What’s on your Holiday playlist?

Tuesday, November 25, 2008 by Lolli Leave a Comment

I turned on the radio today on the way to the bank and the library and the grocery store, and I heard one of my favorite radio Christmas songs (God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen by the Barenaked Ladies and Sarah McLachlan). Love that song! So I started thinking…what are YOUR favorite Christmas songs?

Here is my all-time favorite Christmas song:
Estrella de Luz (or, Star Bright, by Loren Wheelwright)

It still makes me teary every time I hear it. It is the ONLY piano song that I can still sit down and play from memory. We sang this song every year on Christmas Eve as a huge extended family. Grandpa would tear up every time we sang it. I can still see the emotion in his face when he sang this song. We would sing all 3 verses in English first and then in Spanish. The link above only has the Spanish words. I would LOVE to find a recording of this song to download, but it seems to be one of those internet-rare songs.

I miss caroling as a family for hours on Christmas Eve. My kids and husband aren’t really into Christmas songs.

Crazy as it sounds, I have to listen to Elvis’ Christmas Album when I decorate the Christmas tree. The soundtrack to the first Home Alone is also good tree-decorating music. I started the Elvis tradition in high school (or maybe it was middle school)–many fun memories! At any rate, I’ve been decorating the tree to Elvis for many years, and I was lucky enough to marry a guy who puts up with it (he even had the CD when we got married!!)

I love to listen to Christmas music from Thanksgiving til Christmas (all day every day), and it always depresses me to have to put the Christmas music away. I’ve started sneaking it in a little this week. One of the kids caught me with the Christmas music on over the weekend and chastised me a little–“Mom! It’s not Christmas time yet!” Aww…..I’m just a sucker for it!

This year, I’m looking forward to my new Bluegrass Christmas CD

PS–Can I just say that after all that work to put this playlist together (it was a lot of work!), the first song will only play a 30 second preview. Err!
