I just won the Mom-of-the-Year Award. My theater-loving, musical-performing daughter is turning 15 next weekend and I am taking her to see West Side Story at the National Theater on opening night!! Note: our pair of tickets was provided by the theater in exchange for coverage, but all thoughts, opinions, and excitement are our own.
When I found out that West Side Story was coming to the National Theater in DC the week of Necco’s 15th birthday, I knew it was the ultimate birthday present for her. I initially thought that I’d keep it a surprise until we showed up at the theater that night, but the fact is…I hate keeping surprise-secrets like that. I’m the kind of person who wants to know exactly what I’m getting for Christmas (surprises are over-rated) and similarly, I always want to tell my gift-receiver exactly what I’ve gotten them. I can’t contain my excitement.
So I ended up telling Necco the other day that I had gotten her the BEST. PRESENT. EVER. Her face lit up and she said, “You’re going to tell me now, right?!” When I told her that she and I would be seeing West Side Story LIVE in the theater, she started squealing. And then she cried. She was so excited that she couldn’t hold it in. It is her favorite musical ever.
We have been counting down the days until the show…and it’s almost here!
West Side Story opens at the National Theater (at 1321 Pennsylvania Ave NW) on Tuesday, June 3 and runs through Sunday, June 8. There are 8 chances for you to catch it next week – one show each night and 2 shows each weekend day. The show is 2 1/2 hours long with a 20 minute intermission.
About West Side Story:
More than fifty years ago one musical changed theater forever. Now it’s back and mesmerizing audiences once again. From the first note to the final breath, WEST SIDE STORY soars as the greatest love story of all time. This revival, based on Tony Award-winning librettist Arthur Laurents’ Broadway direction, remains as powerful, poignant and timely as ever. The Bernstein and Sondheim score is considered to be one of Broadway’s finest and features such classics of the American musical theatre as “Something’s Coming,” “Tonight,” “America,” “I Feel Pretty” and “Somewhere.” As the Associated Press says, “WEST SIDE STORY remains Broadway’s best dance-driven musical. Five decades have not dimmed the extraordinary choreography or the score that pulsates throughout.” Get tickets HERE.

This is one of my favorite movies because of the songs.
