Naming Baby – How Did You Decide?

Thursday, June 14, 2012 by Lolli

Naming a new baby is a HUGE responsibility, and one that CandyMan and I didn’t take lightly. Every time we were expecting a baby, we pondered over baby names, including first name and middle name combinations. We looked at name meanings, discussed what the baby’s initials would be, and how their name would go together with the other names in the family.

Luckily, we were on the same page for almost everything name-related and didn’t really struggle with choosing a name until baby #5 was on his way. But HIS is not the story I love to tell.

None of my kids’ names hold as deep and powerful of a meaning as baby #4, who we call Reese on the blog. The journey to her name started 7 years before she was born, on the day we brought our first daughter home from the hospital.

Although we had chosen KitKat’s name before she was born, something funny happened when we brought her home. Every time Daddy bent down to talk tenderly to his new baby girl, the name Reese came out. He laughed at first (we had never even discussed the name Reese) and then as it continued, he began to wonder if we had chosen the wrong name.

KitKat’s name stuck, and Dad stopped calling her Reese. Then baby #2, another girl, was born, named in honor of her Dad (he was supposed to be a girl with the name Necco….didn’t work out that way). When we brought her home from the hospital, the same spooky thing happened. Dad inadvertently called her Reese during that first week.

When the same thing happened with our second child, we started to wonder what was up. We decided that there must be one more girl for our family, and her name just HAD to be Reese. As we waited for Reese to come, I felt like she was already a part of her family, and I already loved her, long before she was conceived.

When Reese finally joined our family 4 years later, we knew instantly that this was the little girl we’d been waiting for. The name fit her to a T.

How did you decide on your baby’s name? Or do you have a great story on how your parents decided on your name? Tell me for a chance to win a year’s supply of cards from Cardstore.com!
