20 Essential Ideas to Help Create a Better Family–Part 1 of 4

Sunday, November 9, 2008 by Lolli Leave a Comment

When I came back from Education Week in August, many of my friends asked me to share some things that I’d learned in all of the classes that I attended. Well, school started the week that I got back, life took over, and I never shared any of the great insights that I gathered. Last night, I pulled out the spiral notebook that I used during Ed. Week to take notes for our Stake Conference. Afterwards, I was flipping through some of my old notes, and I thought I’d use this month of NaBloPoMo to share some of my favorites. I will post a new installment at least every Sunday….and if anybody wants me to continue, I will keep sharing my notes past November. It’s a good exercise in remembering for me…..

One of my favorite classes was by Randall Wright–20 ways to strengthen our families. He was amazing!! He broke the topic down into 4 sections. This first day was not life-changing material, but it set a very good foundation for the rest of the week, and these concepts are always good to remember.

Day 1—5 Ideas to Help You Have More Love in Your Home

1) Show more (appropriate) physical affection at home
When children are no longer held and hugged at home, they will often turn to their peers for that affection…..and that affection may not be appropriate.

2) Express love daily!
Tell each other “I love you!” Don’t expect them to know.

3) Spend quality time with your family
There are so many time-saving devices out there, and yet we’re not spending the time we’ve saved with each other.
Think about this: by the time your kids are 9 years old, half your time with them at home is gone. We only have one time through to spend with our children. Less face time=less influence

4) Use simple actions that show love—gestures, winks, smiles, etc.
When the kids come home, get up and greet them!

5) Show kindness to each other
Matthew 7:12–Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.
Matthew 25:40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
