Progress reports for the first marking period were sent home a little over a week ago. The reports were full of A’s and B’s, O’s and S’s, and lots of +’s. I’m very proud of my kids and the great students that they are.
I think the biggest school-related challenge that I have (now that the kids are older and homework is no longer color-by-number and fill-in-the-blank) is keeping the kids organized and focused after school.
With 5 kids in different grades, studying different subjects on different levels, I need them to maintain a certain amount of independence. Sometimes it’s hard to keep track of who has what project, who needs to study for what test, and whose homework is due on what day.
Obviously, I need to be organized just as much as the kids do. I appreciate any tips I can get to make homework and study time easier for everyone.
A few weeks ago, I introduced Tyson’s Any’tizers “School Year Survival Guide” and just recently I’ve been thinking more about their tips for making after school study time more effective. Here are the tips that they shared:
Give ’em a break
Believe it or not, kids need to unwind, too! After a long day at school, help boost your kids’ energy by giving them 30 minutes to an hour of free time before they start homework. Offer them a protein-rich snack like Tyson Any’Tizers, or let them play video games of hang out with their friends.
Help your kids prepare and organize
Set them up for success by teaching them simple ways to organize. Start by giving them a notebook or agenda so they can write down their homework assignments and plot their schedule each day. Seeing a list of their tasks will help them prioritize and use their study time wisely.
Create a homework routine
Determine a start time and estimated end time to help your kids stay on track. Set aside a distraction-free study space – a desk or table in a quiet room where your kids can spread their books out and study. And plan time to review completed assignments together. THis will help ensure the accuracy of their work, and give you an opportunity to offer praise and boost their confidence.

Setting up a distraction free study place is great for homework productivity. Doing homework in a bedroom can sometimes be counter productive as there are too many distractions from toys to the television or computer. Making a space that is specifically for homework and studying helps kids stay focused and on track.
