Goal Setting and Hope

Saturday, April 3, 2010 by Lolli 9 Comments

It is a new month and therefore I have a new Fishful Thinking focus for my family. This month’s special ingredient is Goal Setting and Hope.

Goal Setting/Hope - Fishful Thinking Ingredient

What is HOPE?

Hope is when we wish for something and believe that wish will be fulfilled. Hope leads to the drive to set and pursue goals, to take risks, and to initiate action.

Hope isn’t just passively wishing and waiting for something to happen. Hope leads to the drive to set and pursue goals, take risks and initiate action. Hope fuels problem-solving and helps children develop personal strengths and social resources. Research shows that high-hope people are excited about the future and set goals for themselves. Fishful Thinking gives parents tools to teach their children how to set positive goals, develop a system of appropriate rewards, and promote strategies of thinking that will enable children to go after whatever they want out of life.

Why does Goal Setting/Hope Matter?

* The ability to set and reach goals is critical for success in school, sports, work, and health.
* Children who have grit, tenacity in reaching their goals, get higher grades in school than those without.
* Children who are effective at goal setting learn how to organize time, prioritize, and have an increased sense of mastery and competence.

Information taken from FishfulThinking.com- Goal Setting.

Goal setting is not one of my strongest points, honestly. I think I have my work cut out for me this month. I certainly have plenty to learn as I focus on setting goals and sticking with them, that’s for sure.

Will you join me?

It’s nearly impossible to find well-informed people for this topic, but you sound like you know what you’re talking about!
    Thanks

    Good Post.

May I also suggest a goal setting system called GoalsOnTrack. It’s a web-based goal tracking and time management tool, with a very nice web 2.0 interface, and has many nice features to help you keep track of goals, and most importantly it lets you better organize daily todos towards achieving goals. Highly recommend it for serious goal achievers.

I think that if we don’t set goals, we never know when to be proud, pleased or even content with our progress- or for that matter, if we need to adjust things and try a bit harder ;-)

Like you, I’ve always ha a hard time setting goals. One of the things that I realized, though, is that a part of setting goals is to make sure your goals are realistic. The time frame as well as the goal itself needs to be something reachable. It’s always wonderful to reach for the stars, but when you’re setting goals, it’s important to stay realistic.

Every day I realize how important goals are – I have gotten better at setting them, but keeping them front and center on a daily basis does require more effort. Teaching kids about goal setting is an entirely different story – it is so hard to be consistent and they have so many things pulling at their time and energy – that keeping them focused has become another goal of mine! ;-)
