Energy-Saving Halogen Light Bulbs from Sylvania

Sunday, March 21, 2010 by Lolli 2 Comments

I like to think of myself as a relatively eco-friendly person. I recycle every bit of paper that comes through my house, re-use water bottles, take out three bins-worth of recyclables each week, turn off lights when not in use, etc. I’ve been practicing these simple earth-friendly habits since I was a teen living in California. It’s part of the way I live.

I have looked for additional ways to be “green” without having to change my lifestyle or spend lots of money. I would love to install new windows in my house, but the budget doesn’t allow for that right now.   But I know that there are little things I can do to not only make a difference, but teach my children to live “green” too.

I was recently sent two SYLVANIA halogen SUPERSAVER light bulbs to try out. I was happy that these halogen bulbs were shaped like the familiar “regular” light bulbs (just a little smaller around). The SYLVANIA halogen SUPERSAVER light bulb emits the same bright white light as regular incandescent bulbs, but uses up to 33% less energy (and no mercury). With a familiar shape and dimmable features, these bulbs can also fit easily into pre-existing accent lights, track lights, or other fixtures, making them a great transition lightbulb.  Did you know that traditional incandescents are being phased out under the Federal Government’s Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007.

While poking around Sylvania.com, I found the Sylvania Earth Day Challenge. In celebration of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, SYLVANIA is challenging everyone to take energy-efficient actions at home and at work that, over 40 days, will add up to 40 million kilowatt hours. Everyone who takes the challenge will be rewarded a coupon for $1-off the new SYLVANIA Halogen SUPERSAVER® or CFL.

Even more exciting is the fact that if you make an Earth Day Challenge pledge to switch to CFLs and you could win a carbon-neutral trip to Disney. Can’t complain about that. Find out more about the challenge by watching Sylvania on Twitter.

What are you going to change this year to make your home more energy-efficient and earth-friendly?

Disclosure: I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour campaign by Mom Central on behalf of SYLVANIA and received products necessary to facilitate my candid review. In addition, I received a gift certificate to thank me for taking the time to participate.
