Wear Contacts? There’s an App for That

Thursday, November 7, 2013 by Lolli 3 Comments

This post is sponsored by 1-800 Contacts, but all thoughts, opinions and childhood memories are my own.

My grandpa was an optometrist.

Hanging on the wall in the hallway just outside the kitchen in my grandparents’ old house – the one they owned while I was a kid – were two wall hangings. One was a old rustic-looking wooden sign with a pair of glasses painted on it. And right next to it was another wall hanging, this one carefully cross-stitched, with this short poem on it:

sure do miss my mind

For some reason, in my young mind, the poem, the picture of the glasses, and the fact that my grandpa was an optometrist were each inter-connected. I developed a funny image of my grandpa’s work, and subsequently all optometrists. Optometrists helped people to see. Even when people got old and nothing else worked right, glasses and contacts helped really old people to still be able to see.

I’m not sure why that poem or the image of my grandpa’s job have stayed in my mind – so vividly – for so many years.

I got lucky, I suppose. I’m a granddaughter of an optometrist and I still don’t wear glasses. My husband and 3 of my kids, on the other hand, need corrective lenses to help them see and function. So although I’ve never put a contact in my own eye, I’ve had to keep up with my kids’ eyes – appointments, prescriptions, frames and lenses.

Both of my teenage girls prefer contacts over glasses, as does my husband. Let’s just say that having 3 people who wear contacts and need to reorder different prescription strengths and different brands of contacts, at different times…can be tough to manage. I have to remember when to take them in to the eye doctor, when they need to order refills, and it’s up to me to find the best deals…and often that all happens at the last minute.

I recently downloaded the 1-800 Contacts mobile app to help with the contacts-management at our house. I use my phone and my iPad to window shop, to pay bills, to deposit checks into my bank, to check prices and more. Why not add contacts to the list? Who wouldn’t want to take advantage of technology to make as much as possible easier?

I tried it out yesterday by pulling out an old box of CandyMan’s contacts. I just held the box up to my iPad and the scanner picked up not only what brand of contacts but the prescription strength, too. It was so easy and intuitive. And not only are orders on the app easy, but all app orders come with FREE SHIPPING and 5% off, which means the app is saving you both time AND money.

Does anyone in your family wear contacts? How could you benefit from taking care of your contacts management on your mobile device?

That is so neat all that you can do through apps these days, especially this one for contact users. No one in my family wears contacts but we do wear glasses when needed.

I do not wear contacts but my son does. He has been wearing them since he became a teenager. I am going to tell him about this app. I know he will be very interested.
