Caught on Video!

Wednesday, May 12, 2010 by Lolli 9 Comments

How often has your kid been doing something silly, exciting, or extremely cute and you’ve thought, “I’ve got to get my video camera!!”?

And how often have you run to grab the video camera only to find out that the cute behavior is finished?

In the early years of our family’s life, we had an enormous, complicated video camera. It worked great, but we rarely pulled it out. And we rarely caught those cute little moments when my older kids were little. And then there’s the issue of transferring those video clips onto the computer…

That changed quite a bit when I got my first point and shoot digital camera, when Reese was a newborn. That camera took short video, and finally I was able to catch those fun little moments.

Since then, I’ve had a few different video cameras, each a little better than the last (and certainly more convenient). I am glad to have something to capture the silly and the meaningful moments, because kids change SO fast. I wish that I’d caught more of those moments, though. Like everyone’s first steps, or first words. Or first somersaults in Grandma’s spa.

This week, the Juice Box Jungle widget in my sidebar is featuring Canon PowerShot SX210 IS, which combines the ability to take great photos, & also shoot high definition video.  No more wishing you brought the camcorder, now you can just whip out your camera and start shooting away (as a bonus it comes in two awesome colors – Pink & Gold!).

What are some of your favorite moments caught on video….and what do you wish you’d been able to capture but didn’t?

Disclosure: As much as I would have liked it, I did not receive a Canon PowerShot SX210 IS. However,  Canon and JuiceBoxJungle did sponsor me to write this post, and talk about my experience shooting video of my family.

    Erica,
you are going to make me cry! Oh my goodness. What powerful words. Makes me want to video tape my whole family today, just to capture them how they are right now.

I went to school for video production, graduated and worked for 6 years in the television industry.

You would think someone like me would be all over video.

    No video at the wedding.

No video at my child’s birth.

    I am regretful.

I recently came across some video of me walking down the aisle at our wedding. Someone shot it with her camera, and sent it to me just a few weeks ago.

    I cried.

No, i didn’t want an over-produced wedding video that cost me 2 grand… I just wanted someone to capture the moments I would forget. Like the way I smiled at my husband to be when I came down the aisle.

I now have a Flip, and love the portability and way I can capture just the moments. Every 3 months, I combine everything into a big video complete with music, graphics… produced home movies.

But I’ll never get those small moments back. Boy, I do regret it.

I love my powershot camera. It’s so convenient. I’m not sure about the model in your post mostly because of the pop up flash but I have to admit they take some great pics for a point and shoot.

I’ve personally never been caught on video camera (unless you count security cameras?) but I’m horribly camera shy.

Oh I love watching videos like these. The children are just in their natural environment, and freely expressed themselves in the cutest way.

    Thanks Lolli for the visit!

Do you know what I actually forgot to video last month? Singing happy birthday to my son when he turned 5!! I have every other birthday singing on VHS tape (yeah, we have an old school mini tape camcorder!) except for this one. That was a mommy fail on my part!

video is great – but i never remember to take it with me, pull it out or get the footage off the camera. :( i thought having video on my camera i carry with me constantly would change that – it hasn’t.

    Adorable video of your kids.
