don’t know that I could function without one.

I think my micro is on its last zaps too! the button doesn’t even like to open the door w/o persuasion! I have a lot of things dieing too… always comes in bunches….

My 11 year old daughter was sad when she found out that the garbage collectors took the microwave away. I think she was hoping we’d keep it as extra kitchen storage.
Lolli says
Thanks. I know Santa will listen to you! :)
Lolli says
Thanks! My Christmas wish list just seems to get longer and longer. :(

what date in April did you get married? although my husband and I have been together for over 26 years, we got married April 22, 1995. We also bought a microwave which just started going on the fritz. He sometimes turns on by itself and I can’t come to throw it out. Here’s the kicker…it’s a GE!!!! Are we soul sisters…lol

Our old faithful microwave just died too and I can’t believe how totally addicted we are to microwaving…especially for dethawing meat. I’ll have to tell Santa to look at the GE Profile.

Hi Lori! I just had to comment. My microwave died about a month ago and as sad as this sounds, I still have not purchased a new one yet. Last week, I was vacuuming, my vaccuum died also. Not kidding, I told my daughter that I seriously wish there was a Santa Clause!
Erica says
Oh no! I’m sorry to hear about your microwave!!! I hope it goes peacefully to the microwave graveyard where it can fondly remember heating up all your family’s favorites :)
Safire says
Oh no! SO sad. Calling Santa for you right now…:)

oh man! what a bummer! Here’s to hoping Santa reads your letter. :)
