My Kitchen Remodel – From Outdated to Finally Finished

Monday, August 29, 2011 by Lolli 2 Comments

Our sadly outdated kitchen

Our kitchen remodel started many years ago. Friends who have known me for a long time may remember the dizzying brown and yellow brittle linoleum on the floor and the dark wood paneling on the walls. The cabinets were an even darker shade of brown.

Yes, my kitchen had not been updated since 1978 – the year my house was built.

I was too accustomed to everything being cream and brown. I was sick of cream and brown. And so our first plan was to brighten up the kitchen and add some color.

The linoleum was replaced with a lighter laminate flooring. The cabinets were painted yellow, the paneling was ripped down and replaced with white and periwinkle blue paint.

And that’s where my decorating sense ended. For years, I didn’t go beyond those basic kitchen improvements.

Finally….some color!

It wasn’t until recently, when I stumbled upon a painting at Gallery Direct, that my 6-year-old kitchen project finally felt complete. When I saw this particular piece of art, I knew it was made for my kitchen.

Amazingly, the blues matched my unique periwinkle perfectly. The yellow lemons tied in the cabinets and the yellow curtains. The green of the lemon tree finally helped my green-trimmed kitchen table and chairs “fit” my kitchen.

I ordered the print on acrylic so that it would be kitchen-friendly (ie – safer from flinging food and fingerprints behind my kitchen table). Although it was trickier to hang than the canvas wrap I ordered for my bedroom, the hanging instructions were clear….and my husband figured it out on the first try. He’s talented like that.

Now that my kitchen feels complete, I am curious about how everyone else picks their colors and decor.

How important are “accessories” to the finished look of a room?

Do you have a piece of artwork that ties everything together?
