I don’t think I’ve ever said Happy President’s Day. I typically stick around the house on holidays like this, simply because it’s such a task to lug all six of us anywhere. But I decided to be adventurous today. Maybe it was my independent attitude this week…..Peanut Butter left for his two-week business trip to Egypt this morning and so I am on my own!! It has been 4 1/2 years since PB has travelled for work. Poor Reese was SO distraught this morning at the thought of her “Daddily” leaving. She was an infant the last time he was out of the country, so she has never experienced this.
Back to our adventure….we drove down to DC just before lunch. The outside temperature on the car read 69 degrees. In the middle of February!! It was amazingly beautiful weather. (Luckily, I threw our jackets into the bottom of the stroller before we left the car, but we’ll get to that part of the story in a minute.)
We met up with our friends at the Washington Monument. The wind at the Monument (or The Pencil, as Kiwi insisted on calling it!) was unbelievable! The clouds were moving in fast, making for a very dizzying effect as we looked up at the Monument. Karen provided the kids with some trivia, and I was impressed that Noodle actually knew some of the answers. Go Noodle!
This first pic cracks me up–so realistic!! I’m not sure what the kids were attempting in the 2nd pic.
The walk over to the Lincoln Memorial was both long and worth it. I love the Lincoln Memorial!! Plus, it wore the kids out so much that they fell asleep really well for me tonight. :) Kiwi used my cell phone to call her friend, which just crakced me up. She is such a phone-a-holic! Reese was most impressed with the statue of Abraham Lincoln– “Was he a giant in real life?”
Here come the rains! “Pooh! Rain to a bear? It’s nothing at all! We’ll picnic here and let it fall.” (from one of our favorite Berenstain books–it just came out!)
When we were done, we walked outside only to find that the rain in those fast-moving clouds was finally upon us. Figures that both Karen and I were a 30 minute walk away from our cars. We must have been a sight! One wet woman pushing a soaked stroller with a sleeping 2-year old and a shivering 4 year old, followed by a slow-walking boy with an umbrella, a pre-teen trying to keep her umbrella from turning inside out (which it did every half-block), and one more happily-soaked 8 year old skipping along. I thought we’d never make it back to the car! But we did, and I must say that getting soaked didn’t do any harm, and will just make for a more vivid memory. :)
