When we bought our townhouse 12 years ago, we had no idea how lucky we were. You know the old real estate rule: “Location, Location, Location!” As first-time home buyers with a toddler in tow, we were more concerned with “Price, Price, Price!” than anything else. We thought that we’d be here for five years, tops. Considering the quality and location of the schools that our baby would be attending someday was not on our minds when we signed the papers.
Twelve years later, we’re still here. Our family has grown (unfortunately, our 3-bedroom townhouse has not) and our “baby” is in high school. My three youngest kids are students at the elementary school across the street. Yes, I told you we got lucky. Not only does it take seven minutes for a kindergartener to walk from our front door to the front door of the school, but the school – the teachers, the administrators, the programs – are stellar.
Growing up, I took a bus to school. In my child’s mind, my school was way across town, miles and miles away. I’m sure it wasn’t that far away, but the highway that we lived on was probably a bigger obstacle to walking to school than the distance. I’ve considered our distance from school one of the biggest advantages of living here, both for time, gas, and our health. If nothing else, I know that my kids are getting exercise to and from school every day.
Rain or shine, snow or heat wave, my kids can walk to school.
I was thrilled to learn about the Green Works Walk to School Challenge, and the three younger kids and I have taken the challenge. We signed up on the Green Works Facebook page, and then every day we track the minutes we walked. We can also earn “green footprints” by doing other things like posting green living tips and taking a daily eco-quiz. You can join in the challenge, too!

That’s sad! I know that a lot of schools are like that. Sometimes the location just doesn’t allow it. But way to go for still walking with your kids!
We just moved to Washington State from Denver (where we lived about 5-6 blocks from the school) – here, the elementary school is on a busy road and they don’t allow ANY kids to walk to school! I couldn’t believe it! So – we’ll continue walking – but not to school :( boo hoo!
