Shopping for a 12 year old boy is tough. The only two things he wanted were to join a field hockey team and to have a special birthday dinner at Outback Steakhouse. The dinner was easy enough to handle, but here are NO hockey teams anywhere close to us. 12 year olds no longer play with toys, and they aren’t like girls who enjoy new clothes and accessories. He loves to read, but still has a stack of books he hasn’t read on the shelf next to his bed. Sigh. 12 year old boys are not easy.
I settled on a hockey goal set and extra balls so that he could play with the neighborhood boys (so far, the kids are enjoying family room hockey. Lovely). And of course an extra large Hershey bar (his favorite) and a new movie (Hotel Transylvania). From the boy who kept saying he didn’t want anything for his birthday, I got some pretty massive smiles (and a good mood that lasted until bedtime).
If you were watching Instagram or Facebook yesterday, you might have noticed the failed birthday cake I tried to make while he was at school. Luckily, his big sister volunteered to step in an make him another cake while we took him out to dinner. All I had to do was make the frosting. The cake was beyond incredible and beautiful to boot. But the best part about yesterday’s birthday cake was the fact that his sister made it for him (it made me all warm inside).

Guys/boys are always hard to shop for. The cake looks amazing, and I love the design inside. That’s so sweet that big sis made the birthday cake. Hopefully that made the birthday even more special.
